Transform: A Cabaret Festival On Now Until October 12th

TransformDid someone say cabaret? Co-curated by Heather Redfern and Corey Payette, Transform: A Cabaret Festival is a daring new concept aimed at bringing radical and lasting change to live performance in Vancouver. While you may think of cabaret as frivolous entertainment, historically, cabaret festivals have emerged during periods of change and uncertainty as a platform for political discourse and deep conversation.

Running for the first two weeks of October, Transform pushes the boundaries of the type of theatre we’re accustomed to. The Cultch has always strived to be a platform for previously unheard voices and stories, but this show takes it a step further. Showcasing more than a dozen diverse artists throughout two hours — including song, dance, comedy, drag, circus and more — the goal is to further our collective efforts towards reconciliation and the important conversations we need to continue to have in our community.

If you’re looking for a night to unwind and be swept up in something larger than yourself, you don’t want to miss this. While you sit in the intimate space of the York Theatre, you’re taken on a journey where you find yourself laughing one minute and crying the next. The hosts seamlessly take you from pointed political comedy bits, to moving and thought provoking song and poetry, to outright riotous musical numbers.

Oktoberfest – Alpen Club – October 4

Oktoberfest celebrations kick off this Friday, October 4th at the Alpen Club. Pull out that lederhosen or dirndl or hit Value Village to make your own creation.  The evening boasts schnitzel, beer, music by the Alpen Platters, dancing, sing-a-longs a whole lot of fun. Tickets are $35.00 or $85 if you want the VIP treatment that includes a German buffet and dedicated server to assist with your drinks.

Fright Nights – Playland – This Weekend

Fright Nights is back almost nightly from October 4th to October 31st at Playland. If you love being scared out of your wits, this if for you.  Heads up, general admission for this weekend is $25 whereas later in the month it seems to go up to $45 per person.

Draw Draw Draw – Trout Lake Community Centre – October 5th

Trout Lake Community Centre is hosting Draw Draw Draw this Saturday between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome, but pre-registration is requested.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue – October 5 & 6

Eastside Flea is back this weekend at 550 Malkin Avenue Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Expect to find over 50 local vendors with handmade items along with a great vintage line up. Food trucks on hand as well as hot apple cider. Four legged friends on leash welcome.

Open House – Trout Lake Master Plan – Trout Lake Community Centre – October 5

This Saturday the Vancouver Parks Board is hosting an Open House regarding the development of the long-range master plan for John Hendry Park (Trout Lake). They are looking for your input. Stop by between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm at the Trout Lake Community Centre to have your say.

What We’re Up Against By Theresa Rebeck – Havana Theatre – October 4 & 5

There’s an interesting production this weekend with local comedian Sara Bynoe alongside Natalie Moon, Seth Ranaweera, Aaron McCallum, and Kalvin Olafson. The show invites you into a highly competitive architecture firm. There is a battle of the sexes that emerges in this dark comedy about a woman who tries to break the glass ceiling. Show happens Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $25 and available through Showpass.com.

Houseplant Swap – Templeton Park Pool – October 6

Looking to add some houseplants to your home? Maybe you have some plants that need dividing or wish to trade some for other types of plants.  This Sunday, you are welcome to stop by the Templeton Park Pool for a Houseplant Swap between 3:30 pm and 5:00 pm. The event will take place in the Activity Room, 700 Templeton Drive. Cuttings are welcome. If you wish to participate, don’t forget to bring containers to bring plants home in.

The Shipment – Firehall Arts Centre – This Weekend

SpeakEasy Theatre’s critically acclaimed production The Shipment wraps up this weekend at the Firehall Arts Centre. Korean-American playwright Jean Lee brings to the stage a modern minstrel show about black identity meant to wake the world to the ridiculous narratives in dominant media.  For tickets, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Climate Strike Day Of Action – Everywhere – September 27

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, teenager and climate activist, Greta Thunberg, has shaken the tree on the issue of climate change. We all have a stake in this issue. What we do and don’t do matters.  So this Friday, expect more voices and actions in support of the Climate Strike.  Many local businesses will be closed such as MEC, Plenty + Spare, Bandidas Taqueria, Earnest Ice Cream and LUSH in support of the Climate Strike and transit will be busy. Recommend planning ahead.

Mrkt By Make It! – Croatian Cultural Centre – September 27 – 29

The local handmade movement comes to the Croatian Cultural Centre this weekend.  Mrkt by Make It! kicks off Friday at 5:00 pm and goes till 9:00 pm.  It continues Saturday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  There will be over 100 Canadian artists and makers on hand with a wide variety of items including clothing, accessories, home décor, gourmet edibles, body care and yes, stuff for the guys.  And if that’s not enough, food trucks and a bar.  Advance admission is $2.50 or $5.00 at the door. June Hunter Fall Studio Sale – 2785 Parker Street – September 28 & 29

East Van artist and nature photographer June Hunter is hosting her Fall Studio Sale this weekend. Her backyard studio is located at 2785 Parker Street in the Hastings Sunrise area.  She’s have many beautiful creations perfect for gift giving for the nature lover, or for yourself.  There will be jewellery, tiles, prints, cushion covers, tote bags and much more.  As always, refreshments and nibbles will be available and very easy and relaxed way to do some shopping.

Rackle Monthly Storytelling Continues At Café Deux Soleils October 30th

RackleLocal and award winning storyteller, Jo Dworschak who has brought us Story Story Lie, Oh Man and Weekly Stories brings Rackle to Café Deux Soleils. First up, the name Rackle. What does it mean?  We learnt it is Scottish slang for headstrong which is fitting we would say. We’d say Jo is no wall flower.  Jo is again assembling her favourite performers to share stories on a monthly basis at Café Deux Soleils. We are quite sure the stories will inspire and entertain you.  Rackle continues October 30th.  Cost is $10. Doors open at 8:00 pm and show begins at 8:30 pm.

June Hunter Fall Studio Sale September 28 & 29, 2019

JuneHunterStudioSale2019East Van artist, June Hunter, is hosting a Fall Studio Sale Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, September 29th.  If you follow us regularly, you know we are big fans of her work.  Vancouver’s urban nature features prominently in June’s work as do some iconic East Van landmarks. If you wish to know more about the crows and other birdlife that inhabit the green space in our neck of the woods, you may wish to check out some of her blog posts. June also captures some truly amazing photos of the visitors that come to her idyllic backyard. During her Studio Sales, June transforms her working space to showcase all her creative works which include cushion covers, jewellery, small prints, large scale wall art, totes, wall decals and more. She has lots of beautiful new designs this Fall which will help you bring a touch of nature indoors.  Her rescue dog Geordie is usually on hand as ambassador to greet you. June Hunter’s Studio is located at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

World Clean Up Day – Anywhere In East Van – September 21

This Saturday is World Clean Up Day. What can you do? Anything really.  Pick up garbage on your street or in your laneway at a nearby bus stop.  Clean a storm drain of garbage/debris near your home. Pick up those cigarette butts you see under a park bench, or other garbage left behind in your local park.  Use the City’s Van Connect app to report blocked storm drains or illegally dumped items.  15 Minutes. Can you take out 15 minutes of your day on World Clean Up Day. If you did? Send us a pic or tell us about it. We’d love to know.

Free Screening ‘Plant This Movie’ – VPL Kensington Branch- September 21

If you are interested in urban farming, the VPL Kensington Branch is show a free screening of “Plant This Movie”. It’s an exploration of urban agriculture across the globe and in large US cities. First Pick Handmade YVR – Heritage Hall – September 14 + 15

This weekend you are invited to come out and support Canadian designers at First Pick Handmade happening at the Heritage Hall at Main St. and 15th Ave. Many of the designers have a focus on sustainability which is emerging in fashion and has strong roots here locally.  Check out the talent for men’s and women’s fashion. Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival – Slocan Park – September 14

The 17th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival happens this Saturday, rain or shine. The event kicks off with a Harvest Fair between 4:00 and 7:00 pm.  After this time, there will be procession through the ravine to Renfrew Park which includes beautiful lanterns on display along the route leading to a spectacular display at Renfrew Park along with music, fireworks and much more.  This is a free family friendly event.

James Johnstone Ghost History Tour – The Heatley – September 15

James Johnstone and ghost-whisperer Kati Ackermann of Vancouver Spooks Paranormal Investigators take you on a history walking tour along with an introduction to ghosts along the way.  The walk will be through Strathcona with a meeting spot at The Heatley, 696 E. Tiva Quinn Reviews My Name Is Sumiko Part Of This Year’s Fringe Festival

Sumiko-11x17 poster-VanFringeIn case you haven’t heard, the The Vancouver Fringe Festival kicked off another year on September 5th.  There’s a great line of experimental local theatre happening around town.  Our contributing writer, Tiva Quinn, went to check our My Name is Sumiko on now at What Lab, 1814 Pandora Street. Here’s what she had to say about this production:

“I came away from My Name is Sumiko feeling that I almost liked it more than I should have. Long story short, this is a promising performer whose best work is yet to come, but see her now anyway, that’s just the sort of thing the Fringe is for.

June Fukumura starts out doing a riff on Marie Kondo, with her clown character, Sumiko, calls her “role model.” Joking about whether or not things spark joy is kind of played out, and each of her bits within the riff gets repeated to the point where it’s not funny anymore. And yet, Fukumura brings so much charm, energy and over the top silliness to her performance as Sumiko that it kind of works. The memory of laughing when she tried to decide if a dildo sparks joy the first time kind of carries you through with good enough humour when she does it the 7th time.

All in all, Fukumura riffs on 3 topics, and the finale, a mashup of Indiana Jones, Titanic, Austin Powers and online dating woes was by far the best.

The promo material that talks about “dicing up stereotypes” might make you think this is going to be a woke, intellectual sort of clowning, but it’s mostly just silly and there’s nothing wrong with that. Turn off your brain, go and enjoy.”

Vancouver Fringe Festival – Various Venues – September 5th to 15th

The Vancouver Fringe Festival has kicked off for another year with a great line up of talent. Although many of the shows are playing on Granville Island, there are many shows happening at East Van venues including Havana Theatre, The Cultch, Wise Hall, What Lab and The Firehall Arts Centre.  Last year, the Fringe featured more than 700 performances by 90 artists in just over 11 days.  For a full line up, visit Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Summer Savour Festival – River District Centre – September 7th

Wesgroup Properties is hosting their last free summer event this Saturday in the River District Town Centre.  The afternoon starts off with Yeeri the Magician followed by music by Kutapira, Gina Lina and the Katherines.  Event happens between 2:00 and 6:00 pm. Lots of family friendly activities in the walkable town centre.   We recommend popping into the Everything Wine store in the heart of the Town Centre which has a great Wine Tasting Bar with free samples.

Studio Sale – AntiPod Workshop – September 7th

A few local artists are hosting an Open Studio Sale this Saturday, AntiPod Workshop, Rachael Ashe and Michelle Sirois-Silver at 201 – 1610 Clark Drive this Saturday. Stop by between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm to check out some local talent.

Come Draw With Me Alicia Tobin – Little Mountain Gallery – September 7th

Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back in Dude Chilling Park from 10:00 am – 2 pm. Tom Green Stand Up Comedy Tour At The Rio Theatre September 17th

TomGreen2019The Rio Theatre is hosting one of Canada’s comedy pioneers Tom Green on Tuesday, September 17th. Some will know him from his MTV comedy show The Tom Green Show.  His success in comedy has landed him in numerous movies including Freddy Got Fingered, Stealing Havard, Road Trip and Charlies Angels.  He also also appeared on numerous late night talk shows and on September 17th he graces the stage of the Rio Theatre with his brand of humour which is getting rave reviews.  Advance tickets for his upcoming show are $35, or $38 at the door.
