Foto Friday – Robert Pacey Shares His Fav Pics Of East Van

11 Mar

Three CrowsFor this week’s Foto Friday, we asked Robert Pacey who lives and works in East Van, to share some of this favourite photos. We’ve had an eye on Robert’s photos for a while. You may have seen Luna On Chairs which features photos of his dog in a variety of poses on yes, chairs. Last year we came across a photo we shared on our Instagram account that Robert captured of a coyote in the cemetery (pictured below).  We loved that pic.  As it turns out, so did NBC Nightly News which used his photo with his permission. Robert loves capturing photos on walks with his lovely wife, Diane, and dog, Luna. He is self taught and owns no camera. All his photos have been taken on an iPhone 6 which Robert says allows him to be involved in capturing the “moment”.  We hope you enjoy Robert’s photos as much as we do. If you wish to see more of Robert’s photos, we invite you to check out his website at RobertPacey.com or his Instagram account. If you prefer Twitter, you can find him there as well. Happy Friday.

The Uncommon Café Hosts More Delish Cooking Classes This March

8 Mar

ProvinceInspiredMenuThe Uncommon Café, 477 Powell Street, is hosting more delicious cooking classes to help you sharpen those culinary skills.   Valentine Kitamura owner of Tartine Maple will again be leading the upcoming classes.  Valentine was born and raised in France and is a chef that has worked in hotels in Paris, Singapore, New Orleans and Toronto.  She now works with The Uncommon Café, a commissary and café, located just across the street from Oppenheimer Park.  The Uncommon Café and Valentine have recently started offering a series of cooking classes  and the next ones lined up sound pretty delish. They include:

Cooking Class & Dinner: Provence Inspired Menu (March 16)

The items you will learn to make and have the pleasure of enjoying that evening include:

“Croustillants de Chèvre”: crispy triangle pastries filled with goat cheese.

“Bouillabaisse” The best fish and shellfish stew you can have.

“Poire Pochée” Poached pears in a seasonal spiced syrup.

Note this class was added after the same class scheduled for March 9th sold out. Cooking class and dinner is $70 and tickets are available via Eventbrite. Early booking gets your $10 off.

Kitchen Skills Series – Don’t Fear The Fish (March 23)

The items you will learn to make and have the pleasure of making and enjoying include:

Mussels in White Wine and Cream Sauce

Herb-Crusted Salmon

Pan Fried Cod with Sauce Beurre Blanc

The aim of this class is to demystify the fear of cooking fish. As it is easy to overcook, Valentine will teach you what you need to know.  Classes do start out with a glass of wine and we are told they won’t let you leave without offering you something sweet to finish your night off with.  Note, this class is a demonstration Don'tFearFishclass and although not full portions, they promise that you won’t leave hungry. Again, the cost of this cooking class is $70 with $10 off for those that register early.  Registration is available via Eventbrite.  Bon appetit!

Neighbourhood Small Grant & Greenest City Grants Now Available

7 Mar

NeighbourhoodSmallGrant2015Would you like to make your community a better place? If yes, consider applying for a Neighbourhood Small Grant. If you have not heard about this program, it is worth looking into. Speaking from experience this program is a great way to get to know your neighbours and build community. You can apply for grants of up to $500 for projects in your community. The aim of the program, which is funded by the Vancouver Foundation, is to connect and engage people within the community in which they live. Neighbours can get together and make an application for a variety of events. Some examples of past events include neighbourhood block parties, clean up campaigns, ethnic cooking classes, emergency preparedness plans, community gardens and an outdoor movie night. This is not for adults only, kids are welcome to get into the act.  The ideas are only limited by your imagination. Once your application is submitted, it is reviewed by a Resident Advisory Committee made up of residents in your neighbourhood. Applicants are advised in late May/early June if they receive funding and are usually asked to have their projects completed by November 30th. A Neighbourhood Small Grant is available to anyone in one of the following areas set out below. Foto Friday – A Walk Along East Hastings-Hastings Sunrise

4 Mar

HSMamaMiaLast weekend we did a wander on East Hastings before the rains came and meandered about with of course a stop in some favourite spots like East Village Bakery. We did try and make a stop at Odd Society Spirits, which was our secret spot for a drink, but alas now that it’s been featured in the Westender’s Best of for 2016, it was a bit busy. Anyhow, we did learn there is a new business on the strip. For those that love pie, take note Sweet & Savoury Pie Co. opened their doors this week at 2261 East Hastings Street. We will be back to check out this new spot. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the photos from our day of wandering around this area.HSDaytonMW
