We love finding the unique, different and creative things people are doing in and around East Vancouver. This brings us to our latest find. We’d like to introduce you to a new business brought to you by the one and only Deanna Knight. Some of you may know her as the gypsy-jazz chanteuse of the Hot Club of Mars for the last 15 years. They have been a regular staple in various live music venues on Commercial Drive. In her newest incarnation, Deanna has created a wonderful new service for new parents called Lullaby Stork. It is a musical messenger service in which Deanna arrives as Lullaby Stork in full costume and delivers a blessing in song and poetry to new parents. Your gift also comes with a Wee Blessing Bundle delivered to the new parents which contains an assortment of Canadian eco crafted gift items. Some of the items include cookies by Cookiella, Chewelery by Stardust Generation, coconut oil soap by Kootenay Soap Co., bamboo wash cloths, bibs and blankets. The base price for the Lullaby Stork to appear is $150, a little more than the Tooth Fairy, but what an amazing memory and experience for those new tired parents just finding their way with their bundle(s) of joy. To order your Lullaby Stork, you can contact Deanna directly at 604.362.1280.

All Hell Is Breaking Loose At The Cultch November 8-12
7 Nov
Now that we have your attention, we think more than the title of this show will get your attention. All Hell is Breaking Loose features four male dancers who plan to deconstruct the typical North American stereotypes of men. That being, the t-shirt wearing, beer swilling baseball crazed with the occasional violent outburst. Then add to that the confusion of some men and oh, the mood swings not just reserved for women. The show choreographed by Frederick Gravel explores masculinity through dance and music. The show kicks off Tuesday, November 8th at the Historic Theatre in The Cultch and runs to November 12th. Tickets start at $20 and are available online via The Cultch. Please note, this show does contain male nudity.
What people are saying about All Hell Breaking Loose:
“An explosive exploration of masculinity that is half dance, one quarter performance art, and one quarter rock show”
The Ottawa Citizen
“A show that exacerbates the beauty of the complaint as the cry, howl desperate and beautiful from the injured animal.”

Rescue Me: Cookie Is Looking For Their Forever Homes
2 Nov
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a couple of animals who’ve been patiently waiting for their forever homes. First off, meet Gerry who is a fun young excitable dog with lots of energy. Thus, he does require an active and patient guardian. Gerry is a white and tan Pit Bull Terrier who is almost 2 years old. He originally came into the Prince George SPCA as a stray and was then later surrendered by his guardian. Gerry is a very affectionate dog and will shower you with kisses and is a little over eager at times Some formal obedience classes will help him with his manners and thrive in the right environment. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA think Gerry is best suited to an adult only home. And if you love snuggling and swimming, you are a great match. These are two of Gerry’s favourite things to do. If you think you could give this bouncy boy a forever home the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. You can find Gerry at 1205 East 7th Avenue or by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. UPDATE: Gerry has been adopted! 🙂
Next up, we’d like to introduce you to Cookie. Cookie is a beautiful sassy cat. She is a black cat that’s 8 years young that requires a cat savvy home, preferably the only one. Cookie we hear has an adorable chirp and loves to roll on her special rug and show off her lovely locks. She enjoys the co
mpany of people she knows, but does have a lower petting tolerance than some other cats. So a cat savvy guardian that knows when she needs her alone time is best. Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she would be happiest in a quiet adult-only home. If you think you could give this lovely girl a forever home the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. Again, you can find them and Cookie at 1205 East 7th Avenue or by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. We are, as always, grateful if you share this information and help Gerry and Cookie find their forever homes.
Miss Shakespeare Will Be At The Firehall Arts Centre November 5-26
1 Nov
The Firehall Arts Centre along with Musical TheatreWorks bring you Miss Shakespeare starting November 5th. Miss Shakespeare is a story inspired by the Bard’s daughter, whose own creative aspirations come alive as she leads a group of women in something secret, subversive and illegal. As it turns out, it’s staging of a play, but it’s the 1600’s and women are banned from the stage. Behind the dingy walls of The Cage Tavern, six women explore the seductive power of the theatre. With a musical score that is influenced by underground European Cabaret. The women embrace their creativity, their voice and their freedom. Unfortunately, the law is not on their side, and if these artists are to truly have a voice, they must find the courage to get beyond the walls and in front of an audience. The book and lyrics are written by local talent, Tracey Power, with music co-written by Steve Charles. Miss Shakespeare runs from November 5-26 at the Firehall Arts Centre. Tickets are available online from $23.
What people are saying about Miss Shakespeare:
“With humour and heart, Miss Shakespeare imagines an underground
world of women who broke the rules, first quietly and then brazenly, changing the landscape forever”
Vancouver Sun
“This is smart, funny stuff!”
Jo Ledingham
“Things are looking up for Canada’s contribution to the musical theatre genre”
Vancouver Presents!
