KnifeWear Moves To Permanent Home At 4215 Main Street

KnifeWear1Knifewear moves from Pop Up Shop on East Hastings to their permanent home at 4215 Main Street. If you love to cook, then this is the store for you.  They have amazingly beautiful quality knives from Japan.  Their Grand Opening is now underway with some special events lined up for the opening.  August 11 – 16 they will be hosting a Knifewear Garage Sale.  Twice a year, owner, Kevin Kent, travels to Japan to meet with blacksmiths and sources out one-of-a-kind finds, some lightly used samples knives and a few unusual items thrown in for good measure. We understand prices start from $75 for the Garage Sale. On August 20th, they will have on hand a 27th generation Master Blacksmith, Moritaka Hamono from 9:00 am to 11:00 am who will be available to personalize your knife. As an added bonus, knives are currently 10% off at all locations and online at KnifeWear.com until the end of August. Stop by and check out their permanent home which is in the midst of many great shops on Main Street.

Best of Craft BC At The Wise Hall August 17th

BestofCraftBCLibertyLiberty Merchant Company presents the Best of Craft BC tasting event on Wednesday, August 17th at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. The event will feature craft beers, cider, mead and spirits from all over BC. There will also be some tasty samplings from Commercial Drive food purveyors. This event is also a fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society which helps provide food for up to 25,000 people in need each week. All ticket sales and draw prizes directly support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Tickets are $24.99 each plus a food donation (canned tomatoes have been requested). The event gets under way at 7:00 p.m. and goes till 9:00 pm.

Til Death – The Six Wives of Henry VIII At The Rio Theatre September 8–18, 2016

TilDeathSixWivesThe Vancouver Fringe Festival is coming September 8-18, 2016 and will be showcased at various  venues throughout the City.  One show that caught our eye is ‘Til Death’ – The Six Wives of Henry VIII which will take the stage at the Rio Theatre September 8 – 18, 2016. This show was Pick of the Fringe in 2012 and is a fast paced one woman show showcasing the six wines of Henry VIII.  You will meet the Betrayed Wife, The Scheming Wife, The Peacemaker, The Ugly German, The Tarty One and the One In Love with Someone Else.   We understand that the show starts off in the afterlife in a bizarre waiting room of sorts. One by one, the wives of Henry VIII arrive, much to the shock and dismay of each previous wife. What culminates is the heated frenzy of an ex-wives club where these women swap stories, toss Anne Boleyn’s head around, pick on the ugly German one, and, most importantly, fight for the right to be acknowledged as Henry’s true bride and eternal partner. But when Henry arrives, everything changes. This production is brought to you by Monster Theatre and under the direction of Tara Travis who is an actor-writer-puppeteer and artistic producer with a long list of works to her name.

The Uncommon Café Offers Basic Choux Pastry & Basic Canning Classes

ChouxPastryTartineMapleOur friends at The Uncommon Café, 477 Powell Street, have lined up some more fun classes this August. The classes are led by Valentine Kitamura owner of Tartine Maple.   Valentine was born and raised in France and is a chef that has worked in hotels in Paris, Singapore, New Orleans and Toronto.  She now works with The Uncommon Café, a commissary and café located just across the street from Oppenheimer Park. This great spot now has a lot of great company with Ed’s Daily, The Heatley and The MacKenzie Room just minutes away. We’ve set out below the classes they have lined up this August which are a bit shorter, 2 hours, so you can maximize your time outdoors.

Basic Choux Pastry –  August 10th 6-8 pm

This is one of their most popular classes in which you learn to make basic choux pastry. Although this class is a bit shorter, you will still learn the basics of making cream puffs and eclairs. You will also get to pipe your own pastries, fill and decorate them, before taking everything home to devour.  The cost of this class is $50 per person, but if you book one week in advance, you save 15%.  You can book your spot online via Eventbrite.

Basic Canning – Keep Summer In The Jar – August 17th 6-8 pm

This is a new class that will introduce you to the basic techniques of canning.  With all the summer fruit that’s now on hand, this is certainly a way to keep some of those summer flavours handy.  This is a demonstration class and Valentine will show you how to make blackberry jam and as well as dill pickles.  She will also talk about how to can fruits, salsa, pate so you leave with some great tips to work with at home.The cost of this class is also $50 per person, and again if you book one week in advance, you save 15%.   You can book your spot online via Eventbrite. New In Town: Gift-A-Green – The Greeting Card That Grows

Postcard-mini_2048x2048It’s been a little while since we’ve featured a new business in East Van and we recently came across something we loved.  It’s called Gift-A-Green and it’s another great thing to come out of the creative space that is the MakerLabs. Cam Auge and Bryan Kinney have based their business in Strathcona and are single handedly bringing “LIFE” back to the greeting card industry.  What is “Gift-A-Green”?  It’s much like a postcard, but it’s actually a pouch with seeds for micro-greens which grow in the pouch itself. And yes, it’s edible, that is the point. Once you’ve purchased the pouch, you just write your personal message to the recipient, their name and address, affix a stamp and pop in the mail.  For the receiver of the Gift-A-Green, you just tear along the dotted line, remove the small bag filled with seeds and add water to it, place the pouch in a sunny location and watch the microgreens grow.  They should be ready to eat in about 14 days time.  The greetings currently come in 5 themes including Thank You, Congratulations, I Love You, Thinking Of You and Happy Birthday. All the seeds are locally sourced and non GMO.  You can purchase their greeting cards online for $9.95 for a single Gift-A-Green or all 5 messages for $45.95. Exhibit Opening Every Day in Every Way At The Cultch Gallery August 4th

Deborah-Leigh-225x300The Gallery at The Cultch invites you to an opening reception this Thursday, August 4th. It is a group exhibition from Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture which features artists living with disabilities.  We are thrilled to see some great artists in this mix including one we’ve featured here at ILiveInEastVan.com, that being L.J. Throstle.  Other artists include Deborah Leigh, whose work is pictured to the left, Dawn Margaret Enman, Take5 and Trish Smith.  All the artists will be on hand for this reception which kicks off at 6:00 pm and runs till 8:00 pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.  If you miss the opening reception, the exhibit will run until August 27th.

Fundraiser At Stateside Craft August 15th for Pediatric Transplant Research

Addison.jpgYou are invited to Stateside Craft on Monday, August 15th for a burger, fries and refreshment of your choice, being beer, wine or a highball.  This event is hosted by Sheena & Adam Lee, Elaine Yong and Aaron McArthur. The inspiration for this event is a lovely girl named Addison who had a heart transplant at 3 weeks old. Addison recently celebrated her 5th birthday or ‘heart-iversary’ and is doing well.  The facts are that the long-term survival rate for transplant receipts is only 50% at 10 years.  There is more awareness in recent years of organ donors and the need for them, but that is only part of the equation.  Research is needed to ensure transplant recipients lead long and healthy lives. All of the funds raised on August 15th go directly towards the great work BC scientists are doing in this area.  There are 175 tickets to be sold at only $25 for such a great cause.  Kids are welcome to join you.  Did we mention, there will be a raffle with some great prizes on hand?  You are asked to RSVP by registering for free through the Eventbrite page and organizers will contact you with details on how you can pay for your ticket. If  payment is collected through Eventbrite, there is of course a fee. They would like to see every penny go to transplant research. Come out and support this worthwhile cause.

Sunee Dhaliwal: Live Stand-Up At The Rio Theatre August 4th

SuneeDhaliwal.pngYou are invited to a special taping happening this Thursday at the Rio Theatre.  Local comedian, Sunee Dhaliwal is taping a new comedy special.  If you haven’t checked out this rising star, we recommend you see him now while a ticket price for his show is only $10. We first saw Sunee as the warm up act for a comedian at a New West comedy club a couple of years ago.  He stole the show.  What can we say about this comedian, he has stage presence and at 6’5” that is in part why, but he is very affable, likeable and most of all funny.  Sunee hails from Abbotsford and had planned on a very different career path which included working at Staples while working towards a degree in criminology.  A former boss signed him up for an open mike night and a new career path began. He brings some interesting life experiences to his comedy from his Indo-Canadian background which included some funny dating experiences with a large extended family running a commentary on your life and adding in their cultural expectations.  Sunee has been doing stand up comedy for many years now and has been touring as a headliner across Canada, appearing at festivals and in various TV specials.  We encourage you to check out this local talent this Thursday at the Rio Theatre. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the show gets under way at 8:00 pm.
