East Van Crusher – Maritime Labour Centre – May 25th

Vancouver Craft Beer Week kicks off with the East Van Crusher at the Maritime Labour Centre Friday, May 25th.  This action packed event features a wide array of canned beer and semi-famous local personality, Grant Lawrence, who will be opening the 10 day event.  To keep everyone entertained during the evening, there will be live music by Alex Maher and JD Hebegebe.  Tickets are $25 which includes admission and 2 beers. ROVE: Mount Pleasant Art Walk – May 26th

ROVE is a free community event that takes place on Saturday, May 26th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Studios and galleries in Mount Pleasant open their doors and invite you to come check out a variety of artists. To see which spots are participating, visit ROVE’s Facebook page

Cedar Cottage Community Garden Spring Fling – Cedar Cottage May 26th

Cedar Cottage Community Garden is hosting their 10th Annual Spring Fling this Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  This free community event will feature live music and garden tours.  Live plants and food will be available for sale.  Many local businesses will be participating in the event which also provides organizers the opportunity to raise some funds for special projects. Stop by and show your support. You can’t miss the community garden when driving along Victoria Drive, it’s where the Victoria Diversion starts before/after it changes to Commercial Drive.

Sing The Clash – Strange Fellows Brewing – May 26th

Strange Fellows Brewing is hosting the Impromptu Rock Choir this Saturday and they are going to be singing “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” by The Clash.  Entry is free with the purchase of a beer, or $5.00 donation to the Food Bank.  Event happens between 7:00 and 9:00 pm.

Parker Art Salon – 1000 Parker Street – May 26th & 27th

Parker Art Salon now in its 4th year happens at 1000 Parker Street this Saturday and Sunday.  It is a great opportunity to see the working space and art of over 200 artists including sculptors, painters, designers, furniture builders and much more.   The building itself is pretty iconic at over 100 years old.  This is a free event open to everyone and happens from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

 

Clothing Swap – Wise Hall – May 27th

Do you have clothes that you don’t wear? Maybe they are new, maybe just gently worn, but the fit or colour wasn’t quite right.  Either way, how about revamping your wardrobe in an eco-friendly way? A Clothing Swap happens this Sunday, May 27th at the Wise Hall. Cost is $10 to participate.  You drop your clothes off between 12:30 and 1:00 pm pay your $10 and you can shop and pick up new treasures until 3:00 pm.

Zumbeer – Andina Brewing Co. –  May 27th

You are invited to stop by Andina Brewing Co. this Sunday, May 27th for a Zumba class led by Zumba Vancouver which is followed by a flight or glass of beer. Cost is $20. Fun kicks off at X time. To register, visit ZumbaVancouver.ca.

Looking for comedy? Local comedian, Graham Clark, hosts his Laugh Gallery event Monday at Havana Theatre 9 pm.  Three farmer markets are happening this weekend. Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market kicks off at 10:00 am till 2:00 pm at Dude Chilling Park. Molly Misbegotten – Havana Theatre – May 15th to 19th 

An intimate coming-of-age four act drama with a naive-adolescent named Elijah Berner who succumbs to the harsh realities of attempting to recreate a moment he lost long ago. Show happens in the Havana Theatre tucked in the back of Havana Restaurant. Tickets are $15 and available through Brown Paper Tickets.

INGITE! Youth Driven Arts Festival – The Cultch – May 15th – 19th

For one week in May, The Cultch is taken over and transformed by young people. Hundreds of youth are involved in what has grown to be Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival. IGNITE! showcases music, dance, and spoken word. It will also  feature three one-act plays, a visual arts exhibit, variety shows featuring improv, drag, circus arts, and much more. Bakery Pop Up – les amis du fromge (East Van) – May 19th

Les amis du fromage’s East Van location, 843 East Hastings Street, is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop this Saturday, May 19th. This week Lakehouse Foods will be on hand from Noon to 5:00 pm or until they sell out.

Forage – Trillium North Park – May 19th

Learn to gather, use and make items from wool this Saturday, May 19th at Trillium North Park.  This is one of six free sessions featuring different local fibres. This week, learn traditional hand skills that are the foundation of many weaving techniques. Event runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Victoria Day Family Fun – Trout Lake –  May 21st

Trout Lake Community Centre is hosting some free family fun this Monday, May 21st from 10:00 am to Noon.  They will have a bouncy castle set up indoors, arts and crafts and games.  Free for all to attend, but pre-registration is requested.

Classical Guitar Open Mic Night – Café Deux Soleils – May 11th

Do you own or play a classical guitar? You are invited to an open mic night at Café Deux Soleils tonight, May 11th. You are welcome to come play in a casual setting.  If you are interested in performing, just drop them a note you are stopping by.  Show kicks off at 8:30 pm.

Bears – The Cultch – May 11th – 13th

A political play about pipelines, Bears, is on at The Cultch this weekend.  It is a multi-disciplinary dark comedy is about the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline.  This is an Indigenous-led play told through dramatic storytelling and choreography, with an eight-person chorus, enchanting projections, and an evocative electronic soundscape.  The production has only a short run. If you wish to catch it, tickets can be purchased online at The Cultch.

23rd Annual Stone Soup Festival – Britannia Community Centre – May 12th

A great free community event happens this Saturday, May 12th at Britannia Community Centre from Noon – 5 pm.  The 23rd Annual Stone Soup Festival happens which celebrates food, art, the environment and community.

Grow A Great Organic Garden – Italian Cultural Centre – May 12th 

The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting a workshop for aspiring gardeners on Saturday, May 12th.  Shauna MacKinnon will lead this workshop and teach you how to grow a veggie garden using organic practices.  Cost is $25 per person. Hammer and Tong Present the East Van Showcase – Rio Theatre – May 13th 

Check out film students from all over BC that will compete in the first ever Student Showdown at the Rio Theatre Sunday evening.  Students from SFU, UBC, Capilano and Vancouver Film School will be featured along with some international shorts. Event kicks off at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Put Yourself First Without The Guilt – Trout Lake Community Centre May 16th

The City of Vancouver and Trout Lake Community Centre are hosting a FREE interactive workshop for women on May 16th.  If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and underappreciated, you are invited to attend to learn more to how make more time for yourself.  Workshop happens from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Got Craft – Maritime Labour Centre – May 5th & 6th

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Got Craft is happening at the Maritime Labour Centre at 1880 Triumph Street Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The event features  local artisans including some favourites such as The Lemon Square, East Van Bees, Salty Cookie Co. and East Van Jam for something edible.  Newbies include Scouter Wear Dog Wear and Riding The Pine which has some cool designs featuring hockey sticks. Mother’s Day Crafternoon – Lupii Café – May 5th

An interesting creative workshop is happening at Lupii Café in Champlain Heights this Saturday.  Crafting With Crap is hosting an upcycling workshop in partnership with Lupii Café.  You will learn to make some crafty gifts for mom including DIY bath salts and reusable packaging. 21st Century Flea Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – May 6th

The 21st Century Flea Market happens this Sunday, May 6th at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  If you are a collector of bargain hunter, this is the spot for you. Spring/Summer Farmer Markets Kick Off This Weekend

This weekend Spring and Summer markets kick off.  First up is Riley Park Farmers Market at Ontario St. & 30th Avenue this Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm.  There is one more week of the Hastings Park Winter Farmers Market this Sunday from 10 am – 2 pm.  Next Saturday Trout Lake Farmers Market returns to Trout Lake.

Documentary ‘Directly Affected’ – Rio Theatre – April 28th 

This compelling new documentary DIRECTLY AFFECTED, takes an in-depth look at the issues surrounding the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Zack will also be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A, as will some other special guests.  Movie kicks off at 3:15 pm.

Yeast Van’s Hop Circuit – Eat Van Craft Breweries – April 22nd 

Love tasting beer and meeting other beer loves? You may wish to check out Yeast Van’s Hop Circuit happening this Sunday, April 22nd from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  East Van craft breweries and distilleries are hosting an open house.  Stop by and sample beer, get a tour of what happens behind the scenes. Food trucks will be dotted throughout East Vancouver at the various breweries/distilleries.   Our friends at Vancouver Brewery Tour have aptly called it the “Super Bowl of craft beer events”.  Expect line ups, especially if the weather is good.  

Make It! Vancouver – PNE Forum – April 20 to 22, 2018

Make It! Vancouver is at the PNE Forum this weekend with 180 makers.  The show will feature a host of items including accessories, home décor, delectable items to eat and drink, art, jewellery, leather goods, baby clothes and toys, accessories for your dogs. There will be food trucks and a beer garden to help sustain you while you wander and shop. Make It! Vancouver kicks off Friday, April 20th at 11:00 and goes till 9:00 pm that day and continues Saturday (10-6) and Sunday (11-5). Earth Day Parade & Festival – The Drive/Grandview Park – April 21st

8th Annual Earth Day Parade & Festival take place this Saturday, April 21st.  Parade starts at 1:00 pm at Commercial & Broadway and makes its way to Grandview Park.  The festival begins in Grandview Park at 1:45 pm and goes till 3:00 pm. Lots of family friendly activities.

Park Earth Day Celebration – Everett Crowley – April 21st

Volunteers are back at Everett Crowley Park this Saturday, April 21st planting trees, native shrubs and pollinating insects. Organizers have partnered with the Vancouver Park Board and Wildcoast Ecological Society and will be leading a salmon berry planting along the banks of Kinross Creek. The Environmental Youth Alliance will be giving away native plants. There will be interpretative walks along with fresh refreshments.   This is an all ages family event and happens from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

2nd Annual Earth Day Fundraiser & Student Art Show – Bandidas Taqueria – April 22nd

This Sunday, April 22nd, Bandidas Taqueria will be hosting a community fundraiser, student art show and sidewalk festival in support of RAVEN Trust’s Heiltsuk campaign.  This is an all day affair that starts at 9:00 am and goes till midnight.   Bandidas Taqueria will be featuring regular brunch inside as well as a sidewalk festival outside.   They have partnered with Victory Gardens who will be on hand with seeds and seedlings for sale, Earnest Ice Cream’s truck will be parked out front will ALL proceeds going to RAVEN Trust.  100% of the profits from the sale of food and drink on April 22nd will be donated to RAVEN Trust.

24 Hour Bike-A-Thon – 1739 Venables Street – April 13th

If you love bikes, or want to learn more about them (ie. fixing them), there’s an interesting event happening this Friday. It’s a 24 Hour Bike-A-Thon. Kickstand Community Bike Shop which will help teach people that have never built a bike (but note most of the work will be refurbishing instead of starting from scratch). They plan to build 24 bikes in 24 hours with sustenance from Moja Coffee and Renzo’s Cafe. Event starts at 6:00 pm at 1739 Venables.

Bird on Stilts Workshop – Trout Lake Community Centre – April 15th

Birds on Parade will be hosting a free workshop at Trout Lake Community Centre this Sunday, April 15th.  Once the stilts are completed, you will be invited to participate in upcoming parades around the City. For more information, visit Birds On Parade.

The Second Annual East Van Old Time Social is a weekend event dedicated to old-time string band music, and up-beat, beginner friendly, live music square dances. Feast of Fools – Strange Fellow Brewing – April 7th

Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen – Firehall Arts Centre – April 21st

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. Rio Theatre – Old School #SaveTheRio Fundraisers – March 30th and 31st 

If you are a fan of the Rio Theatre and wish to support a great spot for independent theatre, musicians and performers, check out the telethon like fundraising events happening this weekend. First up, is An Evening With Kevin Smith. There are 2 shows 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday, March 30th. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Golden Egg Hunt – River District – April 1st

River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a golden egg hunt Sunday, April 1st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be chocolate egg hunts, balloons, cotton candy, crafts, face painting and a chocolate bunny draw.  Starbucks will be on hand serving hot chocolate and coffee. Romer’s Burgers providing frozen yogurt and mini doughnuts. This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Easter Eggstravaganza Swim – Britannia Pool – April 1st 

Britannia Pool at Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free family swim this Sunday, April 1st from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. They will also have some Easter treats on hand and games for everyone to play.

Holiday Free Skate – Britannia  Ice Rink – April 2nd

If you are looking to ice skate, Britannia Ice Rink is hosting a free family skate this Monday, April 2nd from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.

Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen – Firehall Arts Centre – April 21st

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. If you are looking for some live music this weekend, the Kin Balam Quartet is at Café Deux Soleils Saturday night at 8:00 pm.
