New In Town – Mocktails On Commercial Drive

We popped into the newly opened Mocktails on Commercial Drive this weekend.  If you want some alcohol free refreshments for yourself, or to serve your guests, this is the place to be.   This boutique style shop, created by Angela Hansen, features a wide variety of alcohol free offerings including wine, spirits and beer.  You can also expect to find a great variety of non-alcoholic mocktails including bellinis, margaritas, whiskey cola, gin and tonic. They do offer tastings on select products in store which was well underway when we stopped in Saturday afternoon.  Mocktails is located at 1250 Commercial Drive across the street from Grandview Park. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 am into the evening most days. Next time you are on The Drive, pop in and check out all the refreshments that we are sure will make for great sipping on the patio and beach this summer.

Fluevog Shoes Hosts A Virtual Spring Shopping Party April 29th

Tasting Class: Dessert Wine At River District Vancouver November 14 – POSTPONED

ClusterGrapesIf you have a sweet tooth and love wine, you may wish to check out this Tasting Class happening Thursday, November 14th at the Everything Wine store in River District. Dessert wines are definitely something you see and taste more in the winter months and Everything Wine has you covered with respect to a selection. You are invited to come learn how dessert wine is made and the different styles that are made.  After an introduction to the types of dessert wines, you will, of course, get to taste some of the best in the world.   The tasting class gets under way at 6:30 pm and will run till 8:00 pm.  Tickets are $35 and available for purchase online at Everything Wine.

Les Amis du Fromage Announces Wine & Cheese Tastings Coming This Fall

If you love wine and cheese, you will want to to check out some of tastings that les amis du Fromage has coming this Fall to their East Van location (843 East Hastings Street). If are enjoying Summer and thinking Fall is a long ways off, well these courses are not really that far off .  We’ve set out the two tastings coming up:

Blue Mountain Cheese Tasting-October 21, 2019

Blue Mountain Vineyards and Cellars is located in Okanagan Falls and is a great winery to visit with some beautiful wines.  But you don’t have to travel to the Okanagan to taste some of their wines, you can just make your way to les amis du fromage  on October 21st. Tasting kicks off at 6:30. Tickets are $80. To purchase tickets, visit les amis du Fromage.

Little Farm Winery – November 4, 2019

The Little Farm Winery is based in Cawston, BC and is a small producer of single vineyard Chardonnay. Tasting kicks off at 6:30 pm on November 4th. Tickets again are $80. If you don’t already know les amis du FROMAGE, has been voted “Best Cheese Shop” by readers of The Georgia Straight and The Courier repeatedly.  They have another location in Kitsilano, but the tasting events are being held at the East Van location. Tickets for these tastings are available online. Although these classes seems a little ways off into the future, these classes do sell out quickly. If interested, we suggest you reserve your spot(s). Refunds aren’t given, but you can transfer your spot to someone else.

The Wonders Of Wine From Eastern Europe May 15th At Everything Wine Vancouver

Many of us know wines from some of the well known wine making regions, France, California, Australia and our own Okanagan Valley.  Have you tried wines from Eastern Europe?  On Wednesday, May 15th Mark Konstantinov will take you on a tour of wines from a sampling of regions such as Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Maldova, Georgia and Hungary. These areas are rich with history, which Mark will touch on during the workshop. You will also have the opportunity to try a number of wines from these regions, we suspect ones you’ve likely never been exposed to.  The event takes place at the Everything Wine store located in River District in SE Vancouver. This is a beautiful store with an amazing selection with a great space for their tasting classes.  Cost of the workshop is $25.00. Class runs 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Intro To Wine Tasting At Everything Wine June 28, 2018

IntroToWineTastingHave you checked out the still relatively new Everything Wine store in SE Vancouver?  If you haven’t, you are missing out.  Everyone we’ve introduced the store to gets excited.  It’s unique in that, unlike its other stores, this Everything Wine location carries more than wine.  It’s quite a large store that carries beer, wine and spirits and yes, has a cooler section for those hot days. They also have a selection of rotating wines at their Tasting Bar which is open every day from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. All the staff we’ve encountered are very knowledgeable which leads us to their upcoming Intro To Wine Tasting happening this Thursday, June 28th.  We recently attended a Sparkling Wine Workshop taught by Kris Pazma.  We have to say it was fun, educational and delish.  Kris is hosting another class this Thursday at the Vancouver location from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  In this workshop Intro to Wine Tasting, Kris will help you how to describe the aromas of the grapes you like so when you go into a liquor store to buy wine, you will leave with something you’ll definitely like. This fall they will be again be sharing some of their vast knowledge of cheese and offering some great classes in store including:

Wine and Cheese 101 – September 14th 6:30 – 8:30 pm $60

One of the owners Allison Spurrell will provide you with a roadmap for matching various cheese types and the wines that best suit them. Allison will introduce cheese basics, including milk types, textures, flavours, how to care for and serve fine cheeses. You will learn how best to pair wine with cheese. And yes, of course, there will be samples so you can discover what is perfect for you.

Vive la France – October 26th 6:30 – 8:30 pm $65

Allison will take you on a tour of taste with a selection of French cheeses and the many regions they come from. This tasting we hear will will feature some of the best France has to offer and will include wines from the Alsace, Loire valley and Bordeaux.

Garagiste North – The Small Guys Wine Festival April 17th At The Wise Hall

There’s a great little wine festival coming to the Wise Hall on April 17th called Garagiste North (pronounced gar-ah-jeest).   The garagiste originates from a group of winemakers in the Bordeaux region of France, that started producing “vins de garage” or “garage wine”.  Let’s be clear, these are NOT home-made wines, though some of the wineries may in fact use their kitchen tables as offices.  They are renegade small-lot winemakers who may sometimes work in their garage, but refused to follow industry laws and protocol.  Synonyms: Rebels, pioneers, renegades who are driven by their passion.   In 2014, two women started this wine festival to feature small wine producers, by definition those that make less than 2,000 cases per year. There will be 25 hard to find artisan winemakers on hand along with Peruvian food by Chicha Restaurant and music by the Chicken Like Birds. The event runs from 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm for the general public with an industry only event prior to that. Tickets are $49.00 and available via Eventbrite.  Pssst and in case you hadn’t heard the London Financial Times named this festival one of the top five new festivals in the world.  To which we say, see you there!  Cheers.

Long Table Outdoor Dinner At The Italian Cultural Centre August 26

LongTablePhotosA few years ago, I spent a month travelling around Italy. One of the best meals I had was a long table dinner in a working vineyard in Tuscany. It was a long ornate table set with wine and vin santo (dessert wine) made on site. It was truly one of the most amazing meals I’ve ever had and set in one of the most beautiful places I’ve travelled. The added bonus was meeting and getting to know people from all over the world and hearing about their travels.  Well the Italian Cultural Centre is bringing a bit of that Italian feel of the outdoor long table dinner to East Vancouver. They are hosting a long table dinner which will showcase local, organic and sustainable produce and cuisine. The long table dinner will take place Wednesday, August 26th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. This event is a collaboration with Slow Food Vancouver and is being billed as an “Urban Farm to Table”. You are invited on a food journey through Vancouver’s urban farms and learn about their sustainability. Tickets are available online or by calling Veronica at the Italian Cultural Centre between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at 604.430.3337. We look forward to seeing you. This is one event we won’t be missing.

Sunday School Wine Education Is Back At Vancouver Urban Winery

Starting this Sunday, January 26th, Vancouver Urban Winery’s Sunday School is back with some wine education classes.  This weekend’s class is “The Price is Wrong”.   They will help answer what price has got to do with it when choosing wines.  The hosts will take you through a series of blind tastings of both inexpensive as well as some more expensive wines. To keep things fair, the wines will be from the same grape and the same country, just a different price tag.   You decide what you like best, as in the end, it all comes down to taste and what you like.  Classes run from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, doors open at 6:00 pm and you are invited to stay post class for a mix & mingle from 9:00 – 10:00 pm. Tickets are $40 and available from Vancouver Urban Winery, 55 Dunlevy Avenue. If you can’t make this week’s class, upcoming classes include:
