Like The Phoenix Rising The Parade Of Lost Souls Is Back October 30th

Like the Phoenix Rising, the Parade of Lost Souls is back for 2021 and this year’s theme is aptly named The Phoenix.

If you live in East Van, you likely know about this grass-roots festival. Creative direction comes from the folks at The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. The event itself encompasses dance, art, music, installations, acting and much more.

You are invited to participate in this year’s Parade of Lost Souls on Saturday, October 30th which procession will be led by The Carnival Band who will be doing hourly processions at 7:00 pm, 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm from the Britannia Community Centre.  

Costumes are encouraged and the wilder the better.  And this year, you have an added opportunity for snagging yourself a great costume.  Friday, October 22nd and 29th from 3:30 to 6:00 pm The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret will be hosting an Open House at #141- 2050 Scotia Avenue where you will be able to purchase one of their many costumes. At the same time, if you wish to make alternations or get busy with a glue gun, you will have that opportunity. A sewing machine and craft making tools will be on hand.

For those familiar with the event, you may know there is usually a Lost Souls After Party which is tentatively going ahead this year at the Wise Hall. We invite you to stay tuned to their social media to see more details on this.

Made In The 604 At The Heritage Hall October 24th

Made In The 604 is back at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, with a Pop Up Market for the first time in almost 2 years. Sunday, October 24th the Heritage Hall is transformed again into a space that showcases handmade items produced by local makers, creatives and the small business community. The event gets under way at 11:00 am and all Covid protocols will be in place including vaccine passports and masking to keep things safe for everyone. Admission is by donation. There are not quite as many of these markets this year as in past years, but it a great opportunity to get a jump on your Christmas shopping.

Loafridge Looking For Transportation Volunteers

Loafridge, a local community group, is on the hunt for transportation volunteers that are able to commit to regularly scheduled pick ups. If you aren’t familiar with Loafridge, this is a great community organization that co-ordinates a community fridge and pantry pilot project located in Hastings Sunrise. Loafridge allows people to leave what they can and others to take what they need. They are currently in need of volunteers that can transport donations and help stock the fridge. First Pick Handmade Pop Up Market October 17 At Heritage Hall

First Pick Handmade returns to Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, on Sunday, October 17th for a 1 day Pop Up Market. First Pick Handmade is known for curating a wide range of high quality fashion forward handmade Canadian clothing, footwear, jewellery, lingerie, active wear and accessories. The event runs from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Free admission. We encourage you to stop by and support these Canadian makers.

Volunteers Needed For Community Planting Event October 24th

Local group Free The Fern is hosting a Community Planting Event on October 24th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. They are on the hunt for volunteer planters.  

For a bit of history for those unfamiliar with this group’s work, Free the Fern is an environmental stewardship group formed in 2021 that is located in South Vancouver. Their 20 members have spent over 360 volunteer hours removing 49 tons of invasive weeds from the Champlain Heights Trail. Thanks to a TD Park People Grant and donations from community members, they will now be replanting native plants along this forested trail some of which include perennial flowers, berries and ferns. 

They need volunteers to make this event a success.  Free the Fern is on the hunt for volunteers of all ages and abilities to sign up to help on October 24th. East Van’s Housewives of Hip Hop Holding Audition For New Members

Are you familiar with East Van’s Housewives of Hip Hop? If not, you should check out these super charged women who love to dance and have fun. In case you haven’t heard of them, the ‘Housewives’ have become quite the sensation on Tik Tok. For a bit of history, 6 years ago some moms were dropping their kids off at Boogaloo Academy for a dance class. The ladies decided the kids were having all the fun and they wanted in on some of that. Soon after, the owner of Boogaloo Academy, Jheric Hizon, taught them some hip hop moves which they then performed at a studio year end dance and that’s where the journey took off.  In 2018, they entered some dance competitions in the “adult street dance” category and next thing you know, the ladies won 2 silver medals and invites to perform at the WestCoast Women’s Show and the Victoria Women’s Show.

Now YOU have the opportunity to get in on all the fun! The Housewives of Hip Hop are holding an audition to add new members to their team. If you love to dance, have fun and have an affinity for old school hip hop and everything in between, you are almost certainly in, or well we’d say you have a good running start. To audition, mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 19th at Boogaloo Academy, #101 – 8410 Ontario Street. Auditions will be held in person between 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm. The Housewives have some requirements for their members which we’ve set out below. Aspiring Housewives, please give a read.

All “House” Wives of Hip Hop must:

  1. Prefer dancing to house work.  
  2. Be open to proudly wear spandex and leg warmers.  
  3. Be 35+ and believe that women age like fine wine.  
  4. Enjoy a kitchen dance party. No professional dance training required.  
  5. Commit to one day a week of dance and laughter until June 2022. 
  6. Commit to participating in competitions and shake it like everyone is watching.  
  7. Have a sense of humour and especially be able to laugh at oneself. 
  8. Have a flexible and open mind  ready to learn and dance to a wide range of music and styles. Flexible body not required. 
  9. Be a team player cause teamwork without team is just work and who wants that.
  10. Honour our bodies and work through aches, pains and ice packs together.
  11. Hold a valid passport (the vaccine one of course!).

Donations Needed For Vancouver BC SPCA & Charlie’s Food Bank

Hey East Van peeps, we’ve just learnt that the Vancouver BC SPCA and Charlie’s Food Bank have put out a call for donations of DRY CAT FOOD and WET DOG FOOD. It can be pate, pureed, stew or chunks – beef, chicken, liver or fish. All flavours and types accepted, the more the better, as this allows them to manage a variety of dietary needs for pets in their care.

The Vancouver BC SPCA is located at 1205 East 7th Avenue and staffed 7 days a week. If you are in a position to donate some food, they ask that you drop them off donations between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm and place them in the bin located outside at their entrance.

The Britannia Plaza Market Continues Until October 21st

After a successful run this summer, the Britannia Plaza Market which is located outside of the Britannia Community Centre and near the Britannia Library, continues until October 21st. You are invited to stop by this Saturday, September 11th from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm and check out some local producers, artists and makers. The outdoor markets will then continue on Thursdays ONLY from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm until October 21st. Stop by support local artists, makers and growers.

19th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival

The 19th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival happens this September with a variety of activities. The Harvest Fair and Lost Streams Lantern Parade taking place Saturday, September 11th is one of the highlights. It is a family friendly event that celebrates the full moon, harvest abundance and diverse cultural traditions. The festival features the arts, community and the environment. The event is co-hosted by the Still Moon Arts Society and the Renfrew Park Community Association and if you haven’t attended previously, we encourage you to check out the display of creativity, colour, light and music. This year’s theme is Balance in which organizers hope you will give some thought to seeking harmony within our communities as well as working together to reimagine, rebuild and find balance so our world can thrive.

The festivities on September 11th begin in the afternoon with the Harvest Fair which kicks off at 4:00 pm and goes till 7:00 pm at Slocan Park. During the Harvest Fair, there will be live performances, community booths and a veggie competition. This event is a pre-cursor to the Lost Streams Lantern Parade that begins at dusk and goes from Slocan Park to Collingwood Park. Everyone is invited to participate in this walk and lanterns are encouraged.

If you are looking to make a lantern, there are 2 Free Form Lantern Workshops on September 8th and 9th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the Slocan Field House.
