Les Amis du Fromage Celebrates 10 Years With Pop Ups Plus – March 9th

A favourite spot, les amis du fromage, celebrates 10 years in business this Saturday at their East Van location, 843 East Hastings in Strathcona.  Along with cheese samples, they will have a few delish businesses on hand with pop ups including Ritchie’s Bakery with breads, La Glace Ice Cream with handcrafted creamy goodness and Petit Four Pastries. If that’s not enough, there will be demos by Lee Murphy and she will showcase her cookbook The Preservatory. Stop by this Saturday and support local business.

Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop – Gaston Park – March 9th

Got a fruit tree in your yard or community garden that could be producing more? You are invited to join Randi-Lee Taylor of Simply Barefoot Garden Services for some old fashioned hands on pruning techniques. Learn how to prune fruit trees for maximum production, taste, and plant health in this hands on FREE workshop. If you have pruners, you are encouraged to bring the, although they will  have some on hand. Event takes place in Gaston Park this Saturday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

East End History Walk With James Johnstone – 696 East Hastings St. – March 9th

James Johnstone is back offering his East End History Walk this Saturday, March 9th.  Tour starts at The Heatley, 696 East Hastings at 10:00 am and runs for 2 1/2 – 3 hours. Cost is $20 per person.  To reserve your spot, email James at historywalks@gmail.com.

Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride – March 9th

The annual Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride happens this Saturday. All riders of all ages welcome. Crow inspired costumes are also encouraged.  Ride kicks off at a NEW LOCATION this year at the Central Valley Greenway and Garden Drive (one block west of Nanaimo). Ride begins at 5:30 pm.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue  – March 9th and 10th

Looking for some vintage? Maybe some collectibles or handmade items? The Eastside Flea is one of a couple options this weekend. The Flea happens Saturday and Sunday at 550 Malkin Avenue in Strathcona from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  There of course food trucks at the ready in case you get hungry.

Bridal Swap – Croatian Cultural Centre – March 10th

The Original Bridal Swap happens Sunday at The Croatian Cultural Centre from Noon to 4:00 pm. If you are planning a wedding, or even a big party, there are some great colourful gently used items at great deals.  Tickets are available online or at the door. Main Street Mixed Bag – The Ellis Building – March 10th 

This Sunday, Main Street Mixed Bag takes over The Ellis Building, 1024 Main Street. This is as the name implies a mixed bag of yard sale vendors, collectibles, vintage and handmade.  Entry is free and dogs are welcome on a leash.  The market happens 11:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Biggest Dog Meet Up #5 – John Hendry Park – March 10th

Another large dog meet up is happening at John Hendry Park this Sunday from Noon to 4:00 pm.  Bring your dog and your friends.

SPRING FORWARD – March 10thSpring Time Change

Don’t forget, clocks Spring Forward for Daylight Savings Time kicks in at 3:00 am on March 10th in Canada.  We figure if we add a picture of flowers, it will encourage Spring. We are ever hopeful! Enjoy the extra hour.

Discussion: Passive Home Building – Vancouver Tool Library – March 1st

If you are interested in home building, Vancouver Tool Library member Steven Bishop will lead a discussion on the subject Friday evening.  Steven is a Passive House Consultant and Instructor in the Practical Energy and Advanced Knowledge for Buildings Certificate Program at Douglas College.  Vancouver Tool Library is located at 3448 Commercial Street. Things get under way at 6:30 pm. No cost to the event.

Wine & Plants – Figaro’s Garden Centre – March 1st

It’s the first Friday of the month which means Figaro’s Garden Centre, 1896 Victoria Drive, invites plant lovers to stop by between 3:30 and 6:00 pm for a glass of wine and to talk plants.  Have questions, want to meet others in the area who are digging the garden scene? You are hereby invited.

Square Dance Party – Wise Hall – March 1st

Paul Silveria aka Professor Banjo and The Estro-Jennies are hosting square dancing and live music at the Wise Hall Friday night. Everyone is welcome. There will be lessons for those that don’t know. So come on down and learn. Doors open at 8:00 pm, fun begins at 9:00 pm. Tickets are $17.50 online and $25 at the door. This is a 19+ event.

Oh Man! – The Drive Coffee Bar – March 1st & 3rd

Jo Dworschak, creator of Story Story Lie, brings her multimedia monologue about being a mom trying to overcome her fear of men before having one in Oh Man!  The show for 2 nights only takes place in a more intimate venue, being The Drive Coffee, 1670 Commercial Drive.   Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Better Than This – Havana Theatre – March 1st & 2nd

The production Better Than This kicks off this Friday at Havana Theatre.  This original show celebrates iconic female characters in musical theatre and women’s changing roles within this genre.  Songs from Chicago, West Side Story and Wicked will be feature. Tickets are $24 and available through Showpass.

Children of God – York Theatre – Until March 10th

A production that delves into some of Canada’s shameful history with a great script, humour and humanity. Havana Theatre hosts some unique comedy this Friday and Saturday night. An emerging young comic, Ed Hill, takes the stage for 2 shows on Friday and Saturday night.  Ed, originally from Taiwan, has performed all over the world has received numbers Best Comedian accolades as well as being named Comic to Watch in 2018.  Tickets are $12. JFL Northwest Presents Nicole Byer – Rio Theatre – February 23rd

Looking for some comedy this weekend? Nicole Byer is performing two shows this Saturday night at the Rio Theatre.  Nicole is an actress, comedian and writer who hosts the baking show Nailed It currently on Netflix.  She also has a sitcom loosely based on her life. El Camino’s is hosting their 7th Annual Oscar Party this Sunday, February 24th. Festivities get under way as of 3:00 pm which the red carpet madness gets under way.  The awards ceremony doesn’t begin until 5:00 pm.

Community Skate – PNE Agrodome – February 24th

It hasn’t quite been cold enough to skate on local rinks, but you can grab your ice skates and head to the PNE Agrodome this Sunday.  A Community Skate will be happening from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Cost is $3 for adults 19+, Senior 65+ and Youth 13-18 $2.50, Child 3-12 $2.00 and 2 years and under free.  Reminder, you do need to bring your own skates & helmets. Rentals will not be available.

Red’s Annual Garage Sale/Swap Meet – Trev Deely – February 24th

If you love motorcycles and tinkering with them, then you likely already know about this event. In case you don’t, the Trev Deely Dealership at 1875 Boundary Road is hosting Red’s Annual Garage Sale and Swap Meet this Sunday.  It’s an indoor event with space for up to 65 vendors. Documentary ‘Free Solo’  – Rio Theatre – February 16th & 18th

Oscar nominated documentary FREE SOLO comes to the Rio Theatre this weekend for 2 showings.  This is a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber who prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock, the 3,000 foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope. We hear this is an edge-of-your seat thriller.  Free Solo shows Saturday, February 16th at 12:15 pm and Monday, February 18th at 3:20 pm.

Totem Pole Raising Ceremony – Collingwood Neighbourhood House – January 12th

This Saturday witness one of the those rare opportunities a Totem Pole Raising Ceremony. The event begins at 10:30 am with a community parade from Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street, to Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Annex at 3690 Vanness Avenue. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Unscriptured: The Extended Version  – Havana Theatre – January 11th & 12th

A 2018 Vancouver Pick of the Fringe award winning comedy, Unscriptured is at Havana Theatre this Friday and Saturday night. The production is a completely improvised church service for a religion made up on the spot. You, the audience, gets to make the suggestions.  This formerly 1 man show has been expanded to include a choir and guest preachers.  Tickets are $5.00 and a collection plate will get circulated after the show in true church form. Comedy For A Cure – Rio Theatre – January 12th

You are invited for an evening of comedy with Charlie Demers, Jacob Samuel and host Katie-Ellen Humphries. These three are regulars on CBC’s The Debaters and will be on stage this Saturday for a Funny Fun FUNdraiser at the Rio Theatre to benefit the Tumour Foundation of BC and children and individuals with neurofibromatosis (NF). Tribute to David Bowie – Rickshaw Theatre – January 12th

This Saturday night a group of local talents including Cass King, The Next Right, We Found A Lovebird and Pointed Sticks will play tribute to David Bowie at the Rickshaw Theatre.  All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Tickets are $15. For advance tickets, visit Rickshaw Theatre.

Circle Game: Reimagining The Music Of Joni Mitchell – Firehall Arts Centre – January 12th

The Firehall Arts Centre brings the music of a Canadian icon to the stage this weekend with the Circle Game: Reimagining the Music of Joni Mitchell. A stellar line up of musicians will be performing her songs as of this Saturday. For tickets information, visit Firehall Arts Centre. 

Clueless: The Improvised Murder Mystery – Havana Theatre – January 13th

Not ready for the weekend to be over come Sunday?  Clueless: The Improvised Murder Mystery may just be the ticket. Who did it? Mrs. Peacock in the pantry with poison. Mr. Black in the Billiards room with a blunder bass. Miss Scarlett in the scullery with a scalpel. Six suspects. Seven rooms. Eight weapons. No Clue. You are invited to come help solve the murder and catch the villain. Fun gets under way at 9:00 pm. Tickets are $12 and available through Showpass.

Old Time Dance Party – Wise Hall – January 4th

If you love to square dance, or want to learn, Friday night the Wise Hall is the place to be. Tappalachian String Band provides the tunes while Paul and guest caller Sean Fenstemaker teach and call all the moves right on the floor. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $17.50 in advance or $25 at the door.

Body Soul Spirit Expo – Croatian Cultural Centre January 4th – 6th

The Body Soul Spirit Expo happens this weekend Friday to Sunday at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  Having checked this out last year, there are lectures and workshops that run all day on a variety of topics.  Lots of exhibitors with an array of products and services surrounding wellness, alternative therapies, healing arts, intuitive arts, metaphysics, aromatherapy and much more.  If you are curious about something, this is a great place to ask questions and gather information. East Van Panto: Wizard of Oz – The York Until January 6th 

Last weekend to catch the East Van Panto at The York Theatre. This is a whole lot of fun for all ages.  We highly recommend this for a fun night out, or if you prefer a matinee. Tickets available via The Cultch.

Baba Yaga & The Black Flower – Vancouver Puppet Theatre – January 5th

Looking for something to do with the young ones indoors?  Vancouver Puppet Theatre is offering two shows this Saturday at 2050 Scotia Street at Noon.  First up is Baba Yaga & The Black Flower with marionettes and next is Kind Heart using shadows. Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Marathon – Rio Theatre – January 5th & 6th

If you are a Lord Of The Rings fan, you may wish to check out the movie marathon happening at the Rio Theatre this Saturday and Sunday. The first part Saturday kicks off at Noon sharp but doors open at 10:30 am. It is recommended to come early to grab a good seat. Costumes are encouraged.
