First Pick Handmade At The Heritage Hall September 16 & 17, 2017

First Pick Postcard jpegThis weekend you are invited to First Pick Handmade YVR happening at the Heritage Hall at 3102 Main Street on September 16th and 17th. This is a curated event of 27 Canadian men’s and women fashion accessory designers. They will be on hand with a limited run of their fall picks.  First Pick Handmade will transform Heritage Hall into a 3,300-square foot pop up boutique department store for the person that values Canadian design and quality materials.   The event will include a combination of long standing designers as well as newer start ups.  The common thread all these designers share is high quality construction and materials. The event will showcase clothing, jewelry, hats, winter accessories, shoes and bags, for both men and women.  Some of the local designers featured include Westerly Handmade Shoes, Friday Socks, Bill Would, Winterluxe, Anderson Boots, Daub and Design, Lana Betty and Buruko Bags and Zed Handmade just to name a few.

First Pick Handmade was created and curated by Janna Hurtzig  who is the founder/designer behind Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere and Astrosatchel labels.  Hurtzig has been part of Vancouver’s handmade scene since 1988 in a variety of roles including co-organizer of Shiny, Muddy Fuzzy.  So we are expecting to see some great things at this upcoming first ever market.  First Pick Handmade YVR runs this Saturday from  11:00 am to 7:00 pm and Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Entrance is $3.00 at the door.

Call For Artists By Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Show For December 2017

CallingALLMakersAre you a local maker, artist or crafter?  Shiny Fuzzy Muddy is looking for you.  They are getting prepared to host their 15th Annual Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Show on December  9 and 10, 2017 at the Heritage Hall. If you are unfamiliar with this show, it is one of ‘the’ shows to check out over the holiday season featuring high quality design and craftsmanship. They curate an amazing line up of talent. Applications are now being accepted for December’s event. If you are new artist, you also have the opportunity to submit an application under their Emerging Artist Program.  Every year, they sponsor one artist/maker with under 3 years of professional experience. They provide them with a booth free of cost, so they can spend that money on supplies and display materials to help them grow their handmade business. They also provide mentorship, promotion and a chance for the artist to get a feel for the market at low risk to them. They are big believers in supporting up and coming talent and are now proud to offer this program for a 3rd year. The 10th Annual Nifty For Fifty Sale At The Heritage Hall April 9th

Nifty502017One of the best sales in the City is back on Sunday, April 9th at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street.  Nifty for Fifty was founded by Adhesif Clothing designer, Melissa Ferreira, in 2007 with 12 designers. It has now grown to 30 sellers with over 3,000 shoppers attending the one day sale. This year is their 10th anniversary and we expect it will be one of the best sales yet. If you are not familiar with Nifty For Fifty, the sale is a way for designers to show gratitude to their customers by clearing out local merchandise all of which is $50 or less. You can expect to find clothing, jewelry, bags, scarves and much more by 30 local designers. Some local returning designers that will be on hand include Adhesif Clothing, Allison Wonderland, and Daub & Design. There are a host of new participants this year including Black Bird Studios with nature inspired ceramics, Lana Betty with gold and silver 3D printed jewellery, Scandinazn with handmade repurposed leather goods, Wallis-Evera with modern hemp business wear and Winterluxe with recycled cashmere.    A number of items available on this day will be up to 80% off. So mark your calendar for this shopping event, but just a reminder this is a mainly cash event. For those that want the best selection or first dibs at some of the great deals, we recommend you get their early. The sale starts at 11:00 a.m. and goes to 8:00 p.m. Admission is $2 at the door.

Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Returns To The Heritage Hall December 10 & 11

shiny-fuzzy-muddy-team-photo-1Shiny Fuzzy Muddy is back at the beautiful historic Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, December 10th and 11th.  This collaborative event is brought to you by 4 core members and local makers, Janna Hurtzig, Kari Woo, Arleigh Wood and Frances Dickinson pictured to the left. They formed a non-profit collective to create events that bring art to people.  Shiny Fuzzy Muddy brings together more than 30 local artists to meet and share their craftsmanship in an environment that opposes the large mass produced products.   They hand pick the artists that join them each year so you can expect some returning favourites as well as some new guest artists that will be exhibiting their work. This year you will again find jewellery, ceramics, fine art, clothing, textiles from local artists including Toodlebunny, Arleigh Wood, Julie MacKinnon Ceramics, Westerly Shoes, LUprints, Daub & Design, Adhesif Clothing Company and kari woo contemporary art jewellery, Winterluxe and LUprints.  Some of the new designers participating this year include Haejin Lee Ceramics, Vanessa Lam with A Drop of Wonder Studio who does photography with mixed media painting and Claudia Schulz who designs hats as pictured below.  Shiny Fuzzy Muddy runs Saturday, December 10th from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and Sunday, December 11th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission is $3.00 and these funds will go to an Emerging Artists Scholarship. Each year, Shiny Fuzzy Muddy identifies an Emerging Artist and supports their new business endeavors with a grant to participate in the event.  In 2016, the Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Emerging Artist Grant was awarded to a personal favourite East Van artist, Stephanie Symns, of ANTIPOD Workshop.  Symns is a textile designer who uses the digital realm as well as much more hands-on process-based work like weaving, dyeing or hand-printing. We know Stephanie is now set up in a new studio space off Clark Drive and participated in her first Eastside Culture Crawl the other week. So these grants go a long way to promoting art in our community. Main Street Vinyl Record Fair XIV At The Heritage Hall November 12 & 13

mainstreetrecordfairLove vinyl? Then you will want to check out the Main Street Vinyl Record Fair happening this weekend. It will be taking place November 12th and 13th at the Heritage Hall from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. Whether you are looking to buy, sell or trade new and/or used vinyl records, this is certainly the place to be. They will have LPs, 45s, 78s, turntables, vintage audio gear, record storage, over 100 independent vendors which translates to over 100,000 vinyl records available for purchase. They will also have a listening station set up by Thorens Phonograph Company  and of course a DJ spinning the tunes. If you are looking to discover rare records and/or stock up on bargain classics, you just might want to stop by. Admission for this event is $4.00 for adults, kids under 16 years of age are free.

Blim Market Is Back At The Heritage Hall Sunday, March 20

BlimMarket2016Blim Market takes places this Sunday, March 20th at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street. There will be over 50 vendors on hand with an array of items including handmade accessories, jewellery, vintage items, pottery, cards and handmade soaps. Some of the vendors lined up for this Sunday’s market include first timer, Purple Cove, with one-of-a-kind handmade Polymer clay jewellery. Also on hand this year, will be Me & Monty Natural Dog Spa Products with natural dog soap, shampoo and nose-and-paw butter for your 4 legged friends, as well as Raincity Soaps with their handmade soaps using local ingredients.   If you are looking for jewellery, Kiln Ceramic Jewellery will be on hand with some original designs and Ghost Mountain Supply Co. will have one-of-a-kind handmade bowls and mugs. Entry for the Blim Market is by donation and the event runs from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Hot food will be on hand by Open Sesame.

Vancouver Design Jam For Community Art in Mount Pleasant January 28th

Nerd-Jam-Web-HeaderThe Mount Pleasant Business Association is hosting a Design Nerd Jam on Thursday, January 28th. The Mount Pleasant BIA is inviting its members as well as local artists, art businesses and organizations, community groups and developers to share their ideas on what might be fun and engaging public art in Mount Pleasant.  Mount Pleasant is a creative hub filled with artists and artist studios, but there is a feeling that there is little evidence of that on the streets of Mount Pleasant.  Thus, the upcoming Design Nerd Jam which will be held at the Heritage Hall.  What is a Nerd Jam you might ask?  Basically, it’s an idea factory. The premise is to have a fun, fast, creative brainstorming session with various stakeholders in the community.  You are invited to join the conversation on January 28th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  An RSVP is requested which can be done online.
