Our weekly feature What’s On East Van sets out some cool events for the upcoming weekend.  Beyond the weekend, we invite you to check out our Event Listing which is updated daily and features events for the month and beyond.

Bonfire Nights – Fundraiser For Aunt Leah’s Place – April 5th

A group of talented musicians are hosting an inaugural Bonfire Nights Fundraising event in support of Aunt Leah’s Place on Friday, April 5th. My Blue Dirt Girl trio, Sarah Wheeler and Reid Jamieson will perform at The Notional Space, 1523 Pender Street.  Luppolo’s Brewing Co. will be donating some craft beer for the evening along with special camp mugs. Doors open at 7:30 pm, music kicks off at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available through Brown Paper Tickets.

Old Time Dance Party – Wise Hall – April 5th 

Professor Bango and The Estro-Jennies bring a night of square dancing with lessons on the spot this Friday night to the Wise Hall.  Everyone is welcome. Doors open at 8:00 pm, dancing starts at 9:00 pm.  Tickets are $17.50 online and $25 at the door.

Movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – Rio Theatre April 5th & April 7th

If you missed this Oscar winning movie Bohemian Rhapsody celebrating the music of Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury played fabulously by Rami Malek, you are in luck. The movie is showing twice this weekend, Friday and Sunday nights. For tickets, visit Rio Theatre.

The Tashme Project: The Living Archives – Firehall Arts Centre 

The Tashme Project: The Living Archives is now on at the Firehall Arts Centre until April 13th. The Living Archives traces the history and common experience of the Nisei (second generation Japanese Canadians) through childhood, internment in Canada during the Second World War, and post-war resettlement east of the Rockies. This production is an embodiment of Nisei character, language, spirit and story, and brings to light a part of Canadian history.

5th Annual Beer Bash – Britannia Community Centre – April 6th 

This Saturday, Britannia Community Ice Rink plays host to the 5th Annual Beer Bash. This is a fundraiser for BASH – Britannia After School Hockey. 100% of the proceeds going to kids playing hockey.  Outside of watching some great hockey with 5 teams battling it out, you will find 25 local craft breweries serving cans/tastings on the rink concourse. Tickets are $25.

BC Distilled Main Event – Croatian Cultural Centre – April 6th

BC Distilled happens for the 6th year this Saturday at the Croatian Cultural Centre. The event is an artisan distillery festival, so lots of tastings available by great local makers. The Main Distilling Event happens Saturday night from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Tickets are $70.

Documentary – A Perfect 14 – Rio Theatre – April 7th

This documentary explores the world of plus size models fighting to reshape the fashion industry and shake the tree as to what defines beauty.  A Perfect 14 shows this Sunday afternoon at the Rio Theatre 3:30 pm. A Q&A follows with the filmmaker. For tickets, visit the Rio Theatre.

Anthology: Sci-Fi Sundays – Havana Theatre – April 7th 

A new show from Instant Theatre starts this Sunday. Anthology explores the farthest reaches of the galaxy, mix in a little drama, some adventure, maybe a cautionary tale and who knows what may come.  Tickets are $12. To purchase advance tickets, visit Showpass.

LIVE MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT & COMEDY

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market 10 am – 2 pm.
