This Sunday you are invited to participate in the 4th Annual Art, Bike & Beer Crawl. This is a fundraiser for the Eastside Culture Crawl in which you explore East Van’s craft breweries while at the same time supporting local art. Vancouver Greek Summerfest – All Weekend Long
The Vancouver Greek Summerfest is now daily until July 14th at 4541 Boundary Road and 29th Avenue. Lots of great food and live music. If you head down on a weekend, it does get busy when it comes to seating. Taking transit? The location is a 10 minute walk from the Joyce Skytrain Station. Playland Nights – Playland – July 5th
Playland Nights returns tonight and will continue every Friday in July. This is an adult only evening (19+) which features the usual fun, food and rides, but with fully licensed grounds. If You Could Read My Mind: Gordon Lightfoot – Rio Theatre – July 5th & July 7th
The Rio Theatre hosts the documentary If You Could Read My Mind Friday night. It features the life and music of the Canadian music icon, Gordon Lightfoot and some of his famous friends and fans including Geddy Lee (Rush), Randy Bachman, Anne Murray and many others. This is billed is an intimate and emotional examination of the artist’s profound relationship to his music and his Canadian roots. Documentary runs Friday night at 6:15 pm. Car Free Day – Commercial Drive – July 7th
Car Free Day where it all began happens this Sunday on Commercial Drive between Noon and 7:00 pm. Car Free Day stretches 15 blocks along Commercial Drive between Venables and The Grandview Cut. and features activities for all ages, food and entertainment all day long. This is a free family friendly event which is accessible by bus, Skytrain and cycling all of which is encouraged.
Mini Car Free Day – Commercial Street/Cedar Cottage – July 7th
The great street in Cedar Cottage that boasts the Commercial Street Café, Second Nature Home, Toso Wood Gallery, Vancouver Tool Library and Chance Café and soon to be Flourist, are hosting their own Mini Car Free Day this Sunday on the 3400-3500 block of Commercial Street. Expect to find live music, chainsaw carving, giant Jenga game, street art, bike repair, chocolate tasting, artisans and kids activities. Although Flourist is not open just yet, we hear they will have a table with delectable things on hand. We suggest you get there early. Event happens 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The Vancouver Market – Wise Hall – July 7th
The Vancouver Market featuring 20+ local vendors happens at The Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street this Sunday, July 7th. Whether you are looking for new or vintage, likely to find an array of unique items. Event happens 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is $2.00.
21st Century Flea Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – July 7th
21st Century Flea Market is back at the Croatian Cultural Centre this Sunday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Some 175 vendors will be on hand with collectibles, antiques, kitsch, vintage and whole lot more. Who knows you could find. Admission is $5.00 OR for early birds wanting to get a jump on things $20 from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.

The Napier Greenway: The City of Vancouver is Renaming Without Consultation
3 Jul So, every once in a while, we happen across things that make us shake our heads. What we are about to share is one of those things. For the last few years we have featured the East Van Garden Tour, which is a fundraiser for Britannia Neighbours who do an amazing job of beautifying and maintaining what we all know as the Napier Greenway. For those who don’t know it, this space is located off Commercial Drive at the entrance to Britannia Community Centre. This is a great community space created in 2001 by the City and Britannia Neighbours (a group of community volunteers), under the City’s Green Streets Program and which has been lovingly tended to by Britannia Neighbours for the last 18 years. We have to say we were rather surprised when we stumbled across a letter from Britannia Neighbours to the City of Vancouver about the renaming of this space to Margaret Mitchell Plaza.
For those who may not know the name, Margaret Mitchell was a Vancouver resident, social worker, and activist who was elected to the House of Commons four times to serve the riding of Vancouver East. She was the longest serving female MP when she left in 1993 after 14 years in which she boldly advanced women’s rights. This is without a doubt someone who is worthy of recognition.
Now, getting back to the Napier Greenway, Britannia Neighbours is a group of local volunteers who started working with the City of Vancouver in 2000 to create the Napier Greenway and has, since its completion in 2001, maintained it. They have weekly work parties, they rake and weed and prune and plant new plants and move old ones, they clean up graffiti on benches, and do other repairs as needed. They also hire someone from the nearby Kettle Friendship Society to pick up litter daily and hire someone else to water all summer. This greenway is a gathering space that regularly hosts free community events such as Artful Sundays, the Stone Soup Festival, and activities during Car Free Day and Italian Day. The Napier Greenway was created and is regularly invigorated by the community that surrounds and cares for it. With no disrespect to Margaret Mitchell, the renaming of it dismisses and disrespects the hard work this community and its volunteers have put and continue to put into this space.
We have learned that there is actually a Naming Committee at the City of Vancouver which makes recommendations about places that need new names; the previous Council, however, made this decision without consulting either Britannia Neighbours or its own Naming Committee. During an in-camera meeting, the previous Council agreed, by a majority vote, without any consultation whatsoever, to rename the Napier Greenway Margaret Mitchell Plaza. The initiative for the new name we understand was led by then Vision Councillor, Andrea Reimer. The ‘without consultation’ is the part that really gets under our skin whether this issue or others that affect the communities they represent. Elected officials serve residents of the City, that includes ALL of us, those that may not have such a public face, but serve their communities tirelessly and don’t get the public recognition they deserve.
The Napier Greenway is a space residents and volunteers are proud of and we feel they have the right to maintain the name.
Margaret Mitchell was a tireless advocate for some of the poorest areas in Vancouver, so we think it is fitting that Vancouver’s second temporary modular housing facility at 2132 Ash Street was named Margaret Mitchell Place. This space creates housing for 52 members, teaches life skills, has health teams and support, and employment programs, as well as a community garden. We think this new housing facility is a fitting tribute to Margaret Mitchell and is reflective of the work she undertook. The Napier Greenway was created and has been maintained for 18 years by Britannia Neighbours, who may be nameless and faceless, but who are worthy of recognition. All they wish to do is retain the name they created for this community gathering space, Napier Greenway. We hope the current City Council rights this wrong.

Vancouver Greek Summerfest July 4th to July 14th, 2019

The Vancouver Greek Summerfest is back for its 33rd consecutive year at the edge of East Van, 4541 Boundary Road. Vancouver Greek Summerfest kicks off Thursday, July 4th and runs till July 14th. This is a free fun community event with great Greek food including BBQ Lamb, Loukoumade, souvalaki, gyros and more available for purchase. The event features dozen of live singers and dancers on the Performance Stage including belly dancing, folk dancing and Serbian dancing. Organizers also have a great music line up including performances by bands Zougla, Urban Myth, Asi Somos, Dolphin Jazz and legendary Blues musician Jim Byrnes. If you love George Michael, you may wish to mark July 6th on your calendar, Gotta B George Michael will be performing that day kicking off the fun at 7:30 pm. When there are not live performances, a DJ will be spinning tunes. The event takes place in the parking lot behind the Greek Orthodox Community Church of East Vancouver at 4541 Boundary Road which is located on the border of Vancouver and Burnaby. If you are coming from Vancouver, the intersection is 29th Avenue. If you are coming from Burnaby, it is Moscrop. The event is free to attend. Note, as there is food and lots of moving bodies, pets are not permitted. During the week, Monday to Wednesday, activities take place from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm and from Thursday to Sunday, things go from Noon to 11:00 pm. Tiki Nights At Odd Society Spirits July 4th & August 1st

Summer is officially here and should you feel like you need a bit of a tropical vibe in your life, you may wish to mark a couple dates on your calendar. Local distiller, Odd Society Spirits, 1725 Powell Street, is hosting Tiki Nights this summer on Thursday, July 4th and Thursday, August 1st. You are invited to join them for a BBQ, music and refreshing Tiki drinks made by Barman Chad Rivard. We hear some special Tiki recipes will be available using their spirits. No ticket purchase required, just put on your best tropical dress or Hawaiian shirt and come down between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm to take a little break from the everyday that’s not very far away.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day at Trout Lake. Corgi Races – Hastings Racecourse – June 22nd & 23rd
Vancouver’s Hastings Racecourse plays host once again to a corgi dog race this Saturday and Sunday. To view the races is free of charge. The winning pooch gets $500 in prize money and a Bosley’s prize pack. The event kicks off at 1:15 pm Saturday and Sunday. There will also be food trucks, live music and food trucks on hand.
East Side Pride – Grandview Park – June 22nd
East Side Pride is a family oriented pride event happening in Grandview Park this Saturday from Noon to 6:00 pm. Cider Tasting At The Cultch June 27th

If you love cider and the arts, well you can taste some delicious cider while supporting the arts on June 27th. The Cultch will be hosting a Cider Tasting featuring Windfall Cider, Lonetree Cider, Sea Cider among others. You are invited to come learn about cider making and the apple varieties used in the making cider while enjoy some appetizers. The event takes place in The Cultch Lobby. Trout Lake Outdoor Summer Concert Series Returns July 3rd

The Trout Lake Outdoor Summer Concert Series is back for another year starting Wednesday, July 3, 2019. If you have not checked out this great free summer event, you are missing out on the perfect summer evening. This annual event is hosted by the Trout Lake Community Center at 3360 Victoria Drive. Concerts happen every Wednesday evening throughout the summer rain or shine. If it rains, concerts go indoors to the Grandview Room. We’ve had the opportunity to take in some of the concerts on a nice summer evening and we have to say, it is a pretty perfect way to spend an evening. Bring a blanket, your friends, family, kids or the dog or all of the above and a picnic and you are set. If you aren’t able to organize a picnic, you can grab some food at the Carousel Café. We have set out the musical line up for this summer below. Each evening kicks off at 6:30 pm. By the way, dancing is encouraged.
For those that love the lantern processions around Trout Lake, take note. On th
e very last concert of the summer, August 28th, there will be an opportunity to make lanterns from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm after which there will be a lantern procession along with performers and musicians around Trout Lake at dusk (8:30 pm). Keep an eye out for the Lantern Tent to make yours that evening, or bring your own creation from home.

St. Patrick’s Spring Fair/Night Market-2881 Main Street – June 14th
St. Patrick’s Elementary School is hosting a big fundraiser and by the looks of things a whole lot of fun. They’ve got a bouncy castle, face painters, balloon artists, air brush tattoos and along with activities for the kids, they have a night market for the adults. Event happens 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Italian Market–Italian Cultural Centre – June 14th
The Italian Cultural Centre hosts their outdoor summer market this Friday from 4:30 – 9:30 pm. The market is free to attend, the bee hive tours are $15 and require registration.
Eastside Flea–550 Malkin Avenue – June 14th – June 16th
The Eastside Flea kicks off Friday night at 5:00 pm and continues Saturday and Sunday at 550 Malkin Avenue from 11 am to 5 pm. Lots of great vintage finds along side local makers, food trucks and cocktails will be available for purchase. Admission is $2.00.

10th Annual Vancouver Craft Beer Week Festival June 8 & 9, 2019

Love craft beer? If the answer is yes, you might want to make your way to the 10th Annual Vancouver Craft Beer Festival happening this Saturday and Sunday at the PNE Fairgrounds. This event which started in 2010 hosting just 100 beer lovers and 15 craft breweries has grown exponentially. This weekend you can expect over 300 beers and ciders for tasting. In case you missed that, if you are not a beer lover, there will also be 10 cideries on hand to mix things up. There will be local offerings of craft beer and cider as well as a number from across the border as well as 10 independent craft berries from the BC Ale Trail. If you get hungry, there will be a good selection of food trucks on hand for the festival. The Craft Beer Week Festival runs this Saturday, June 8th from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Sunday, June 9th from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. Tickets are $39 for one day, or you can purchase a weekend pass for $65. Tickets are available through Ticketleader. Note: You must be 19+ to attend the Vancouver Craft Beer Week Festival and 2 pieces of ID are required for entry.
