27 FebEast FEAST (Funding Emerging Artists through Sustainable Tactics) is a micro-funding event that supports artists living and working in the neighbourhoods of Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona. East FEAST relies on community engagement to be successful.

New In Town: Second Nature Home Eco-Friendly & Organic Products For Home
21 Feb
We would like to introduce to a great new store in East Vancouver called Second Nature Home brought to you by social entrepreneur, Elizabeth McKitrick. Second Nature Home is a retail store entirely focused on eco-friendly and organic products for the home. If you get a chance to talk with Elizabeth, you will quickly realize she is passionate about the environment and living a sustainable life.
Second Nature Home has an amazing array of items for the home including locally sourced products for the home, curated decorative arts as well as a great vintage section. What we loved was the refilling station for laundry soaps, shampoo, dish detergent, body wash and hand soap with products from local companies, Sapadilla Soap Co., Pacific Coast Soapworks and Gingko & Maple. Their products are made from natural and organic ingredients with essential oils. Elizabeth has bottled product lines available for sale, or you can bring your own containers to the shop and fill them there. The beauty of this, of course, is no plastics to recycle. The added bonus is the wonderful aromatherapy of the soap products themselves, including lavender-lime, grapefruit-bergamot, rosemary-peppermint (some unscented options available too).
Second Nature offers custom gift baskets for any occasion that can be put together with local organic products, and coming soon is an online gift registry. Oh and did we mention bicycle delivery to the local neighbourhood–a trial service will be rolled out this summer, beginning in the Trout Lake/Cedar Cottage area. When it comes to being a socially responsible company, Elizabeth not only talks the talk, she walks the walk. Second Nature Home provides valuable skills development opportunities and mentoring for immigrant women and supports community ecological activity.
Second Nature Home is located at 1827 Victoria Diversion which is the one block stretch that connects Victoria Drive and Commercial Drive located next to the Croatian Cultural Centre. Second Nature Home is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, but open Fridays until 8:00 pm and Sunday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and closed Mondays.

19 Feb
James Johnstone is back with his historical walking tours and will be kicking off his first tour this Saturday, February 21st. James will take you on a tour of one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Strathcona. The tour kicks off at 10:00 a.m. starting from 696 East Hastings at Heatley. This historical walking tour is a culmination of years of researching over 250 homes in the East End. Although you will find architecture is a theme on this tour, James will also focus on social history and how waves of immigrants established themselves in this area before moving on to other parts of the city. The tour will also touch on the impact of portside industries like BC Sugar, the prohibition and the proliferation of bootlegging as well as the City of Vancouver’s attempts to wipe out “urban blight”. Join James this Saturday and he will tell you why Vancouver’s first neighbourhood is also its most fascinating. The cost of the tour is $20 per person. If you are unable to attend this weekend’s tour, James will be repeating this tour on February 28th, March 7th, March 14th and March 21st. If you would like more information or to reserve your spot, email James directly at historywalks@gmail.com.

14 Feb
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to Hyde. Hyde is a young adult Siamese Cross that is a bundle of energy and lots of fun. The Vancouver SPCA is seeking an active guardian for this cool cat. Hyde was found in someone’s backyard shed where he had been taking up residence for a week or so. He is a very exuberant young cat and needs plenty of stimulation and activity to keep him feeling entertained. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA think he will bore easily so his new home should be spacious and his owners should be home often. This boy loves to play and is quite fine with being the life of the party. Note Hyde does crave outdoor access and his friends at the Vancouver SPCA have been working on harness training with him and he is loving it! In typical Siamese fashion Hyde is bold, chatty, hilarious, and cuddly. This boy has loads of purrsonality and would make a great kitty comedian. We are thinking possible YouTube star material here! If you think you could give this boy a forever home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. Stop by for a visit anytime. If you would like more information about Hyde, contact the Vancouver SPCA. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.

Their aim is reach their goal of 1,000,000 acts of kindness in one year’s time.
