Artful Sundays Happen In The Napier Greenway August 12th to September 2nd

Artful Sundays 2018 PosterArtful Sundays return to the Britannia Community Centre this summer.  If you aren’t familiar with this event, it is weekly outdoor visual art market which happens over 4 Sundays in the Napier Greenway.  The first event kicks off Sunday, August 12th from Noon to 5:00 pm and for the next 3 Sundays following. Each Artful Sunday brings a variety of local artists, workshops, artist demonstrations, live music and more. We see Clara Shandler, the Sidewalk Cellist will be on hand as will Wonky Clay Pots. Lots to do and see and it’s free to wander and take in the art that surrounds us.  The event takes place in the Napier Greenway at Napier Street & Commercial Drive from Noon – 5:00 pm each Sunday from August 12th to September 2nd.

ILiveInEastVan Tote Bags

ILiveInEastVanLogo2018If you’ve been following along with ILiveInEastVan, you will see we have launched a new logo recently pictured here. This now copyrighted design pays homage to the street signs we grew up with in East Van with a nod to the ever present crow in Vancouver.

On launching our new logo, we received some positive feedback. So we are excited to announce we have created a limited run of hand screened nylon tote bags with this original design.  These bags were hand screened here in East Vancouver by Mike Jackson of Grubwear in Mount Pleasant. If you don’t know Mike, he has been creating designs for street wear since 1988. Mike began working out of the back of his Honda Civic and is now situated at Fraser & Kingsway in East Vancouver.  Our aim in creating these bags is threefold.  One to support local East Van businesses in the design, sale and production of ILiveInEastVan bags. Second creating a sturdy reusable bag which we hope you will use often in place of single use plastic bags. Lastly, a bag that shows your pride in living in East Van.

If you wish to purchase the ILiveInEastVan Nytlon Tote Bag, it is currently available at Second Nature Home at 3565 Commercial Street in Cedar Cottage. ILiveInEastVan is now also on Etsy. We are offering free delivery of any purchase to residents of Vancouver until August 30th.

We are looking at other colours and styles of bags and are open to suggestions of what you’d like to see.  Canvas bags are in the works.  We’ve already had requests for t-shirts with the new logo. Vancouver Mural Festival August 6 – 11, 2018

VancouverMuralFestival2018The 3rd Annual Vancouver Mural Festival is back in various locations in East Vancouver August 6 – 11, 2018.  The event is organized by Create Vancouver Society which is dedicated to artistic and cultural development in Metro Vancouver.  The permanent large-scale public murals created as part of this festival will form a part of the City’s cultural legacy. And honestly the ones we’ve seen to date, are pretty spectacular.  This year’s event is slated to be even bigger and better and will include a Celebration Concert on Saturday, August 11st in Jonathan Rogers Park.  This is a large park located at West 8th Avenue and Manitoba Street in Mount Pleasant which will host the outdoor concert.  The venue for the concert will be open from Noon to 9:30 pm which will include an afternoon program featuring various activities with the concert being held in the evening between 6:00 pm and 9:30 pm.  The concert line up includes A Tribe Called Red and Charlotte Day Wilson. Tickets are priced at $30, $25 and children under 12 years of age are free when attending with an adult that has purchased a ticket. You can purchase tickets through Live Nation or at Red Cat Records.  We encourage you to stop by and check out the artistic talent for this year’s Vancouver Mural Festival. This There – The Cultch July 27th & 28th

A production asking the big question ‘what does it mean to live’? The meaning will vary from one person to the next, but this show delves into the lives of Alison and Maddie who are at crossroads in life and rethinking their chosen demanding professions. Tickets are $30 or $20 for artists, low income and students.  To purchase tickets, visit The Cultch.

Fraser River Walk – Dogwood Brewing – July 27th

You are invited to join the Sunset Artists in Communities Project ‘wayfinding/wandering’ for an evening walk to explore the Fraser River along the southern border.  Meeting spot is Dogwood Brewing at 7:00 pm. You are, of course, welcome to stop by early for a pre-walk pint from 6:00 pm onwards.

Adult Nights – Playland – July 27th

The last evening for Playland Nights happens this Friday for the 19+ crowd.  There will be beverages, alcoholic and non, midway games, rides, DJs spinning tunes with a definite party theme. There is also a burlesque show and the opportunity to test your lumber Jack/Jill skills with axe-throwing which we understand there’s an extra charge to participate in.  Tickets are $31 in advance or $34 at the gate.

Fundraiser: Families Together! – Wise Hall – July 29th

This Sunday, a group of local musicians including Professor Banjo, Ginalina Music and Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz will be hosting a fundraiser Families Together! The event is to help raise funds to support aid organizations helping family reunification at the US/Mexico border.   This issue is far away in distance, but not in the hearts and minds of many.  The event is a family oriented event, so along side the music, there will be a family craft centre hosted by The Learnary. Doors open at 1:30 pm and musical performances happen between 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Suggested donation is $10 – $50, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Breakfast & Blooms – Olive & Wild – July 29th

Il Fioraio Florist invites you to a floral workshop this Sunday at a great space on Main Street, Olive & Wild.  In this workshop you learn some basics of flower arranging along with some great tips.  Mimosa and light breakfast included.  You will leave with a beautiful centerpiece and the opportunity to shop at Olive & Wild after the workshop at a discount.  Cost of the workshop is $69. Textile Sale – Our Social Fabric – July 29th

Our Social Fabric is hosting another textile sale and they are over loaded with zippers, so will be giving some away for free.  If you need sewing supplies, DO check this spot out. They take new fabrics no longer needed to keep them from heading to the landfill. Prices are very reasonable. Sale happens this Sunday, July 29th from 10 am – 1 pm. at 1275 Venables Street at Clark in the Russell/Hendrix Building, 2nd floor, Unit #270.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you are a night owl, The Rio Theatre is showing a classic movie, Invasion of The Body Snatchers at 11:30 pm Friday night.   If you love the cats and burlesque, there’s a burlesque inspired FUNdraiser happening at The Rio Theatre Saturday night. The 42nd Annual Powell Street Festival August 4 & 5, 2018

PowellStreetFestival42Canada’s largest celebration of Japanese Canadian arts & culture will be held on August 4th and 5th in Vancouver’s historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood. The 42nd Annual Powell Street Festival takes place in Oppenheimer Park as well as the surrounding areas including the Firehall Arts Centre, Vancouver Buddhist Temple and the Vancouver Japanese Language School. There is a long line up of events including Sumo Wrestling, Japanese Food, Martial Arts, Dance, Taiko Drumming, Walking Tours, Anime, Film, Literary Events, Live Music and much more.  Festival highlights include a performance by virtuoso percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani and the Nakatani Gong Orchestra as well as Sadgrrrl rocker Emma Lee Toyoda. Also on hand for this festival is an exhibit by international artists Chiharu Mizukawa & Nao Uda.  This barely scratches the surface. There’s much more happening. Movie Night In the Park – Trout Lake – July 20th

Collingwood Community Policing is hosting another movie night in the park Friday, July 20th at Trout Lake/John Hendry Park.  Movie gets under way at dusk. Note, this event is weather permitting. If it rains, the movie night will be postponed.

Summer Savour Festival – River District Town Centre – July 21st

River District and Wesgroup Properties are hosting 4 free summer events starting this Saturday, July 21st. This first event features wine and cheese samples from Everything Wine, local vendors, a few food trucks and music by Grooveport at 4:00 pm and The Booms hitting the stage at 7:00 pm. Bakery Pop Up – les amis du fromage – July 21st

Les amis du fromage’s East Van location at 843 East Hastings is again hosting a Bakery Pop Up this Saturday from Noon to 5:00 pm. Two Bald Bakers will be on hand with fresh bread from Noon until they run out.  

Vancouver Bonfire Sessions – Hastings Park Lagoon – July 21st

Jansport presents Bands and Bonfire Under The Night Sky.  This is a free event happening in Hastings Park from 6:00 – 10:00 pm this Saturday.  To register for the event, visit Eventbrite.

Introduction to Organic Gardening – Hastings Community Centre – July 21st

Village Vancouver is hosting a workshop this Saturday which covers the basics of planning and starting a food garden. Rhiannon Johnson leads the class in which you learn the simple technique of starting a plant indoors and then moving it outdoors into your garden space.  The cost is $18 and the reward is fresh veggies. Fiesta With Flamenco Music & Dance – Grandview Park – July 22nd 

You are invited to Grandview Park to experience some beautiful flamenco music and dance this Sunday, July 22nd from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. You are encouraged to bring a picnic basket with your favourite things and come down to enjoy the music and dance.  This is a free event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Made In The 604 – Heritage Hall – July 22nd

Made In The 604 is hosting a pop up market this Sunday, July 22nd at Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street.  As you might expect by the name, locally made products will be available. Tickets are $3.00 at the door with proceeds for admission going to Covenant House BC.  This summer market happens from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Looking for live music, David Blair is back from a tour in Europe and performing at Café Deux Soleils this Sunday at 8:00 pm. Cover is $10. For fun and laughs, the Geekenders are hosting The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Rio Theatre Saturday night at 11:15 pm. Three farmer markets are happening this weekend. Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back and it’s Berry Festival this Sunday and we expect that the winner of the BC Berry Pie Bake Off will be announced. This There Continues At The Cultch July 25-28, 2018

ThisHereWhat does it mean to live?  Big question right?  Everyone’s definition will be different. This There asks the big question in this production coming to The Cultch.  Follow Alison and Maddie who are at a crossroads in life.  Alison is a disenchanted actress and isn’t sure she wishes to continue in her chosen profession.  Maddie on the other hand is an entrepreneur who is the verge of selling her catering business she’s worked hard to build up over many years.  The couple take a trip to the West Coast for a quiet vacation and change of scenery and to visit Alison’s father. All with demanding careers in their own right, the trip brings things into focus for them all.  This There continues at The Cultch July 25-28.  Tickets are $30 with $20 tickets available for artist, low income and students.

Greek SummerFest – Boundary & 29th Ave. Until July 15th

Great food, live entertainment and dancing continues this weekend and then it’s done for another year.  The Greek Summerfest is happening at Boundary and 29th Avenue. Lots of great talent taking the stage this weekend including Greek sensation Yanni Sahamis and Grupo Asi Somos performing Venezuelan Music.  This is an all ages event and admission is free. Eastside Culture Crawl’s 3rd Annual Art, Bike, Beer Crawl– July 14th

This is a fundraiser for the Eastside Culture Crawl Society which does a great job of featuring  East Van artists. This event takes you to 4 breweries whether you wish to cycle or walk, your call.  Last stop is Strange Fellows Brewing which will be serving light bite as well.  To get your ticket, visit Eventbrite.

Miqayel Voskanyan & Friends – The Cultch – July 14th 

Miqayel Voskanyan and Friends will be performing at The Cultch this Saturday. This is an ethno-jazz and folk band based in Yerevan, Armenia. They have introduced jazz to the tar (a folk instrument used across the Caucasus and Iran), which we’ve learnt makes them stand out with a fresh, modern sound in world music.  This is a new genre of music that fuses old and new.  Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and available at The Cultch.

RecycleFest – Trout Lake – July 14th 

You are invited to stop by RecycleFest this Saturday at Trout Lake from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with your unwanted or broken small appliances and power tools. While there, enjoy free food, music, games and prizes and learn a little about recycling.

Weiner Dog Races – Hastings Racecourse – July 14th & 15th

Hastings Racecourse presents their Dog Days of Summer event, the very popular Weiner Dog Races.  Along with the races, there will be food trucks, craft beer and live music and we hope some shade and cooling mats for the hot dogs. Event happens both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. First race each day is at 1:50 pm.

Summer Series At Grandview Park – July 15th

The Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting a free family event at Grandview Park (Commercial Drive at Charles Street). You are invited to stop by between 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm for Zumba on the main stage, face painting, balloon twisting and more.

International Blues Music Day At The Rio Theatre August 4th

If you love blues music, The Rio Theatre is the place to be on Saturday, August 4th. Vancouver Blues Around Town is presenting The Wailin’ Walker Band and David “Boxcar” Gates to celebrate International Blues Music Day.  For a bit of background on the talent performing, first up is Al ‘Wailin’ Walker. Al was born and raised in Vancouver and is known for his infectious style of rhythm and blues.  He has been performing electric guitar solos with commanding locals for over 4 decades.  Al has shared the stage with Johnny Winter, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name just a few. David ‘Boxcar’ Gates also hails from Vancouver and has evolved into one of Canada’s most renowned acoustic guitar players. He was been wowing audiences for over 30 years.   This is a 19+ event. Tickets are available for $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Visit the Rio Theatre.ca for advance tickets. We’re pretty sure this will be a rockin’ good time.
