It’s that time of year again where the opportunities to shop local are abundant. There are some great artisan markets and craft fairs coming up to help you make your gift giving easy whether for Christmas or birthday gifts. We would like to repeat the phrase that often makes the rounds on social media “when you buy from a local maker, someone does a little happy dance”. It really is true. Did you know:
“for every $100 spent with a BC local business, $46 is re-circulated back into our BC economy versus $18 for multi nationals. Why? Because locally owned businesses circulate more dollars in the community compared to multinational organizations.”
When you buy from a local maker, you’re supporting your neighbor next door, your co-worker working full-time and holding down a side gig, moms carving out some extra income while still being home with their families. All have created a business doing something they love and are passionate about. We are 100% behind supporting those local dreamers and makers. Also, buying local is better for the environment. Items at markets are not being shipped long distances and there is usually much less packaging involved. All around win win. To that end, we have again created a list of all the artisan markets and craft fairs happening in East Vancouver this holiday season. We hope you will come out to some of these events and support the local makers and artisans.

If you love improv, you will want to check out the great line up coming to The Cultch this month. The Cultch is hosting the Vancouver Improv between September 24 to 28, 2019. There’s a whole lot of talent hitting the stage. From the local talent pool, you can expect to see The Sunday Service, Nasty Women, Little Mountain Improv and Shakespeare After Dark. From further afield, comes talent from Portland, Los Angeles, Toronto and as far away as Israel. Reminder to those attending, the shows are all ages, but some are rated 14A due to the mature themes and strong language. Shows take place in the Historic Theatre as well as the Vancity Culture Lab in The Cultch. Tickets range between $18 and $22. To see the full line and to grab your tickets, visit 
SpeakEasy Theatre’s critically acclaimed production The Shipment is back at the Firehall Arts Centre September 24th to October 5th. Korean-American playwright Jean Lee brings to the stage a modern minstrel show about black identity meant to wake the world to the ridiculous narratives in dominant media. You can expect some brazen mash ups, stereotypes and clichés portrayed throughout what Vancouver Presents calls a “bold, honest and hilarious” production. The Firehall’s Artistic Producer Donna Spencer calls Jean Lee “one of America’s most fearless and exciting playwrights.” This is production to watch. For tickets, visit 
In case you missed the recent news, the infamous local crow, Canuck The Crow, has not been seen since August 30th. His human friend Shawn Bergman is concerned for his well being and his mate, Cassiar, has been calling for him, as Canuck became a parent this year. Canuck also recently became a federally protected bird. Recent possible sightings haven’t turned up anything as yet. Canuck has 2 ankle bracelets one orange and the other silver which makes him unique as for sighting him. The 5th First Pick Handmade takes over the Heritage Hall on Saturday, September 14th. The 3300 square foot space will be transformed into a Handmade Pop Up Department Store. You can expect to find a wide range of high quality, fashion forward Canadian made clothing, footwear, jewellery, lingerie, active wear, scarves and hats. If that list isn’t long enough, there will also be other winter accessories including belts, bags and wallets as well as skincare products and small batch fragrances. The items are handcrafted with an eye to sustainability. If there’s something specific you are looking for men’s or women’s wear, there’s a whole lot of talent coming to this event. We’ve set out all the designers that will be on hand.
