More Great Cooking Classes This Fall At Gourmet Warehouse

Gourmet Warehouse has added more cooking classes to their Fall season which includes one for those interested in mastering the art of making cocktails. If you haven’t already experienced one of their classes, it is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with some like-minded food lovers. If you have participated, you know it’s a great way to pick up some knowledge and some great tips in the kitchen. Added bonus is after each cooking class all the participants are offered a 10% discount for purchases made the day of your class. The Flavours of Peru – October 18, 2022

You are invited to take a journey and experience the flavours of Peru with local chef Shelome Bouvette. She will be showcasing classic Peruvian comfort food with a contemporary twist. Chef Shelome has expertise from such infamous restaurants Lolita’s and CHICHA. If you’ve been to either, you know it’s going to be good. Menu for the evening will be:

• Chicha Morada – Traditional spiced purple corn drink
• Peruvian Ceviche – Classico – seasonal white fish, poached yam, Peruvian cancha corn, sweet corn, salsa criolla, aji amarillo chili, citrus broth.
Causa del Cangrejo – Peruvian aji amarillo chili, whipped & chilled potato, layered with Dungeness crab, mango, avocado, topped with cherry tomato corn salsa and poached local prawns
• Locra de Zapallo Empanadas – Corn, kale, potato, cheese and Aji Amarillo butternut squash empanadas, lime crema
• Picarones – Peruvian sweet potato donuts with spiced honey and pisco raspberry sauce

Pasta Like A Pro: Italiano Classico – October 19, 2022

Do you love fresh pasta, but think it’s too difficult to make in your own kitchen? Think again! Chef Deniz will show you how to mix, roll, shape, and cook fresh pasta. You’ll learn how to make ricotta gnudi, tortellini, and traditional egg noodles, along with simply delicious sauces to pair with each! We’ve set out the delicious menu:

Intro Into Cookie Decorating: Fall Favourites – October 23, 2022

Chef Lizzy Wong from Butter Baked Goods is back to guide you through an array of colourfully decorated seasonal cookies using classic Royal Icing Techniques on sugar cookies. You will learn about consistencies, colouring and piping techniques along with some advanced techniques to wow a few people with your new skills.   Each attendee from this class will leave with delicious cookies to take home. Here’s whats on the menu for this class:

Skate With Olympian Ice Skater Patrick Chan

If you, or anyone you know, has ever dreamed of skating with an Olympian skater, mark your calendar, your opportunity to do just that is here.   You are invited to come skate with Canada’s most decorated Olympian skater Patrick Chan. He will be be lacing up for two public skates on Saturday, September 17th at Hillcrest Rink or Saturday, October 8th at Trout Lake Rink. The events will also include a small circuit area with instructor for training as well as an off ice meet and greet.   The fee for this event is the regular fee for a public skate. Improv Against Humanity At Cafe Deux Soleils September 30th

Improv Against Humanity is back! The improv group The Fictionals will be taking the stage at Café Deux Soleils on Friday, September 30th to showcase their unique and well honed improvisational talent.   Along with lots of laughs and a fun night, there will be some epic prizes to be won including the Most Horrible Person in Vancouver. Will you be crowned?  You are invited to come check out all the great local talent. Tickets are $10 at the door – cash only. Show gets under way at 9:00 pm.

7th Annual McSpadden County Fair September 11

Although summer is winding down, there are still lots of great events to take in around East Van. The McSpadden Country Fair being one of them.  This community event now in its 7th year features fun activities for the whole family including live music, games, local vendors, food trucks and the ever popular East Van zucchini races. Last year they had 150 entries, so if you have an idea on how to make a fast zucchini, now’s your chance! If you cycle, Kickstand will be on hand doing bike tunes up by donation. As with any country fair, there will be raffles, contests and prizes.  The 7th Annual McSpadden County Fair takes place, as you might guess, in McSpadden Park which is located at 2125 Victoria Drive between 11:00 and 5:00 pm. The 24th Vancouver Improv Festival Returns To The Cultch September 13-18

The 24th Vancouver Improv Festival returns to The Cultch September 13-18, 2022. Vancouver Improv Fest is one of North America’s longest running improv festivals, and celebrate spontaneity and collaboration through the art form of improvisation. This year’s festival features acts from Halifax, London (UK), Portland, Toronto and beyond. You are invited to check out one of the many performances lined, or attend a workshop which is open to improvisors of all skill levels. Yeast Van Patio Party Brewery District August 27

Love a nice refreshing beverage on a hot summer day?  Then you may wish to head over to the Yeast Van Patio Party happening on Saturday, August 27th at Container Brewing, 1216 Franklin Street from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. 17 + breweries are participating in the event as well as distilleries and meaderies. There’s a long list of local businesses offering refreshments including Andina Brewing, Luppolo Brewing, East Van Brewing, Callister Brewing, Odd Society Spirits, Strange Fellows, Storm Brewing, Parallel 49 Brewing, Off The Rail Brewing, Powell Brewing and many more. 20th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival This September

The Still Moon Arts Society in conjunction with the Renfrew Park Community Association presents the 20th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival this September. You are invited to participate in this free festival that offers a variety of activities. The event celebrates the full moon, harvest abundance and diverse cultural traditions. This year’s theme Resurfacing pays tribute to the lost stream systems of Still Creek.  The signature events include the annual Harvest Fair, Lost Streams Parade and Streamside Lantern Installation which features live music, dance, shadow puppets and eco-arts.  Also included in the festivities are workshops, youth performances, community veggie competitions and more.

The Harvest Fair is an all ages family friendly event that takes place at Slocan Park.  You can expect music, local artists, eco-arts workshops, games, community booths and the ever popular vegetable competition.  At twilight, a lantern parade with mystical characters will lead you along the routes of the Lost Streams to Collingwood Park.

An Evening With The Acorn: Vegetables Re-Imagined – Sept. 21, 2022

Brian Luptak and Shira Blustein, award winning chefs, restauranteurs and authors, will be leading this demonstration dining event. Vegetables Re-Imagined will explore produce layering flavours and textures with impeccable plating, while showcasing vegetarian cuisine at its finest. You will learn some fresh takes on classic dishes. The menu for this upcoming class is set out below:

Cookies with Lizzy: Spooky Sugar Halloween Treats – Sept. 25, 2022

Chef Lizzy Wong from Butter Baked Goods invites you to spend a Sunday afternoon learning how to colourfully decorate seasonal cookies using classic royal icing techniques on sugar cookies. You can expect to learn about consistency, colouring, piping techniques, flooding, and as well as some advanced techniques. Added bonus, each class starts with a delicious mimosa a nibble on baked goods and fresh fruit while Lizzie guides you through the class. Each attendee from this class will leave with delicious cookies to take home and share with your loved ones and of course armed with the knowledge to make more at home just in time for Halloween.

Dumpling 101: Pinch Me I’m Dreaming – Sept. 28, 2022

Chef Deniz will be hosting this hands-on cooking class in which you learn about the perfect dough, decadent fillings and classic technique for dumplings. “Pinch Me I’m Dreaming” will also highlight regional stuffings and fillings from around the world and the variations on folds and pinches to create showstopping plates to impress any guest. Some of what you’ll learn to make is set out below:

Scottish Comedian Gary Meikle At The York Theatre August 17th

Scottish comedian Gary Meikle takes the the stage at the York Theatre Friday, August 17th.  In case you haven’t heard of him, Gary Meikle is a viral sensation and winner of the Scottish Comedy Award and will be back for a second tour in Canada. His new Surreal! show delves into life over the last 12 months. Tickets are $35 and are now available through The Cultch.

Outdoor Zumba Classes At Trout Lake Mondays Until August 15

Looking for some outdoor options for exercise this summer? If so, Trout Lake Community Centre is offering outdoor Zumba classes until August 15th.
