Butcher – The Cultch – Till March 31st

Not for the light of heart, this stage thriller is on now at The Cultch till March 31st. If you missed our contributing writer’s review Nicole Alivojvodic check out Butcher to see what this psychological crime thriller is about.

Blackbird – Backspace – March 21st to April 1st

A play dealing with some poignant subject matter is happening at Backspace, 1318 Grant Street.  The production touches on the relationship of Una, a 12 year old girl, and Ray a 40 year old male. The two had a sexual relationship for which Ray served a sentence, changed his name and began a new file, but Una tracked him down and confronted him, but the question is what does she want?  The play features a great line up of local talent including local musician Rodney DeCroo.  Tickets are $15 and available through Eventbrite.

Made On Salt Spring – Heritage Hall – March 23rd to 25th

This weekend over 40 artisans from Salt Spring Island will be at the Heritage Hall with a wide variety of offerings including pottery, jewellery, food, woodwork and much more.  The event kicks off Friday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and continues Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and again Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Vancouver Gem & Mineral Show – PNE Forum – March 23rd to 25th 

Vancouver Gem & Mineral Show is happening at the PNE Forum this weekend. There will be a wide array of offerings including crystals, gems, minerals, gems, Native art, hand carved stone and much more. To learn more, check out Vancouver Gem & Mineral Show.

Greyhaven Bird Sanctuary Open House – March 24th

Greyhaven Bird Sanctuary is hosting their last Open House at this location before they need to move. You are invited to stop by and meet a variety of exotic birds including macaws, amazons and cockatoos.  These exotic birds are available for adoption, so if you might be interested, this is a great opportunity to check things out. This is a free event happening from Noon to 4:00 pm, but registration is requested through Eventbrite.

History Walk With James Johnstone March 24th

Zumba & Beer – Andina Brewing – March 25th

If it’s burlesque you are looking for, the Rio Theatre has you covered. The Geekenders are hosting a show Friday and Saturday night. Love listening to live jazz? Tangent Cafe on Commercial Drive has the Elliot Freedman Group playing this Sunday starting at 6 pm. June Hunter Studio Sale – 2785 Parker Street – February 10th

East Van artist and nature lover June Hunter is having a studio sale this weekend. So if you wish to pick up something special for a Valentine, an upcoming birthday or for yourself, this Saturday is your chance. Her studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area. Sale happens 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Valentine’s cookies will be on hand for snacking.

Hearts Workshop – Britannia Community Centre – February 10th 

A Hearts Workshop is happening this Saturday at Britannia Community Centre from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Express your love with a myriad of collage, colour and sparkle options in this hands-on workshop. Make a gift for someone special, or how about love bombing your neighbourhood? All materials are supplied and all ages are welcome.

Family Day Community Skate -PNE Agrodome – February 12th

A community skate happens Monday, February 12th at the PNE Agrodome from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  Note, no rentals. You will need to bring your own skates and helmets which are required for all children 12 and younger.  Adults $3,Seniors/Youth (13-18): $2.50 and   Children (3-12): $2.00 and those 2 years and under are free.

Free Ice Skating/Kids Activities – Britannia Community Centre – February 12th

You are invited to come out and enjoy free ice skating at the ice rink at Britannia Community Centre from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.  There will also be arts and crafts available for kids.

Epic DVD Sale – Black Dog Video – 1470 Commercial Drive – February 15th 

If you are looking to stock up on your favourite movies to hold you over this wet Spring, you may wish to check out the Epic DVD Sale at Black Dog Video.  Sale happens Thursday, February 15th  at 1470 Commercial Drive from 9:00 to 11:00 pm.

2nd Annual Live Burlesque Tribute To David Bowie – Rio Theatre – January 12th

In honour of David Bowie’s passing, the ladies of Kitty Nights present a burlesque tribute to the one and only, David Bowie. Show takes place at the Rio Theatre. Event kicks off at 8:00 pm and tickets are available in advance online for $20, or at the door for $25.

River District – Open House – January 13th & 15th

City of Vancouver and Wesgroup Properties are hosting two open houses so the public can provide input on increasing density in Area 3. This plot of land is located in the far East end of the development by Boundary Road. For those that have thoughts on this latest development, stop by and provide your feedback. There are a number of issues that need addressing including transit, transportation and general amenities in the area. The open house is being held at 8683 Kerr Street on Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and Monday, January 15th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Holiday Puppet Show – 2050 Scotia Street – January 14, 2017

If you have young kids to entertain this weekend, you may wish to check out a puppet show entitled ‘The Winter’s Tales” being presented by The Vancouver Puppet Theatre.  The show is happening ta 2050 Scotia Street near East 2nd Street and Main Street. Vegan Italian Baking 101 – Italian Cultural Centre – January 15th

Learn to bake some delicious homemade treats from scratch without dairy or eggs. Earthquake Preparedness Workshop – Sunset Community Centre – January 16th

Sunset Community is hosting a free workshop to help you and your family get prepared in the event of an earthquake, but really any emergency.  Having attended one of these, there are some great tips you can take away from it, even if you don’t complete a full earthquake kit. We recommend you take the 1 ½ hours and attend this free workshop provided by the City of Vancouver. This one gets under way at 7:00 pm on January 16th. To register, visit City of Vancouver.

Grappa Tasting – Italian Cultural Centre – January 18th

If you love grappa, or want to learn more about it, Italian Cultural Centre is hosting a Grappa Tasting event on the evening of January 18th. Tickets are $52 and available online at the Italian Cultural Centre.

Community Skate at PNE Agrodome – December 29, 2017 + January 3, 2018

PNE Agrodome is hosting ice skating Friday, December 29th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Cost is $3 for adult, $2.50 for youth/senior, $2 for kids 3-12 and kids under 2 are free. Note, there are no skate rentals or helmets, you will need to bring your own. If you miss the skate on December 29th, it happens again January 3rd and 5th same time.

New Year’s Eve In East Van  – December 31, 2017 

You have a number of choices depending on what you are looking for.  If you are looking for dinner and dancing, we recommend Federico’s Supper Club. Perfect venue with great food, excellent service, dancing and a great night out.  If you prefer something a little on the naughty side, you may wish to check out Patrick Maliha’s 5th Annual Naughty Little New Year’s Eve Party at The Rio Theatre.  If you are looking for a family night out, Rocky Mountain Flatbread on Main Street is again hosting a 3 course dinner for adults and kids which includes pizza or pasta making.  For a laid back adult evening, Bodega on Main is hosting a casual event starting at 10:30 pm with a live DJ. There is a $20 cover charge which gets you in the door with a glass of champagne and canapes served which are served until 4:00 am.  The Cascade Room is hosting a British themed New Year’s Eve party from 2:00 pm as well as a  Late Night Menu from 10 pm to 2 am.

Transit Free – New Year’s Eve – December 31, 2017 to January 1, 2018

For those planning a night out this New Year’s Eve, we hope you plan to travel safe. We know all too well, cabs are near impossible to find. So keep in mind, transit is free from 5:00 pm on December 31st to 5:00 am on January 1st with an extended service. New Year’s Day In East Van – January 1, 2017 

Peruvian restaurant, ChiCha’s in Mount Pleasant is doing an New Year’s Brunch all day long. We hear it’s happy hour all brunch long.  Britannia Ice Rink at the Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free skate from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

East Van Panto – York Theatre – Until January 6th

This is your last week to catch the fun that is the East Van Panto on now at The York Theatre until January 6, 2018.  This is one show you don’t want to miss. Great family fun, the music alone is worth attending, but the performance, storylines and few political jabs just too much fun to pass up. Tickets start at $22. We love that this is an evening event, lots of great local vendors plus food trucks.

East Van artist, June Hunter, is having a one day studio sale this weekend Saturday, November 25th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.   June has a great selection of prints, art, jewellery, coasters the majority feature some aspect of nature. Whether you are looking for a birthday gift or Christmas gift, stop by June’s studio for some civilized leisurely shopping in the comfort of her studio. We expect there will be some cookies and refreshments on hand. Studio is located in the back of 2785 Parker Street. 

3rd Annual Burlesque Marathon – Rio Theatre – November 25, 2017 

The Rio Theatre hosts 25 burlesque dancers who will be performing for the camera to apply for festivals and competitions around the world. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Only Drunks & Small Children Tell The Truth – Firehall Arts Centre – Nov. 11, 2017

A play written by Indigenous playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, Only Drunks and Children Tell The Truth comes to the Firehall Arts Centre this Saturday, November 11th. The story is a gripping account of the “60’s scoop-up” phenomenon, in which Native children were taken from their families, their communities, and their culture to be adopted into white households.  Tickets are available from the Firehall Arts Centre.

Funny Man Fundraiser – Rio Theatre – November 11, 2017

You’re invited to a comedy fundraiser being held at the Rio Theatre this Saturday night. A funny line up of talent includes Kyle Bottom, Mayce Galoni, Mike McGuire and others who will be taking the stage to help raise funds for Tumour Foundation of BC. This organization assists individuals with neurofibromatosis. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

East Van Improv League – Havana Restaurant – November 12, 2017

Instant Theatre is launching the East Van Improv League. On hand will be veteran broadcasters to help ignite the rivalry and guide you through the action. This event happens Sunday in the theatre tucked in the back of Havana Restaurant.  Fun kicks off at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $8.00 at the door.

WISE Wednesday Drop-In Stich & Craft- Wise Hall – November 15, 2017 

If you’re crafty and want to hang out with other creative crafters, you may wish to check out the new WISE Wednesday Drop-In Stitch & Craft happening at the Wise Hall. Whether you knit, crochet, embroider, needlepoint or something else portable, stop by. Everyone is welcome. Girls Like That – Templeton Secondary School – November 2 – 10, 2017

Growing up a girl is frought with pitfalls, in the digital age they have become land mines.  Girls Like That showcases what it’s like growing up a girl in this technological age, but there are many other messages hidden in this production for everyone.  If you are a woman, any age, you should see this. Tickets are a very reasonable $10 and available through Eventbrite. The cast features high school students from the Lower Mainland including several from Templeton Secondary School. This is about as real as it gets. See it.

Icons Vintage Market – 1024 Main Street – November 3, 2017

Love vintage? Head over to ICONS Vintage Market this Friday, November 3rd at the Eastside Flea, 1024 Main Street. The event features vintage clothing, vinyl records, housewares, music, unique finds, food and drink specials along with pinball and a DJ.  Doors open at 6:00 pm. Admission is $3. This is an all ages event.

Square Dance – Wise Hall – November 3, 2017

If you always wanted to learn how to square dance, now’s your chance.  Professor Bango, Paul Silveria, is hosting an evening at the Wise Hall this Friday. This is a beginner friendly event. Tickets are $15 online or $20 at the door. 

Take Flight – Arts Factory – November 4, 2017 

You are invited to come celebrate 21 years of art creation at Eastside Culture Crawl’s 2017 launch party and benefit this Saturday. The first part of the evening is a reception with cocktails and appetizers and the first to get your hands on our 2017 program guide. At 8:30 pm, they open the doors to the public opening of the LIT Preview Exhibit  featuring 2017 Culture Crawl artists. 

East Van Opry – Rio Theatre – November 4, 2017 

Lots of local talent packed into the East Van Opry happening Saturday night at the Rio Theatre.  This event now in its 5th features country music and much more. Tickets are $24 in advance or $28 at the door.

Winter Farmers Market – November 4 & 5, 2017

Vancouver Farmer Markets kick off their winter markets this weekend.  Saturday’s market is at Nat Bailey Stadium from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Sunday’s market at Hastings Park on the PNE centregrounds also from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Come out and support your local growers and makers

Big Top Tuesday – Libra Room – November 7, 2017

Starting Tuesday, November 7th, Big Top returns to their famed weekly residency at The Libra Room. Music kicks off at 8:00 pm and winds down at 11:00 pm.

Accordion Noir Festival – Russian Hall – September 7-10, 2017

Vancouver Fringe Festival – September 7-17, 2017

The Vancouver Fringe Festival has officially kicked off and there are a number of great shows happening during the Festival. You can find out what it’s like to be in a blind man’s shoes in Bombay Black on now at The Cultch, or check out some young new talent in Cry Baby The Musical at The Firehall Arts Centre.

Tango Lessons – Italian Cultural Centre – September 8, 2017

In case you missed it, the Italian Cultural Centre is hosting weekly tango lessons every Friday night until the end of October. Classes run from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Cost is $20 per person per class, or you can register by the month at a cost of $60.

Studio Sale – June Hunter – September 9, 2017

One of our favourite East Van artists, June Hunter, who features nature in her work is having a 1 day Studio Sale this weekend. Her work includes prints, tiles, jewellery, art, calendars and much more.   It’s a great little space near Hastings Sunrise at 2785 Parker Street and takes place from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Drive-In Movie – River District – September 9, 2017

Drive-In Movies are back at River District in SE Vancouver starting Saturday, September 9th.  The evening hosts a double feature starting off with Cars 3 at 7:45 pm and Baby Driver at 10:00 pm. Cost is $20 per carload for one movie and $30 per carload for 2 movies.  Gates open at 6:45 pm and is first come first serve.

Cops and Kids – Grandview Park – September 10, 2017

Between Noon and 3:00 pm you are invited to stop by with the kids for a safety-oriented event being held in Grandview Park. Families have the opportunity to meet and interact with VPD officers, police dogs and horses.  Also on hand, will be first responders, transit police, members of the Vancouver Fire Department and BC Ambulance service.   The event includes activity stations such as the  Bike Rodeo and the Mini POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Training). This is a free event. Everyone welcome to attend.

Fall Fair – McSpadden Park (Victoria & 5th) – September 10, 2017

If you are looking for more free family fun, you may wish to check out the Fall Fair happening on Sunday, September 10th.  The festivities happen from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm and include a host of activities such as zucchini races and square dancing. We hear you will find real cows, pies, delish canned goods and much more.

Family Night Series – Grandview Park – August 25, 2017

The Commercial Drive Business Improvement Society is hosting a free community event in Grandview Park Friday, August 11th. The evening which runs from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm includes crafts for kids, poetry, photography and live music.

Grease Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – August 26, 2017

The Rio Theatre is hosting a Grease Sing-a-Long complete with lyrics on the screen, the bouncing ball, prop bags and contest. This is an all ages event and costumes are  encouraged and audience participation we are pretty sure mandatory. Small Town Artillery CD Release Concert – The Cultch – August 26, 2017

Musical event happening at The Cultch Saturday night. The horn-powered rock quintet Small Town Artillery releases their full-length, self-titled LP in The Historic Theatre. An evening designed to take the listener on an immersive, explosive, emotional and inevitable ride through the jungles of the heart. Also featured CBC Searchlight winners The Long War and Blues-rock swaggerers Years of the Wolf. Tickets are on a sliding scale $10-$40. For tickets, visit The Cultch.

Toast Pop Up Shop – The Pie Shoppe – August 26 & 27, 2017

The French sisters at The Pie Shoppe, 1875 Powell Street, will be featuring a brunch pop up with Chef Dakota this weekend.  They will be featuring Toast in many forms from around the City with a variety of toppings. Artful Sundays – Napier Greenway -August 27, 2017

Artful Sundays return to the Napier Greenway at the Britannia Community Centre this Sunday.  You can expect to find local artisans, workshops, demonstrations and live music.  Event happens Noon to 5:00 pm. It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

Summer Outdoor Concert + Lantern Procession – Trout Lake – August 30, 2017

You are invited to catch the last summer outdoor concert at Trout Lake Community Centre. The musical stylings of Checo Tohomaso who will be on stage at 6:30 pm.  After the concert, there will be a lantern procession around the lake at dusk. You will also have the opportunity stop by and make your own lantern from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm, or you can bring your own from home. Either way, we suspect it will be pretty magical, musicians will lead the parade around Trout Lake.

Looking for theatre? Havana Theatre is featuring the show Sexual Perversity in Chicago  until August 26th. Show follows a set of friends, two of whom are lovers. Tickets are $13.  If it’s movies you are after, Rio Theatre is ON this weekend with Dirty Dancing on Friday night at 9:00 pm for something fun. PNE Playland is on all weekend with food, beer, games, rides, Super Dogs, shopping & more. Musical performances this weekend include  the band Chicago on Friday night and Colin James on Saturday night. We took in the Colin James show last year, he always puts on an amazing show at this venue.
