Chocolate Challenge Returns To The Gourmet Warehouse April 27, 2017

This event pits 8 chocolatiers against each other to create something decadent with chocolate.  You have the opportunity to taste and vote who wins top prize for the best creation. In addition to chocolate, your ticket includes tastings from Earnest Ice Cream, The Preservatory, Stumptown Coffee, Tacomio, Tartine Tarts, Terra Breads, and Yorshire Tea.  Best part of all 100% of ticket sales, silent and live auction proceeds will go to the Strathcona Backpack Program, Project Chef and the Vancouver Firefighters `Snacks for Kids` Program. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased directly from Gourmet Warehouse. Event gets under way at 6:30 pm.  Come out and support this fun evening for 3 great local causes.

We recently did just that with a class led by Caren McSherry featuring holiday appetizers. Not only do you get to taste everything you make, but you leave with amazing recipes and great tips from an expert. PHO-Fabulous – Thursday, March 23rd 6:00 pm ($65)

You are invited to join Chef Thompson Tran to learn the essential techniques for making authentic Pho (PH-UH) broth.  In this cool weather, there is nothing like an aromatic bowl of Pho to warm you up.  The menu Chef Tran has lined up for this class includes:

•  GOI DU-DU VA THIT HEO THOM, Green papaya and cabbage salad prawn and pork
•  PHO BO DAC BIET, Authentic South Vietnamese Pho
•  BANH LOT, a Chestnut Jelly in Ginger Syrup

Asian Bistro – Saturday, March 25th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

Chef Cindy Low teaches you how to make casual Asian food. Best of all, easy and fast dishes including potstickers, bao (filled steamed buns), Asian sticky chicken and a fav among many we know spicy green beans finished off with mango coconut ice cream.

Chef Low will teach you how to make a classic lamb stew, an easy spinach and strawberry salad, cherry clafouti and more. Menu for this upcoming class includes:

• Tartine with saute mushrooms in a creamy tarragon sauce

• Spinach salad with fresh strawberries, toasted almonds, raspberry vinaigrette

• Lamb navarin printainere – class lamb stew with spring vegetables

• Roast potatoes with rosemary and sea salt

Anna Olson Book Signing At Gourmet Warehouse November 1st

If you love Anna Olson, you may wish to head down to Gourmet Warehouse on November 1st. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Anna Olson is a professionally trained pastry chef among many other talents. She hosts Bake With Anna Olson on the Food Network and has written a new cookbook Bake With Anna Olson which has more than 125 recipes for booked goods from her popular Food Network Canada show.  On November 1st, you will have the opportunity to obtain a signed copy of her newest cookbook and meet Anna while sipping on a glass of wine or prosecco and nibbling on some sweet treats.  Tickets for this event are $45 and include a signed copy of her new cookbook. The event takes place at Gourmet Warehouse from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Tickets are available online and are non-refundable, but if you aren’t able to make it, you can send someone in your place.

Sushi Workshop – Saturday, September 17th 11:00 am ($69) SOLD OUT

In this hands-on class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you how to make sushi.  You will learn to make vinegared sushi rice, how to mix wasabi, how to prepare a variety of fillings including seafood, vegetarian, tofu and eggs.  As well, Chef Low will teach how to make sushi rolls, cones and a variety of shapes as well as tips on how to host your own ‘do it yourself’ sushi party.  Some of the sushi you will learn to make include:

• California rolls (crab, avocado, cucumber, rolled “inside out”)
• Futomaki (thick roll with vegetables, omelet, Japanese pickled vegetables)
• Hoso maki (thin rolls, with various fillings, such as salmon, tuna, cucumber)
• Inari sushi (stuffed tofu pouches)
• Temaki (cones, with various fillings)
• Nigiri sushi (rice with a sliced topping)
• Gunkan sushi (rice wrapped with seaweed with various fillings)
• Onigiri (rice triangles)
• Miso soup with tofu

Taco Night– Saturday, September 24th 11:00 am ($65)

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you three different ways to make very tasty tacos. She will also teach you how to make homemade salsa and Mexican brownies. These really are simple the dishes to make, so for the novice wishing to learn a few skills, you won’t be disappointed.  Some of the delicious dishes you will learn to make include:

• Classic Tex-Mex tacos – crispy taco shell with ground beef, tomatoes,
cheese, lettuce, sour cream, avocado
• Chicken fajitas – marinated chicken breast with bell peppers and onions wrapped
in a wheat tortilla
• Salmon tacos with papaya salsa, soft corn tortilla
• Easiest ever homemade salsa, served with tortilla chips
• Mexican brownies

 Flavours of Vietnam – Sunday, September 25th 11:00 am ($65)

In this demonstration cooking class, Thompson Tran is going to teach you how to make classic Vietnamese dishes. He will focus on family budgets, what’s local and in season all in the pursuit of our favourite thing, delicious food  As always, you are encouraged to come hungry, you will be eating the items made in class. Thompson has chosen three Vietnamese dishes that are simple, inexpensive quick and healthy. What you will learn to make includes:

• Appetizer: “CHA GOI, NUOC MAM PHA” (Gluten free spring rolls & Nuoc Cham)
• Main: “Ca KHO TO, COM VA SU XAO TOI” (Caramelized tilapia with scented
jasmine rice and garlic chayote)
• Dessert: “CHE XOI NUOC” (Mochi dumplings in coconut ginger syrup).

 Flavours of Vietnam – Saturday, May 28th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you all about Vietnamese cuisine which she says is one of Asia’s best kept secrets.   She will focus on fresh Asian herbs and vegetables which makes for light and healthy meals. Chef Low will teach you how to make homemade chicken broth which is the base for Vietnamese pho. You will also learn to make salad rolls, shaking beef with arugula and Vietnamese coffee ice cream.   As always, you are encouraged to come hungry, you will be eating the items made in class and this is a popular one.  What you will learn to make includes:

Vietnamese salad rolls with prawns, served with a
hoi sin and peanut dipping sauce
Shaking beef with arugula, served banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) style
Chicken pho – classic Vietnamese soup with rice noodles in a homemade
chicken broth, fresh Asian herbs, bean sprouts

Cake Pops – Sunday, June 26th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

You are invited to this hands-on-class with in-house baker, Rick Gaspard.  He will demonstrate how easy it is to make Cake Pops.  You will learn all the tips on how to shape them, dip them and roll and decorate them. Cake pops are fun variation and perfect for a wedding favours, birthday treats and make a great decorative flair at wedding or baby showers. As this is a hands-on-class, you are asked to bring an apron as well as a container to bring home your freshly created cake pops.

Greek Night– Saturday, June 18th 11:00 am ($65) NEWLY ADDED

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you not only about the distinctive flavours of Greek dishes, but how truly simple the dishes are to make.  Cindy will also discuss the Mediterranean diet which is considered one of the healthiest in the world.  Some of the delicious dishes you will learn to make include:

Horiataki Salata (Greek salad) with tomatoes, cucumber, feta, olives,
green pepper, oregano and extra virgin olive oil
Prawns Saganaki – prawns baked with tomatoes and feta
Chicken Souvlaki – tender cubes of chicken breast, marinated and grilled to perfection

You will learn to make some classic dishes like briouats (filo pies), tajines (stews) and couscous. The menu for this class includes:

His class focuses on flavour and having attended a cooking class at Dirty Apron, we expect it will be rather fun as well.  The menu he has lined up for this upcoming class includes:

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

The Cultch – Live Theatre

This is a favourite spot of ours. The Cultch has an amazing array of talent that graces their stages whether drama, comedy, musical, historical, they cover all the bases. In the New Year, they have an interesting show we have our eye on called Leftovers. It features Charlie Demers, one of the stars of CBC Radio’s the Debators and best-selling author. This is a political comedy which we hear will cut through decades of BS.   Tickets are available online from $10. Note the show itself takes place at the York Theatre between  January 26 – 30, 2016.

You are invited to join instructor Rick Gaspard for this hands-on class. You can expect to learn the basic techniques required to decorate beautiful cakes for any occasion.  You will also learn the basics of filling and frosting a cake, handling a piping bag and creating beautifully piped borders. As this is a hands-on class, registration is limited to 8 participants so early registration along with an apron is recommended.

Prawn Festival – Saturday, May 9th 11:00 am ($69) SOLD OUT

Well if you love prawns, this is the class for you. This cooking class coincides with the International Prawn Festival and to celebrate Chef Cindy Low will demonstrate how to cook prawns perfectly. Some of the dishes she will be showing you include:

•Prawn and mango amuse bouche
•Prawn and lobster bisque
•Prawns with chorizo and garlic, Spanish tapas-style
•Prawns and smoked salmon pasta in a cream sauce with herbs
•Wok-fried crystal tiger prawns with snow peas and asparagus
•Dark chocolate-dipped strawberries
