If you have not experienced Fado music, you are missing out. What is Fado? Wikipedia describes it as “a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia.” We can tell you it is passionate, emotional and relatable. This month and next you have the chance to experience it firsthand. Elaine Ávila, an acclaimed Portuguese-Canadian playwright, brings her play new FADO to the stage at the Firehall Arts Centre. The production “is a tale of love and ghosts set in the back alleys and brothels of old Lisbon. Part concert, part theatre, the story of a young woman confronting her country’s Fascist past and her own identity is interwoven with the heartbreaking national music of Portugal known as Fado, which means “fate.” For tickets to this beautiful production, visit Firehall Arts Centre. Dessert wines are definitely something you see and taste more in the winter months and Everything Wine has you covered with respect to a selection. You are invited to come learn how dessert wine is made and the different styles that are made. After an introduction to the types of dessert wines, you will, of course, get to taste some of the best in the world. The tasting class gets under way at 6:30 pm and will run till 8:00 pm. The Father Comes To The Cultch November 20 – 30, 2019

Christopher Hampton translates French playwright, Florian Zeller’s, award winning play The Father. Christopher brings this highly acclaimed production to the stage at The Cultch November 20 to 30, 2019. The play is one that has taken Paris, London and New York by storm and accumulated many awards along the way. It is a deeply moving production about Andre a man in mental decline. He can’t remember where he put his watch or why there are strangers in house and asks why people keep moving his furniture. His daughter Anne tries to keep up with all the answers to Andre’s questions. This November will be the first time this work makes its way to Vancouver. An important production that many with aging parents will be able to relate to. If you missed the post that went viral on our Facebook page, the PNE is hosting a free event that has win win all over it. Bring your Halloween pumpkins (minus markings, candles and wax) to Hastings Park Sports Court on Friday, November 1st between 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Organizers will provide flameless candles to display the array of pumpkins. After the event, volunteers will take the pumpkins to local farms to be used for food as part of a food waste aversion project.
Monster Merlot – Figaro Garden Centre – November 1
If you love gardening, you are invited to stop by Figaro Garden Centre this Friday between 3:00 and 6:00 pm to talk plants, bulbs, winter preparation for your garden, whatever garden wise and enjoy a glass of Merlot.

Parade of Lost Souls – Britannia Public Library – November 2
The Parade of Lost Souls, an iconic East Van event and a personal favourite for many reasons, but one particular one is community involvement it takes to put on this production. It truly takes a village and the last few years The Dusty Flowerpot took over the festivities where the Public Dreams Society left off. Come celebrate the Day of The Dead and honour all those souls, past and present this Saturday, November 2nd. The evening starts off with a procession from the Britannia Public Library at 7:00 pm. Wear your best costume, marine life is the theme this year, but get creative. Everyone does. All ages welcome. Festivities continue (we expect) around Britannia Community Centre during the event with various performances, music and flash mobs.
Parade of Lost Souls After Party – Wise Hall – November 2
Participants of the Parade of Lost Souls Festival gather together to redefine their ideas of community engagement; to reconnect with one another and celebrate the cycles of life and death. After the parade, the Wise Hall plays host to the Parade of Lost Souls After Party. Bring your costumes, marine themed if you can and partake in an East Van’s tradition. Fun kicks off at 9:00 pm. Sara Bynoe’s Teen Angst Night Turns 19 At The Fox Cabaret November 22nd

What is Teen Angst Night you might ask? Well it’s where brave souls of all ages get up on stage and share (ie. read aloud to an audience) embarrassing stories from teenage notebooks, letters, diaries and journals. And really who does not have funny and/or embarrassing stories from that time in life when hormones and emotions are at an all time high? Do you have a great embarrassing story to share? If so, it could be YOU on stage for 19th anniversary celebration happening November 22nd at the Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street. And IF you are interested in participating, here are the requirements:
1- The work must be your own.
2- You must have written it between the ages of 10-19; and
3- You cannot be proud of the work you share. It’s best if you’re super embarrassed.
Ready to sign up? If yes, visit Sign Up. For putting yourself out there, you will get a free drink plus a ticket for a guest to accompany you.
If you prefer to come and listen to stories, best grab yourself an advance ticket which is a very reasonable $12 or you can snag a ticket at the door for $15. Local comedian and actress, Sara Bynoe, who created Teen Angst Night will be hosting the evening’s anniversary celebration.

PNE Pumpkin Promenade November 1 At Hastings Park: Food Waste Diversion Project

What do you do with your pumpkin after Halloween? There is of course composting, a very good option, but there is another option this year. The PNE is doing something very cool that reduces waste, does something positive for the environment and animals and is fun. On Friday, November 1st between 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm you are invited to bring your pumpkin(s) to a FREE PNE PUMPKIN PROMENADE at the Hastings Park Sports Court. All the pumpkins will be lit up and put on display. After the event, volunteers for Pumpkins For Pigs will round up all the pumpkins which will be delivered to local farms and made into treats for animals as part of a Food Waste Diversion Project. Tim Horton’s Kaslo will have hot chocolate and snacks on hand, but you are asked to bring your own cup.
NOTE: Pumpkins should not have black markings. If they do, you are asked to remove it with rubbing alcohol. All candles and dripped waxed must be removed prior to the event. Organizers will provide flameless candles.

All Souls Night At Mountain View Cemetery October 26 to November 1

You are invited to the 15th Annual All Souls Night happening Saturday, October 26th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street. This event is curated by artist Paula Jardine and Marina Szijarto and was created to provide opportunities for the public to commemorate their dead with a family-oriented community art event. The Celebration Hall will be open from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm for tea and personal memorial making. Artists and community members will come together to create a sanctuary for remembrance and reflection. You are encouraged to bring a lantern and candles as well as photos to create a memorial for a loved one in a gentle atmosphere. The event takes place rain or shine.
