Vancouver Fringe Festival – Various Venues Until 16th 

The Vancouver Fringe Festival continues this weekend at various venues in the City including The Cultch, The Havana Theatre in Havana Restaurant and Your Open Closet on Commercial Drive to name a few.  Reminder, Havana Theatre IS OPEN for the Vancouver Fringe Festival. 11th Annual Accordion Noir Festival – Wise Hall Sept. 14th – 16th

Lots of live music and dancing this weekend at the Wise Hall, not like there isn’t usually, but the 11th Annual Noir Festival happens Friday to Sunday at the Wise Hall. Tickets available through Brown Paper Tickets.

James Johnstone East End History Walk – September 15th

If you want to learn about the fascinating history of East Vancouver James Johnstone is your man. He has a wealth of knowledge of about the many faces and places of East Van from days long ago. This Saturday James will be hosting a walking history tour that starts at The Heatley, 696 East Hastings St. in Strathcona at 10:00 am. Cost is $20. We believe this is his last tour for the season.

Free Drive-In Movie – River District – September 15th

River District is hosting free drive-in movies this Saturday, September 15th.  The double feature this weekend will feature Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom at 7:15 pm and Jurassic Park 1 at 9:30 pm. Gates open at 6:30 pm.  This event is first come first serve as to space.

Westward Music Festival – Rio Theatre – September 15th

Westward Music Festival presents Jordan Klassen & Special Guests Luca Fogale and Abraham at the Rio Theatre this Saturday. Tickets are $15 and available via Westward FesWestward Fest. Note, the Festival also takes place Friday night at the Rio with a different line up of talent.

First Pick Handmade – Heritage Hall – Sept. 15th & 16th

First Pick Handmade happens at the Heritage Hall this weekend at which you will find 30 Canadian fashion and accessory designers. Whether it’s to browse or shop, stop by and see what our Canadian designers are working on.  First Pick Handmade happens 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3.00.

Meet & Greet The Candidates – Commercial Street Café Sept. 15th & 16th 

This weekend Commercial Street Café, 3599 Commercial Street, continues their series hosting meet and greets for those running for Mayor of Vancouver. This Saturday, come chat with Hector Bremner from 10:00 am to Noon. On Sunday, Ken Sim will be hand also from 10:00 am to Noon.

Free Movie ‘Maudie’ – Britannia Community Centre – September 16th

Britannia Community Centre is hosting another free movie Sunday night 6:00 pm. This week they are featuring Maudie along with free popcorn.

West Side Story Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – September 16th

As part of the world-wide celebration the legendary composer, Leonard Bernstein, the Rio Theatre is hosting a celebratory Sing-A-Long screening of his restored masterpiece West Side Story this Sunday at 6:00 pm. This is an all ages show. 

Free Yoga – Eastside Fitness – September 17th

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Looking for live music this weekend? Café Deux Soleils has live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights and this week Natasha D’Agastino takes the stage from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. If you are looking for jazz in the afternoon, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Never Still At The Firehall Arts Centre September 26th – 29th, 2018

Never Still the newest work by Vanessa Goodman is inspired by the inherent conflicts and dichotomies of water. The production is both graceful and challenging, much like humanity itself. The show has social, environmental and biological themes explored within this highly physical new work.  Never Still dives into the distinctive and overlap between three different systems of circulation: global water cycles, communication technology and fluids within the body.  “We are living in an increasingly polarized culture,” says Donna Spencer, the Firehall Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer. “And it is our role as artistic creators to encourage audiences to consider, through what they are seeing on stage, how inextricably linked we all are in finding our way through these challenging times.”  Donna goes onto say that this Season the Firehall Arts Centre’s programming is “about choices – ones we make, the one we think we should make but don’t and the influences around us that colour that decision-making”. This production is a collaboration Shion Skye Carter, Stéphanie Cyr, Bynh Ho, Scott Morgan, Alexa Mardon, James Proudfoot and Lexi Vajda.   Never Still is at the Firehall Arts Centre from Wednesday, September 26th to Saturday, September 29th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available online at Firehall Arts Centre.

Side Glance With Al Tee – Why You Should Vote For Stuart For Parks Board

StuartMackinnonI am one of those cynical types who harbors deep skepticism towards politicians. I have never voted for a major political party’s candidate and often vote Communist or Marxist-Leninist as form of protest. Civically I generally mark an X on my ballot for the fringe and the extreme, be it Jamie Lee Hamilton or Cowboy Bob Ellis. I am telling you this so you’ll know I’m not easily swayed, and therefore genuine when I say you should vote for Stuart Mackinnon for Parks Board.

Mackinnon is a two term Parks Board Commissioner and current Board Chair who is seeking to continue to advance his belief that Vancouver’s parks pitches and pools should be places where citizens play, relax and explore. Places that allow people and nature to exist in balance. Now sure, you could argue that every candidate for Parks Board says that. But not every candidate is:

  • Still a fan of the Canadian Football League.
  • Follows Everton in the English Premier League.
  • Spent seven years teaching at the indigenous community of Nemaska in James Bay, Quebec.
  • Fought off the Vision-ista plans to close the Bloedel Conservatory in 2009.
  • Believes that the city’s parks and community centres gave him a magical childhood that everyone else’s kid should have too.
  • Has close to three decades in teaching, two of those decades as a Vancouver High School teacher. (surely a testament to one’s patience when working with groups).
  • Grew up in a conservative household – his grandfather was an MP in the 40’s and his mother once worked for House Speaker John Fraser – and came away from it with an ability to appreciate while not necessarily agreeing with the other guy’s point of view.
  • Is not out to change the name of Stanley Park or any other park in the city. His Colonial Audit merely seeks to identify places that originally had indigenous names and then let the public decide.
  • Has, unlike many Parks Commissioners before him, no political ambitions. (former Parks Commissioners have gone on to be 4 city councilors, 3 provincial cabinet ministers, 1 city mayor and one Federal MP).
  • Wears a kilt on special occasions.

This Fall’s civic election will feature a lot of first timers (including the mayor) and possibly a lot of one termers (including the mayor). Doesn’t it make sense to retain an experienced commissioner on the Parks Board?  One who not only has the political experience, but also the experience of a true Vancouverite. I’m talking swimming outdoors at public pools like New Brighton, picnicking at beaches like Spanish Banks, and walking the sidelines of pitches like Clinton Park on dreary rainy Saturday mornings. I’m talking Stuart Mackinnon for Parks.

First Pick Handmade Returns To The Heritage Hall September 15 & 16, 2018

First Pick Fall Postcard Cover 2018First Pick Handmade returns to the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, September 15 & 16, 2018. This is a curated event showcasing 30 Canadian men’s and women’s fashion accessory designers.  First Pick Handmade will transform Heritage Hall into a 3,300-square foot pop up boutique department store. The event will feature long standing Canadian designers as well as some new additions including Anian Manufacturing with eco flannels hats and sweaters and Dogwood Denim Apparel with custom jeans for men and women.  Some designers on hand include Bianca Barr Designs, Daub and Design/Daub Active, Billy Would, LanaBetty, Quw’utsun’ Made, Frances Felt, Roberto Fioravanti and Toodlebunny. First Pick Handmade was created and curated by Janna Hurtzig  who is the founder/designer behind Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere. Hurtzig has been part of Vancouver’s handmade scene since 1988 in a variety of roles including co-organizer of Shiny, Muddy Fuzzy.  First Pick Handmade happens September 15th & 16th from11:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm each day. Commercial Street Café Hosts Meet & Greet With Candidates For Mayor of Vancouver

Commercial Street Café, 3599 Commercial Street, located in Cedar Cottage is hosting a number of meet and greet sessions this September with candidates running for Mayor of Vancouver. For those following politics, or event if you are not, this election is expected to be quite different. It is the first time in 30 years that an independent candidate could take the top job in our fair City.  We are pleased to hear that Commercial Street Café will be hosting a number of 2 hour sessions on various Saturdays and Sundays in September which will allow Vancouver residents to sit down and chat with the candidates.

This is your opportunity to get their position on issues first hand and how you think they’ll fare as Mayor.  We know housing and affordability are big topics, but there are many other issues that are near and dear to those that call Vancouver home.  We encourage you to be engaged, ask questions and make an informed decision on Election Day October 20th.  This date will be here before you know it.   We’ve set out the schedule of candidates and dates/times they’ll be on site at the Commercial Street Café. PNE – Playland – To September 3rd

This is your last weekend to catch the PNE along with the SuperDogs, mini donuts, rides and nightly summer concerts which this weekend features Burton Cummings on Friday night and Chicago on Saturday night. PNE is open 11:00 am till late all weekend.

Songs of Peace and Social Justice – The Cultch – August 31st

The Cultch plays host to an evening of music and song this Friday.  A long line up of talent will be performing original songs along with some classic with the theme of peace and social justice.  Performers include Jim Byrnes, Howard Lee Naylor and Carole Cote.  Tickets are $10 available through The Cultch.

Family Night – Grandview Park – August 31st

The Commercial Drive Business improvement Association will be hosting a Family Night this Friday in Grandview Park.  There will be lots of fun activities for the kids including balloon twisting, face painting and more. As this is the last one of the summer season, there will also be a movie showing at dusk Coco.  Fun gets underway at 5:00 pm and goes till 9:30 pm.

Grease Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – August 31st 

You can still experience a last bit of summer with some Summer Lovin’, Grease-style. The Rio Theatre is hosting a sing-a-long tonight celebrating 40 years of rockin’ and rollin’. Fun gets under way at 7:00 pm. All ages welcome.  Costumes encouraged.

History Walk With James Johnstone – 696 E. Hastings St. – September 1st

Itsumo is hosting a summer pop up show on now until September 3rd at 478 Union Street. This pop up features Japanese lifestyle items including table and kitchen ware, textiles, some vintage, incense and candles. Pop up is on 12 pm – 8 pm daily until September 3rd.

Electro Recycle – Trout Lake Farmers Market – September 1st

Electro Recycle is back at the Trout Lake Farmers Market this Saturday. So if you’ve been holding on to any old or broken small electrical appliances, bring them on down to the market with you this Saturday.

Madhatters Tea Party – Riley Park Community Garden – Sept. 1st

The folks at Riley Park Community Garden are hosting a Madhatter Tea Party Saturday, September 1st from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.  There will of course be tea, snacks and hat making.  Everyone is invited to attend. All ages welcome.

A Night Of Acoustic & Soul – Café Deux Soleils – September 2nd

Café Deux Soleils on the Drive will be hosting  a night of acoustic and soul this Sunday night. On stage you will find Ivan Hartle, Candace Coker and Matt Storm. Doors open at 7:00 pm, music at 8:00 pm. Cover is $10.

15th Annual Corn Festival – Britannia Community Centre – September 2nd

The Britannia Community Centre plays host to the 15th Annual Corn Festival this Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Latin American community is hosting their annual corn harvest fiesta.  There will be food, live music and dancing.  This is a free event for all ages.

Bayanihan Filipino Celebration – Trout Lake Community Centre – Sept. 2nd 

You are invited to come experience a taste of the Philippines this Sunday from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm at Trout Lake Community Centre. Lots of family friendly activities.  Free event, but registration is required.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Looking for live music? Leah Barley will be performing this Saturday night at Café Deux Soleils along with Kellen Saip. Music gets under way at 9:00 pm, cover is $10. Libra Room regularly hosts live music every night of the week. If it’s jazz your after, Sunday nights the Tangent Café regularly hosts live jazz music.

Tremors 2018 – Italian Cultural Centre – August 16th – 25th 

Young emerging artists perform 3 contemporary Canadian plays at the Italian Cultural Centre. They include Selfie by Christine Quintana, Tiny Replicas by Dave Deveau, and Theory by Norman Yeung. The performances are Pay What You Decide. For more information on times and tickets, visit Tremors 2018.

Family Night – Grandview Park – August 17th 

Commercial Drive BIA, Whitecaps FC and Fortis BC are hosting a free movie and family activities in Grandview Park Friday night. The movie is Peter The Rabbit.  There will also be a Kids Zone, balloon twisting and more. Event gets underway at 8:00 pm.

Italian Market – Italian Cultural Centre – August 17th 

The outdoor Italian Market is back Friday, August 17th in the parking lot in front of the Italian Cultural Centre from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This market has a distinctly Italian taste to them which includes the food and the music

Pizza Making Workshops – Beaconsfield Park – August 17th 

Running along side this Italian Market this Friday, will be Pizza Making Workshops in Beaconsfield Park located directly behind the Italian Cultural Centre.  You will have the opportunity to stretch and cook your own pizza with pizza master.  This is a hands-on event that is suitable for all ages.  Two basic pizzas are being offered, but you are invited to bring or buy extra toppings from the market to make the pizza distinctly yours.  Cost of the Pizza Making Workshop is $13 online or $15 at the event.  There will be 4 pizza workshops starting at 5:00 pm. They will continue at 5:45 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:15 pm. To reserve your spot, visit the Italian Cultural Centre online.

Friday Night Live – Hastings Racecourse – August 17th 

If you want to check out the horse races this summer, last opportunity to catch Friday Night Live Racing at Hastings Racecourse. Admission is free, races start at 7:00 pm.

PNE – Playland – August 18th – September 3rd

The Fair at the PNE opens this Saturday, August 18th.  As always, they have lots of great entertainment lined up throughout the Fair as well some great eats. This year, you can also find the Lost World of Dragons, Action Sports World Tour, Knights of Valour and of course the forever favourites, The Super Dogs.  The fun gets under way at 11:00 am Saturday and goes till late.

Mobile Market – August 18th 

Looking for fresh BC corn and other summer veggies? Fresh Roots Urban Farm is hosting a Mobile Market this Saturday at 3 locations. First up, Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, After that Kensington Community Centre from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, followed by a pop up market at Brant Villa from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

Artful Sunday – Napier Greenway – August 19th

Artful Sundays kicks off this Sunday in the Napier Greenway by the Britannia Community Centre. This outdoor visual art market features local artists, workshops, artist demonstrations, live music and more. Stop by between Noon – 5:00 pm.

The Good, The Bad The Ugly – Rio Theatre – August 19th

If the heats getting you and you want to sit back in air conditioning with a nice cold beverage, you may wish to check out the classic Clint Eastwood movie The Good, The Bad & The Ugly playing at the Rio Theatre Sunday night at 9:00 pm.

Looking to take in some comedy, East Van Improv League is at Havana Theatre Sunday night at 7:30 pm and Graham Clark’s Laugh Gallery is Monday night at Havana Theatre 9 pm. East Van Cider Fest August 22nd At The Wise Hall

In case you hadn’t heard the news, some are touting cider as the new craft beer. However you slice it, cider makers are carving out a niche for themselves in this growing industry with some tasty offerings. The upcoming East Van Cider Fest is the perfect opportunity to taste cider, mead and other spirits from all over BC. The evening will also feature tasty bites from local businesses, a silent auction and door prizes which directly support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.   Tickets for the event are $24.99 and you are asked to bring a non-perishable food event with you. Vancouver Queer Film Festival August 9 – 19, 2018

The event opens at the Vancouver Playhouse Thursday, August 9th with the Canadian premiere of Yen Tan’s 1985. The film is shot in black and white and set in Texas in the first wave of the AIDS crisis. Indie Wire calls it “a fine piece of cinematic craftsmanship … It is a haunting elegy for a generation of gay men.” Not heading downtown, no problem. There are a number of films showing at The York Theatre including Festival favourite The Coast Is Queer on August 17th at 9:00 pm. We Are the Vancouver Men’s Chorus – Friday, August 17th at 7:00 pm

“In 1981, the Vancouver Men’s Chorus and broke ground and became Canada’s first gay chorus. Over the next thirty-eight years, they’ve grown into a nationally acclaimed and internationally recognized chorus.”  Director Mark Halliday has created a documentary that takes you behind scenes of this celebrated group of men.

Indigiqueer Shorts from Turtle Island & Aotearoa – Saturday, August 18th at 7:00 pm

“Coined in 2004 by Thirza Cuthand, the term Indigiqueer is a way for queer Indigenous folks to identify themselves and their queerness. This cinematic collection showcases how versatile two-spirit/Indigiqueer life is.”

Deep Inside Clint Star – Saturday, August 18th at 9:30 pm

You are invited to a FREE screening of Deep Inside Clint Star which documents the travels of filmmaker Clint Alberta across Canada. This film features candid conversations with Indigenous youth and those often marginalized. It is powerful production that gives voice to people that often aren’t heard.
