This There – The Cultch July 27th & 28th

A production asking the big question ‘what does it mean to live’? The meaning will vary from one person to the next, but this show delves into the lives of Alison and Maddie who are at crossroads in life and rethinking their chosen demanding professions. Tickets are $30 or $20 for artists, low income and students.  To purchase tickets, visit The Cultch.

Fraser River Walk – Dogwood Brewing – July 27th

You are invited to join the Sunset Artists in Communities Project ‘wayfinding/wandering’ for an evening walk to explore the Fraser River along the southern border.  Meeting spot is Dogwood Brewing at 7:00 pm. You are, of course, welcome to stop by early for a pre-walk pint from 6:00 pm onwards.

The last evening for Playland Nights happens this Friday for the 19+ crowd.  There will be beverages, alcoholic and non, midway games, rides, DJs spinning tunes with a definite party theme. There is also a burlesque show and the opportunity to test your lumber Jack/Jill skills with axe-throwing which we understand there’s an extra charge to participate in.  Tickets are $31 in advance or $34 at the gate.

Fundraiser: Families Together! – Wise Hall – July 29th

This Sunday, a group of local musicians including Professor Banjo, Ginalina Music and Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz will be hosting a fundraiser Families Together! The event is to help raise funds to support aid organizations helping family reunification at the US/Mexico border.   This issue is far away in distance, but not in the hearts and minds of many.  The event is a family oriented event, so along side the music, there will be a family craft centre hosted by The Learnary. Doors open at 1:30 pm and musical performances happen between 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Suggested donation is $10 – $50, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Breakfast & Blooms – Olive & Wild – July 29th

Il Fioraio Florist invites you to a floral workshop this Sunday at a great space on Main Street, Olive & Wild.  In this workshop you learn some basics of flower arranging along with some great tips.  Mimosa and light breakfast included.  You will leave with a beautiful centerpiece and the opportunity to shop at Olive & Wild after the workshop at a discount.  Cost of the workshop is $69. Textile Sale – Our Social Fabric – July 29th

Our Social Fabric is hosting another textile sale and they are over loaded with zippers, so will be giving some away for free.  If you need sewing supplies, DO check this spot out. They take new fabrics no longer needed to keep them from heading to the landfill. Prices are very reasonable. Sale happens this Sunday, July 29th from 10 am – 1 pm. at 1275 Venables Street at Clark in the Russell/Hendrix Building, 2nd floor, Unit #270.

If you are a night owl, The Rio Theatre is showing a classic movie, Invasion of The Body Snatchers at 11:30 pm Friday night.   If you love the cats and burlesque, there’s a burlesque inspired FUNdraiser happening at The Rio Theatre Saturday night. Greek SummerFest – Boundary & 29th Ave. Until July 15th

Great food, live entertainment and dancing continues this weekend and then it’s done for another year.  The Greek Summerfest is happening at Boundary and 29th Avenue. Lots of great talent taking the stage this weekend including Greek sensation Yanni Sahamis and Grupo Asi Somos performing Venezuelan Music.  This is an all ages event and admission is free. Movie In The Park – Collingwood Park – July 13th

Collingwood Community Policing is hosting a free movie in the park event Friday, July 13th. Festivities get underway at 7:00 pm.  Movie name not announced, but we expect it to be family friendly.

Eastside Culture Crawl’s 3rd Annual Art, Bike, Beer Crawl– July 14th

This is a fundraiser for the Eastside Culture Crawl Society which does a great job of featuring  East Van artists. This event takes you to 4 breweries whether you wish to cycle or walk, your call.  Last stop is Strange Fellows Brewing which will be serving light bite as well.  To get your ticket, visit Eventbrite.

Miqayel Voskanyan & Friends – The Cultch – July 14th 

Miqayel Voskanyan and Friends will be performing at The Cultch this Saturday. This is an ethno-jazz and folk band based in Yerevan, Armenia. They have introduced jazz to the tar (a folk instrument used across the Caucasus and Iran), which we’ve learnt makes them stand out with a fresh, modern sound in world music.  This is a new genre of music that fuses old and new.  Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and available at The Cultch.

RecycleFest – Trout Lake – July 14th 

You are invited to stop by RecycleFest this Saturday at Trout Lake from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with your unwanted or broken small appliances and power tools. While there, enjoy free food, music, games and prizes and learn a little about recycling.

Weiner Dog Races – Hastings Racecourse – July 14th & 15th

Hastings Racecourse presents their Dog Days of Summer event, the very popular Weiner Dog Races.  Along with the races, there will be food trucks, craft beer and live music and we hope some shade and cooling mats for the hot dogs. Event happens both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. First race each day is at 1:50 pm.

Summer Series At Grandview Park – July 15th

The Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting a free family event at Grandview Park (Commercial Drive at Charles Street). You are invited to stop by between 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm for Zumba on the main stage, face painting, balloon twisting and more.

Vancouver’s Greek Summerfest – Boundary & 29th Ave – July 5-15

Great food, live entertainment and dancing for 11 days at this summer festival. The Greek Summerfest is back at Boundary and 29th Avenue. Les amis du fromage is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop this Saturday, July 7th. Ritchie’s Bakery will be on site at their East Van location at 843 East Hastings Street from Noon – 5:00 pm this Saturday or until they sell out. Ritchie’s Bakery specializes in artisanal breads and pastries.

Compost Workshop – Riley Park Community Garden – July 7th

You are invited to stop by and learn about composting by Master Composter Angela Hoy this Saturday at Riley Park Community Garden.  They will be building new compost bins for the season.  Workshop happens from 1:00 – 2:00 pm in Riley Park Community Garden at 30th & Ontario Street.

Sweet Peanut Sample Sale – Little Mountain Shop – July 7th & 8th

Mini Car Free Day – Commercial Street Village – July 8th

The local businesses that comprise the 3400 – 3500 block Commercial Street are hosting a Mini Car Free Day this Sunday from Noon to 4:30 pm. There will be chainsaw carving,  live music, kids t-shirt giveaway, giant Genga game, street art, rummage sale, chocolate tasting, bike repair as well as an electric bike demo and a whole lot more.

Car Free Day – Commercial Drive – July 8th

Vancouver’s original Car Free Day kicks off at Noon this Sunday and will run for 15 blocks along Commercial Drive.  There will be live entertainment, local artisans and  activities for all ages and of course great food.  If you are travelling by bike and wish to store it while you wander, BEST Bike Valet will be on hand. Event runs till 7:00 pm.

Pre-Launch Narcoleap – Rio Theatre – July 9th

You are invited to an exclusive pre-launch screening of NarcoLeap at the Rio Theatre Monday, July 9th.  They will be screening all 8 episodes of this Sci-Fi Thriller Web Series. Doors open at 6:00 pm as does the bar. Screening gets under way at 7:00 pm. It’s free, but of course the bar Is not.  Q & A follows the screening.

Street Photography Exhibit – Meet Me At The Lamp(p)ost  Until July 10th

Massy Books located at 229 East Georgia Street in Chinatown has a sweet gallery upstairs. It’s currently hosting two self-taught lens based artists. They are Irish-born, Canadian residents Laura Noonan and Tara Mary Paget, through place-specific street photography, Meet me at the Lamp(p)ost. The exhibit promotes contentment in self and place. Laura and Tara founded Meet me at the Lamp(p)ost in 2016. You can view their exhibit until July 10, 2018 during regular hours, being 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Wednesday and 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Thursday to Sunday.

East Van Crusher – Maritime Labour Centre – May 25th

Vancouver Craft Beer Week kicks off with the East Van Crusher at the Maritime Labour Centre Friday, May 25th.  This action packed event features a wide array of canned beer and semi-famous local personality, Grant Lawrence, who will be opening the 10 day event.  To keep everyone entertained during the evening, there will be live music by Alex Maher and JD Hebegebe.  Tickets are $25 which includes admission and 2 beers. ROVE: Mount Pleasant Art Walk – May 26th

Cedar Cottage Community Garden Spring Fling – Cedar Cottage May 26th

Cedar Cottage Community Garden is hosting their 10th Annual Spring Fling this Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  This free community event will feature live music and garden tours.  Live plants and food will be available for sale.  Many local businesses will be participating in the event which also provides organizers the opportunity to raise some funds for special projects. Stop by and show your support. You can’t miss the community garden when driving along Victoria Drive, it’s where the Victoria Diversion starts before/after it changes to Commercial Drive.

Parker Art Salon – 1000 Parker Street – May 26th & 27th

Parker Art Salon now in its 4th year happens at 1000 Parker Street this Saturday and Sunday.  It is a great opportunity to see the working space and art of over 200 artists including sculptors, painters, designers, furniture builders and much more.   The building itself is pretty iconic at over 100 years old.  This is a free event open to everyone and happens from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

 

Clothing Swap – Wise Hall – May 27th

Do you have clothes that you don’t wear? Maybe they are new, maybe just gently worn, but the fit or colour wasn’t quite right.  Either way, how about revamping your wardrobe in an eco-friendly way? A Clothing Swap happens this Sunday, May 27th at the Wise Hall. Molly Misbegotten – Havana Theatre – May 15th to 19th 

An intimate coming-of-age four act drama with a naive-adolescent named Elijah Berner who succumbs to the harsh realities of attempting to recreate a moment he lost long ago. Show happens in the Havana Theatre tucked in the back of Havana Restaurant. Tickets are $15 and available through Brown Paper Tickets.

INGITE! Youth Driven Arts Festival – The Cultch – May 15th – 19th

For one week in May, The Cultch is taken over and transformed by young people. Hundreds of youth are involved in what has grown to be Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival. IGNITE! showcases music, dance, and spoken word. It will also  feature three one-act plays, a visual arts exhibit, variety shows featuring improv, drag, circus arts, and much more. Bakery Pop Up – les amis du fromge (East Van) – May 19th

Les amis du fromage’s East Van location, 843 East Hastings Street, is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop this Saturday, May 19th. This week Lakehouse Foods will be on hand from Noon to 5:00 pm or until they sell out.

Forage – Trillium North Park – May 19th

Learn to gather, use and make items from wool this Saturday, May 19th at Trillium North Park.  This is one of six free sessions featuring different local fibres. This week, learn traditional hand skills that are the foundation of many weaving techniques. Event runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. East Van artist June Hunter is hosting a Studio Sale this weekend which kicks off Friday at 2:00 pm. We are big fans of her work as nature features prominently in her work as do some East Van landmarks.  This year, June has ventured into some home décor and accessory items including cushion covers, notepads, iPad cases. With Mother’s Day soon on the horizon, we are sure you’ll be able to find a little something for mom or yourself.

Got Craft – Maritime Labour Centre – May 5th & 6th

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Got Craft is happening at the Maritime Labour Centre at 1880 Triumph Street Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The event features  local artisans including some favourites such as The Lemon Square, East Van Bees, Salty Cookie Co. and East Van Jam for something edible.  Newbies include Scouter Wear Dog Wear and Riding The Pine which has some cool designs featuring hockey sticks. Mother’s Day Crafternoon – Lupii Café – May 5th

An interesting creative workshop is happening at Lupii Café in Champlain Heights this Saturday.  Crafting With Crap is hosting an upcycling workshop in partnership with Lupii Café.  You will learn to make some crafty gifts for mom including DIY bath salts and reusable packaging. Cost is $5.83 and registration is through Eventbrite.

21st Century Flea Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – May 6th

The 21st Century Flea Market happens this Sunday, May 6th at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  If you are a collector of bargain hunter, this is the spot for you. An amazing array of items by 185 vendors.  An appraiser on site (for a small fee) for those that are looking for that.  Event runs 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 at the door.

Classical Guitar Open Mic Night – Café Deux Soleils – May 11th

East Van Artist June Hunter Hosting Studio Sale May 4 – 6, 2018

JuneHunterStudioSaleMay2018One of our favourite local artists, June Hunter, is hosting a Studio Sale this weekend. For those that don’t know her work, nature features prominently in June’s work as do some iconic East Van landmarks. She regularly features crows and other birds that come to visit her idyllic backyard which houses her working studio.  Those crows have been a source of inspiration for new designs.  Always creative, June has been busy working on new designs which include beautiful cushion covers, iPad cases, notepads, pencil cases, tote bags and more. Her working studio will again be transformed to showcase all her creative works which also include jewellery, small prints, large scale wall art, tiles and more. If you are lucky, her rescue dog Geordie will again be on hand as ambassador to greet you. June Hunter’s Studio is located at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale takes place Friday, May 4th from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm and Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

24 Hour Bike-A-Thon – 1739 Venables Street – April 13th

If you love bikes, or want to learn more about them (ie. fixing them), there’s an interesting event happening this Friday. It’s a 24 Hour Bike-A-Thon. Kickstand Community Bike Shop which will help teach people that have never built a bike (but note most of the work will be refurbishing instead of starting from scratch). They plan to build 24 bikes in 24 hours with sustenance from Moja Coffee and Renzo’s Cafe. Event starts at 6:00 pm at 1739 Venables.

Bird on Stilts Workshop – Trout Lake Community Centre – April 15th

Birds on Parade will be hosting a free workshop at Trout Lake Community Centre this Sunday, April 15th.  Once the stilts are completed, you will be invited to participate in upcoming parades around the City. For more information, visit Birds On Parade.

The 2nd Annual East Van Old Time Social – Russian Hall April 6th & 7th 

The Second Annual East Van Old Time Social is a weekend event dedicated to old-time string band music, and up-beat, beginner friendly, live music square dances. You are invited to come by the Russian Hall and listen to great tunes and dance the night away. There will be beginner friendly square dances.

Feast of Fools – Strange Fellow Brewing – April 7th 

If you love BBQ and beer, you may wish to stop by Strange Fellows Brewing, 1345 Clark Drive, this Saturday, April 7th. They will be hosting Feast of Fools where they have some delish eats on hand including BBQ Brisket/BBQ Salmon sandwich, House Coleslaw, Strange Mac ‘n Cheese, and Tarte a la Biere with beer for $18. The goodness kicks off at 5:00 pm and continues till the food runs out.

BC Beer Wars: Fight Night – Croatian Cultural Centre – April 8th

If you love beer and boxing, then BC Beer Wars Fight Night might be your ticket for this Saturday.  Event kicks off at the Croatian Cultural Centre at 2:00 pm.  Of course, beer will be on hand for sale as well as samples from 15 BC breweries. For more information and tickets, visit BC Beer Wars.

The Art Of Tease: Intro To Burlesque – Your Open Closet – April 11th

Want to learn the art of tease?  The owners of Womyn’s Ware & Your Open Closet are hosting an introduction to burlesques Wednesday, April 11th. Local burlesque legend Burgundy Brix will be teaching this workshop being held at Your Open Closet. Cost is $30, tickets are available from Womyn’s Ware.  Fun kicks off 7:00 pm and goes till 8:30 pm.  Note, these ladies are all about non-judgment, so bring your sassy self and have some fun.

Coco Love Alcorn – Wise Hall – April 11th 

You are invited to a sing-a-long concert with Coco Love Alcorn and friends Wednesday, April 11th.  This is both a concert and workshop, singing along is entirely optional though.  You can just come to be enetertained.  Event happens at the Wise Hall with things kicking off at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen – Firehall Arts Centre – April 21st

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Love live jazz music? The Geoff Claridge Trio will be playing at the Tangent Café this Sunday from 6:30 pm. Rio Theatre – Old School #SaveTheRio Fundraisers – March 30th and 31st 

If you are a fan of the Rio Theatre and wish to support a great spot for independent theatre, musicians and performers, check out the telethon like fundraising events happening this weekend. First up, is An Evening With Kevin Smith. There are 2 shows 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday, March 30th. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Golden Egg Hunt – River District – April 1st

River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a golden egg hunt Sunday, April 1st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be chocolate egg hunts, balloons, cotton candy, crafts, face painting and a chocolate bunny draw.  Starbucks will be on hand serving hot chocolate and coffee. Romer’s Burgers providing frozen yogurt and mini doughnuts. This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Easter Eggstravaganza Swim – Britannia Pool – April 1st 

Britannia Pool at Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free family swim this Sunday, April 1st from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. They will also have some Easter treats on hand and games for everyone to play.

Holiday Free Skate – Britannia  Ice Rink – April 2nd

If you are looking to ice skate, Britannia Ice Rink is hosting a free family skate this Monday, April 2nd from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.
