This weekend you are invited to check out Shiny Fuzzy Muddy happening at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street (at 15th Avenue). This is curated annual collection of fine art, craft and design. This is also Shiny Fuzzy Muddy’s 17th and final year of this market. The curated collective is brought to you by artists, Kari Woo, Janna Hurtzig, Arleigh Wood and Frances Dickinson and features some of Western Canada’s brightest talent. This collaborative event provides a venue that champions craftsmanship over mass production, annually hosting over 30 Canadian and BC based artists to exhibit in an intimate environment where shoppers can mingle with the makers. Throughout the years of this long running show, over 75 Canadian visual artists, makers, designers, jewelers and potters and their products have been featured at events providing a unique platform for consumers to meet the people who create art in the city.
“It’s bittersweet that 2019 will be the final Shiny Fuzzy Muddy show,” says Frances Dickinson, co-founder, of the SFM Collective, “we have seen the growth of slow fashion and handmade design in Vancouver over the past 17 years and we are so proud to have championed this movement. But now, as artists and designers who crave change and creativity, it’s time for all of us to focus on new projects.”

Have you made your way down to the walking trails along the Fraser River in SE Vancouver? If you have, you will come across an area called Tugboat Landing at the foot of Victoria Drive at East Kent Avenue South. If you aren’t familiar with this area, it once housed tugboats at this landing on the Fraser River hence the name. It was redeveloped into a community of condos and townhomes that enjoy river front living. The area is located on a public walkway and cycle path just steps away from Gladstone Park and less than a mile West of the new River District development.
The 5th First Pick Handmade takes over the Heritage Hall on Saturday, September 14th. The 3300 square foot space will be transformed into a Handmade Pop Up Department Store. You can expect to find a wide range of high quality, fashion forward Canadian made clothing, footwear, jewellery, lingerie, active wear, scarves and hats. If that list isn’t long enough, there will also be other winter accessories including belts, bags and wallets as well as skincare products and small batch fragrances. The items are handcrafted with an eye to sustainability. If there’s something specific you are looking for men’s or women’s wear, there’s a whole lot of talent coming to this event. We’ve set out all the designers that will be on hand.

The first event kicks off Sunday, August 11th from Noon to 5:00 pm and for the next 3 Sundays following. We do know that a couple of personal favourites artisans will be at the August 11th event, BagItUpBy Kate to help you reduce plastic use while shopping and

The Ellis Building, 1024 Main Street, has seen the incarnation of many different events. It’s a great casual space for hosting events and we quite like the sound of The Main Street Mixed Bag and what organizers have in store. As the name depicts the event is a mixed bag, but with a bit of a twist. Originally billed as a yard sale, local makers keen on low table fees jumped on board. There is one other very unique aspect we love. Young makers, aged 16 and under get a discounted table and an opportunity to be part of market. We have to say we love this! On that note, we hear
