The Woman In Black Opening at Little Mountain Gallery October 31st

28 Oct

SpookyHouse

Yogurt Theatre Co. presents “The Woman in Black” at Little Mountain Gallery starting this Thursday, October 31st.    This production is the second by this young theatre company which was founded in December 2012 by artistic director Chris Cochrane.

The play is about Arthur Kipps, a retired lawyer, who enlists the help of a young actor to tell the story of what happened to him when he was sent to the late Mrs. Drablow’s creaky old estate in Eel Marsh. The cold air, thick fog and Mrs. Drablow’s old mansion set the stage for a series of events that will change Arthur’s life forever.

This is a terrifying ghost play adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the book by Susan Hill. The Woman in Black has been running in London’s West End since 1988 and has been performed all around the world. This is not a bloody or gruesome story, but one that crawls up your spine and whispers in your ear.  How befitting the opening night is this Halloween. The production runs till November 16th at Little Mountain Gallery, 195 East 26th Avenue with shows at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available at BrownPaperTickets.  Here are a few teasers from London as to what you can expect at the Woman in Black.

“Don’t go unless you like being scared out of your wits.”  Sunday Mirror

“One of the most brilliantly effective spine-chillers you will ever encounter”  The Daily Telegraph

“Prepare to be haunted by one of the best horror stories your will ever see on the stage.”  HELLO Magazine

You are invited to an Opening Reception at The Art Way Studios, 649 East 15th Avenue, this Saturday, October 12th. The show is titled Parallel Circus and features local artists, Dominique Norville, and Karen Bedard.   If you are unfamiliar with the The Art Way, it was founded in January 2010 by local artist, Denna Erickson, and is a learning centre that offers art classes and workshops for adults, youth and children. They provide a supportive and empowering environment for all students. The aim is to enable people to explore their creative side through expression in various mediums.  This Saturday, you can come out and learn about the classes that are offered and speak to the artists that are showcasing their works.  The Art Way is located at the corner of Fraser & Kingsway between two of my favourite places Les Faux Bourgeois and Collage Collage.  The reception begins at 6:00 p.m. and goes till 9:00 p.m. with food and refreshments being served. Come out and support these local artists!

Fall/Winter Schedule for East Vancouver Farmers Markets

5 Oct

Pumpkins & Squash

There is something about the Farmers Market in the fall when many grocery stores seem to have less local produce available. In the the fall and winter, going to the Farmers Market is one of my favourite things. Something about bundling up in the fresh brisk air and wandering about. Of course, there is so much more than produce at these markets.  This coming week you can expect to find squash, cranberries, soup, breads, cheese, eggs and so much more.   As for which farmers markets are on when and for how long this fall and winter,  see the rundown below:

Main Street:  This market has finished for this season. Last one was Wednesday, October 2nd.

Mount Pleasant Farmers Market:  Has only 2 more weekends. You can still catch it Sunday, October 6th and October 12th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Guelph Street between 7th and 8th Avenue.

Trout Lake Farmers Market:  This market continues at John Hendry Park on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. until  October 19th.

River District Farmers Market:  Four more markets to go for this season.  You can catch this market on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the River District, 8683 Kerr St, in SE Vancouver until October 26th.

Nat Bailey Stadium Farmers Market: The Winter Market starts November 2nd at Nat Bailey Stadium for its third season.  Vancouver Farmers Market is planning a great vendor line up  as well as hot food choices and heated seating areas. You will be able to find vendor listings for each week over the winter on the Vancouver Farmers Market website.  This Winter Market will run until April 26th with one day off on Saturday,  December 28th.

Whichever market you choose to visit, come out and support these local vendors!
