Story Story Lie Fool For Love At The Rio Theatre February 13th

sslfoolforloveStory Story Lie is back at The Rio Theatre February 13th with A Fool For Love.  Story Story Lie is an interactive show where some of Vancouver’s best entertainers share intimate, funny and often embarrassing stories about themselves. One of them is lying and telling you a tall tale. But which one?  The audience gets to take part in the interrogation to reveal who the liar is. And the first audience member to guess the liar, wins the grand prize as well as bragging rights. The upcoming show on February 13th is a Valentine’s Day Special featuring love stories from the funny to the darn right foolish.  Of course, one of the contestants is telling a lie. Spot the liar right and you could win some lavish lingerie from Your Open Closet. The line up of storytellers include:

East Van Entrepreneurs Launch Vintage & Branded Clothing Line – Mister, We Are The Weirdos

Not only is it sustainable, many of the items you will find are of better quality than some of the flimsy and disposable pieces produced these days. There are some very cool items available to purchase if you know where to look.  So we wish to point you in the direction of one spot that’s come to our attention. We introduce you to two enterprising young ladies who recently launched a new vintage and branded line of clothing Mister, We Are The Weirdos.

Mister, We Are The Weirdos is the brainchild of Niki Maretta and Kat McPhee, Niki originally hails from Toronto and is a published writer, professional server of alcoholic beverages and more recently a trained yoga teacher.  Kat McPhee is a portrait artist with an eclectic sense of style and she owns it. When Kat is not working in her studio, you will find her doing circles around the ice in her Ringette squad.  Kat and Niki’s love of fashion and pre-owned clothing, of the eclectic variety and cocktails, sparked the idea of Mister, We Are The Weirdos.

The name is a play on an iconic line from the film The Craft. In the film, four outcast teenage girls pursue withcraft and through the experiences create a unique bond, much like Niki and Kat have working together at a downtown pub. They bonded not on their similarities, but on their differences and oddities. They feel they are weird magnificent misfits, a title they were proud to wear.

Niki and Kat are devoted fans of the 90’s grunge scene and offer a selection of secondhand clothing with unique pieces that represent the quirkiness they find inspiring. What we love most about this brand is what it represents. Mister, We Are The Weirdos, makes the statement that being different and being yourself is what makes each person beautiful. This is a spontaneous theatrical celebration that is part performance, part improv that takes place in the back of a convenience store that Mrs. Krishnan owns.  An energetic wannabe DJ and boarder hosts a party in the back room and you get to see first hand how it unfolds. There’s lights, music, dance and daal. This is a fun production which will be sure to have you laughing.  Tickets are available online at The Cultch.

Movie ‘The Shining’ – Rio Theatre – January 27th

Jack is back in the classic movie The Shining showing this Sunday evening at the Rio Theatre. This is Jack Nicholson in what we think one of his best roles. Movie kicks off at 8:00 pm. Pick up advance tickets at the Rio Theatre.

Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews Power Ballad on Now Until January 26th At The Cultch

powerballadPerformed for the first time in Canada, Power Ballad is a shocking and explosive work that explores gendered narratives and the hidden ideologies in the language we use. Created and performed by Julia Croft, this one woman show all the way from New Zealand is loud and disturbing. But that’s the whole point – it’s a live art exhibit of feminist rage that seeks to deconstruct sexist linguistics and find a new articulation of femaleness.

This 50-minute show is not for everybody, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in going to read up on it beforehand so as not to be utterly confused. Nevertheless, Croft bravely confronts seemingly immovable patriarchal structures in this rallying production which she states “is about finding the cracks where resistance can begin”.

Their signature on this new tale is that the production is an all female cast.  The story is set in a mesmerizing theatrical world with a deadly serious and at the same time sublimely ridiculous story line. It features soldiers in love and women confined by tradition. Mixed Media Workshop – Heart Art – February 10th At Studio 580

loveartLocal artist, Tana Lynn, is hosting a mixed media workshop on Sunday, February 10th. The aim of this workshop is for you to create a personal gift of art for your loved one.  Something personal, made with heart is the way Valentine’s Day should be.   In this workshop, Tana Lynn, will lead you through a project that the whole class makes together, thus it will be the same piece. After that, you will be free to create your own unique art piece. Thus, you will be leaving with not 1, but 2 pieces of art.  No experience is necessary for this workshop and all supplies will be included. Cost is $85.00 and registration is available through Eventbrite. Event takes place at Studio 580 at 580 Clark Drive.

The Comic Strippers At The York Theatre January 26, 2019

You are invited to a very different kind of show at the York Theatre on Saturday, January 26th.  A group of male improvisational comedians will perform a male stripper routine and improv sketches while at the same time singing, dancing, gyrating and laughing it up with the crowd.  This show is a semi-undressed and completely unscripted production. The Comic Strippers take off their shirts and take on your suggestions to create a whole new genre of comedy.  We expect this to be a fun filled night.  Tickets are $39 and available online through The Cultch. Note, this show is for a 19+ audience.

Instead this is billed as a wildly subversive and darkly funny take on family drama.  Production takes place at Havana Theatre Friday night and Saturday there’s a matinee and evening show. The tour features a selection of handpicked Italian owned and operated businesses. Craft beer is first on the menu with a visit to the award winning Luppolo Brewing Co. where it’s all about the beer. The next course ventures into historic and vibrant “Little Italy” on Commercial Drive to the deli legend at La Grotto del Formaggio. The main course features a masterfully handmade meal at the renowned Marcello’s Ristorante and Pizzeria. Last up, they have a sweet surprise for you at the end of the evening.

During Dine Out Vancouver guests can choose between multiple dates between January 18th and February 2nd for the Italian Brewery and Culinary Tour.  The added bonus is no driving, just sit back and enjoy the experience.  Vancouver Brewery Tours provides full transportation aboard their bus including pick up and drop off at Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver.
