Tango Lessons – Italian Cultural Centre – September 1, 2017

The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting weekly tango lessons every Friday night for the next 2 months starting September 1st. Classes run from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Cost is $20 per person per class, or you can register by the month at a cost of $60. We think this is a fun date night whether a first date or married many years.

Billy Dixon & The Soul Train Express – Federico’s Supper Club – September 1, 2017

Dinner, dancing, live music and a fun night out.  Federico’s Supper Club on Commercial Drive is hosting the Billy Dixon & The Soul Train Express Friday, September 1st.  It is a 7 piece band featuring Motown, soul and rock and roll. Artful Sundays – Napier Greenway – September 3, 2017

This is the last Artful Sunday this summer in the Napier Greenway at the Britannia Community Centre.  You can expect to find local artisans, workshops, demonstrations and live music.  Event happens Noon to 5:00 pm. It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

An Inconvenient Sequel Truth To Power – Rio Theatre – September 4, 2017

Vice-President Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Sequel Truth To Power which is a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth happens at The Rio Theatre Monday, September 4th at 4:20 pm. The film brings you up to speed on the issues around climate change.

Opening Reception Photo Exhibit – The Cultch Gallery – September 6, 2017

You are invited to the opening reception happening in The Cultch Gallery Wednesday, September 6th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. They will be showcasing photographs by Wendy D. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. If you miss the opening, exhibit does run until September 30th.

Accordion Noir Festival – Russian Hall – September 7, 2017

The 10th Annual Accordion Noir Festival kicks off at the Russian Hall on Thursday, September 7th.  The festival kicks off with a special first time Accordion Only Bingo Night with includes prizes and musical acts. Entertainment, Comedy + Live Theatre

Looking for theatre? Café Deux Soleils has an interesting show happening September 3rd to the 6th called The Gigantic, Enormous, Very Large, Unfathomably Sized Painting which explores the nature of break ups. Rio Theatre is kicking off the weekend with an 80s classic movie The Breakfast Club for their late Friday night movie at 11:30 pm. Of course, it’s also the last weekend to catch PNE Playland. Tango Lessons At The Italian Cultural Centre Friday Nights September-October

TangoDanceIf you are looking for a fun date night, we invite you to check out Tango lessons being offered every Friday night at the Italian Cultural Centre starting this Friday, September 1st. If you are not familiar with tango, it is a partnered dance that originated in the 1880s in Argentina and became so popular it spread to the rest of the world. No surprise why, this is one sexy dance. Starting September 1st, Italian tango instructor Adrian Reda, will introduce you to the world of tango and teach you and your partner the fundamental movements. The class is open to beginners and those with a few steps under their belt. The classes run every Friday for the next 2 months for 1 1/2 hours at a cost of $20 per class or $60 for the month. Outdoor Pizza & Beer ‘Good Grains’ Happens August 24, 2017

GoodGrainsThe Italian Cultural Centre invites you to an evening of beer and pizza in their outdoor space adjacent to Beaconsfield Park. Outside of having some great beer and authentic Italian pizza, you will learn about BC grains, the bakers and brewers and at the same time meeting some of the bakers, brewers and growers.  The event is about is as local as you can get. Pizza will be made from Fraser Valley grown wheat, beer is from Luppolo Brewing Company and Vancouver’s only organic brewery, Dogwood Brewing. Playland Nights – July 14, 2017

Playland hosts an adult only evening from 7:00 pm to midnight Friday. You will find beer, wine, special cocktails including Candy Floss Martinis and Snow Cone Vodka and the usual midway games and 25 rides. Advance admission is $26, tickets at the gate are $29.

Tango Lesson – July 14, 2017

Love to dance? Want to learn to dance the tango?  The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting dance lessons Friday nights in July. Classes are from 6:00 – 7:30 pm and cost is $20. To register visit, Italian Cultural Centre.

Eastside Flea – July 14 – 16, 2017

The Eastside Flea happens this weekend at 1024 Main Street. Friday night is their Shop N’Bop which features food trucks, pinball, a select group of artisans, craft beer and cocktails from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. The full market happens Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm each day and features over 50 local vendors.

Free Outdoor Concert – Trout Lake – July 19, 2017

Trout Lake Community Centre is again playing host to a line up of free concerts every Wednesday night from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. This week the Soda Crackers take the stage. In the event of rain, the event goes indoors.

Outdoor Long Table Dinner – July 20, 2017

The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting an outdoor long table dinner on Thursday, July 20th a Taste of East Van. The evening is a collaboration with Slow Food Vancouver and showcases local growers and producers. Tickets are $45 for dinner. Wines will be available for purchase. Entertainment, Comedy, Live Music + Theatre

Playland is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm this weekend. If you are looking for some family entertainment, the Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting free dance and Zumba in Grandview Park from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday. This is a free event, everyone is welcome to attend. Friday night, Trout Lake will be featuring an outdoor movie at 9:00 pm showing Shrek. If you are looking for some thinking theatre, The Cultch is featuring Deviance until July 15th.  The show highlights the fine line between abnormal and unacceptable behaviour. Have a great weekend!

La Merda Comes To The Cultch May 2-13, 2017

LaMerdaA provocative internationally acclaimed show is coming to The Cultch this May.  La Merda comes to Vancouver as part of an international tour making its Canadian premiere. It is a collaborative production brought to you by Frida Kahlo Productions, Richard Jordan Productions, Produzioni Fuorivia and presented with the Italian Cultural Centre.  The show is on a trailblazing sell-out run from shows in Rome, London, Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Sao Paulo, Madrid and Adelaide. La Merda is a rapid fire proclamation mapping the dark and sometimes disturbing train of thought of a young woman obsessed with finding fame at any cost. She sings and howls a stream of consciousness that reveals – with rage and poetry – revolting human secrets, and a modern society that is powerful, desperate, vulnerable, and cutting. In a three part monologue, all performed completely naked,  Italian actress Silvia Gallerano, rants about and probes the depth of modern society, politics, mental health, female sexuality, and the patriarchy. The subject matter is powerful, angry and brilliant, this is one show we won’t be missing. Tickets start at $20 and are available at The Cultch.

Tremors – Festival Featuring Emerging Talent August 11-20, 2016

Tremors2016In 2007, Rumble Theatre created the Tremors Festival which was originally a two week run of plays created by emerging companies. In 2014, they devised a new model for this festival which focused on providing mentorship to individual emerging artists rather than emerging companies. Tremors is now a vehicle for emerging artists to build networks, receive professional mentorship, develop their craft and work on exciting plays. Each show is directed, designed, stage managed, and performed by a company of emerging artists working with the guidance of professional mentors. Rumble Theatre is thrilled to present their 2016 edition of Tremors. They’ve selected three outstanding scripts specifically Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, Better Angels: A Parable by Andrea Scott, and Bull by Mike Bartlett along with an assembly of emerging artists to direct, design and perform each show. For two weeks, these three plays will be performed simultaneously in different rooms of the Italian Cultural Centre.  They are saying it’s “like a Cineplex of theatre…with a bar!” and we quite like the sound of that.

Dry Land begins its evening performance at 7:00 pm/9:15 pm, Better Angels at 7:15 pm/9:00 pm and Bull at 7:30 pm/9:30 pm.   Matinees for each show are Dry Land 1:00 pm, Better Angels at 1:15 pm and Bull at 1:30 pm. Pizza & Beer August 17th At The Italian Cultural Centre

GoodGrainsIn case you hadn’t heard the news, The Italian Cultural Centre now has it’s very own outdoor brick pizza oven which had its inaugural run on June 17th.  The pizza oven is located at the Italian Cultural Centre’s outdoor space which is adjacent to Beaconsfield Park. Within easy view is  their still fairly new community garden and a playground for the wee ones.  So we were pleased to hear about this collaborative event coming on August 17th called Good Grains which incorporates many things we love. The event is being billed as a celebration of pizza and beer and is a collaboration between FarmFolk, City Folk, the Bauta Initiative, the Italian Cultural Centre and East Van’s newest brewery, Luppolo. The evening event will give you an opportunity to meet local grain growers, hand-mill flour, take a peak at a demo size brewer and best of all eat and drink local.  This is a family friendly event that gets under way at 6:00 pm. Early bird tickets are available for $20 (until July 21st) after which they will be $25 person, save for children which are $5. Taste of East Van – An Outdoor Long Table Dinner July 21st

This evening is a collaboration with Slow Food Vancouver and will showcase local, organic and sustainable produce and cuisine. You will also have an opportunity to learn more about local growers and producers. The evening runs from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Spring & Summer Farmer Markets In East Van

BerriesThe warm Spring weather is now here which also means more great local produce. We are fortunate to have yet another season of farmers markets lined up which offers us not only produce, but handmade goods, artisans breads, locally made jams, cheese, free range and organic eggs and of course wineries, breweries and makers of spirits are now on hand offering tastings as well.  Each market is unique and offers a little something different. Trout Lake is the largest and a great place to sit down and have a picnic on the spot at the park with your new purchases. River District is one of the smaller markets situated just below Marine Drive at the foot of Kerr Street in SE Vancouver, but generally different vendors than the markets organized by Vancouver Farmers Market.  Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is also smaller than Trout Lake, but we love that it’s on a Sunday so giving some options when faced with a busy weekend.  The Italian Market is held on Friday afternoons in front of the Italian Cultural Centre and is a personal favourite. Along with produce, you will find artisans, food trucks, coffee and more. The added bonus is the Italian Cultural Centre usually has a number of other events going on including art on display, live music and/or dancing.  The Main Street Farmers Market is a great afternoon market and perfect for those just leaving downtown for home, or a quick cycle from Mount Pleasant and the Olympic Village.  We have set out below the dates when the markets begin and end for the Spring/Summer season.

Mount Pleasant Farmers Market:
10:00 am – 2:00 pm

 Location: Guelph Street between 7th & 8th Avenues (on the paved play area between Mt. Pleasant Elementary and Guelph Park)

River District Farmers Market:
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Every Saturday May 14th  – October 15th

Italian Grappa Tasting Italian Cultural Centre February 11th

GrappaYou are invited to an Italian Grappa Tasting at the Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan Street, on February 11th.   Grappa is a uniquely Italian alcoholic beverage that is made from discarded grape seeds, stalks and steams that are the by-product of the winemaking process. It has been called Italy’s ‘elixir’ and has been around for many generations. It was popular in Italy and mainly produced there, but is now being made by distilleries in various parts of the world including just south of Vancouver in Oregon.  On the evening of February 11th, Carmen d’Onofrio of Stile Brands will take you through a tasting of 7 Italian grappas. Having had the pleasure of taste tasting grappas in Italy, we expect this to be a very delicious experience.  Tickets for this event are $45 and can be purchased by contacting the Italian Cultural Centre at 604.430.3337 or online.  The event runs from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Trattoria Hall.
