Upcoming Halloween Events In East Vancouver

halloween-night2Lots of fun events coming to East Vancouver for Halloween, that includes for the big kids and the wee ones.  We have set out a sampling of some of the events happening in East Van. Encore 80’s Night Halloween Party with Mark Olexson and the A-Deez at Federico’s Supper Club, 1728 Commercial Drive, on Friday, October 31st. Three course meal for $50 (includes dinner, show fee concert & dancing). Dinner from 6:30 pm, Performance 10:00 pm.  To make your reservation T:  604-251-3473.

Variety Show ‘Showcase From The Crypt’ at the Rio Theatre. You are invited to put on your costume for a spooktacular show at the Rio Theatre on Friday, October 31st at 8:00 pm.   The Cryptkeeper, along with his co-hosts The Vault Keeper and the Old Witch to name but a few, will keep things going through out the night. These ghoulish hosts will be holding costume contests and trivia games. Then The Fictionals take over to do some ghastly Improv. As well, you can expect some Burlesque from the fiery ginger Dezi Dezire. Also on deck are the burning fire dancing skills of Vesper Sephony. Last but not least, The Gentlemen Hecklers bring you a special tale that promises to make your sides split. Advance tickets are available for $12 and tickets at the door will be $15.  Note, this is a 19+ event with bar service

Halloween Night Tribute Terror at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, with a long line up of music including The Ramores, The Dirty Magazines,  The Manglers, The Spasms and featuring members of The Jolts – SNFU – Go for Three – Cast of 1000s – Dirt – Death Sentence – Swank – The Hip Type – The Enigmas – The New Black – Nervous Talk – Insex – The Pasties – The Choir Practice – The Cadaver Dogs – Jackalope – Thrill Squad – The Cane Toads – The Ballentynes – The Excessives – Little Guitar Army.  Doors open at 8:00 pm, music at 9:00 pm SHARP! This is a 19+ event. Tickets are $15 and available at The Wise Hall & Lounge, Red Cat Records & Highlife Records .

Parade of Lost Souls. This is a beloved East Van event with the location to be announced at midnight October 31st on the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page. Expect a parade of wild costumes, giant puppets, live music, a Thriller Flash Mob and performance art created by local community members. The Parade of Lost Souls will take place in East Vancouver on November 1st 7:00 – 10:00 pm. This event is free, all ages. Costumes are encouraged.

Fright Nights at Playland, 2901 E. Hastings St.  Seven haunted houses, 13 rides, a fire show, sideshow comedy and Monsters of Schlock. Fright Nights is now on until November 1st (enter E. Hastings & Windermere) tickets $29 – $63 and available at FrightNights.ca.

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES:

Trick Or Treat in the East Village:  October 25th Sat. Noon – 3:00 pm.  Come dressed in your Halloween finest and trick or treat your way along the stretch from 2100 to 2800 East Hastings Street.

Trout Lake Community Centre: Saturday, October 25th 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.  Calling all Halloween costumers. You are invited to come jump in the bouncy castle, play Halloween games, and make some pumpkin crafts. Lots more surprises planned for the wee ones Registration required. $4.00 per child

Britannia Community Centre: Halloween Howl – Sat. October 25th  (1 – 8 years). You are invited to a FREE spooky community events with entertainment and ghostly games and, of course, tricks and treats.   Event takes place in Gym D from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Britannia Community Centre: Family Pumpkin Carving – Sun, October 26th (1:00 – 3:00 pm). You are invited to come celebrate Halloween by carving a pumpkin with your family. Cost is based on a family of 4 and will include 2 pumpkins. Additional pumpkins can be purchased for $3 but must be done at the centre. Registration is requested.  Hot chocolate and carving utensils will be provided. All children under 12 years of age must have a parent or guardian present. Cost is $6.

Sunset Community Centre:  Haunted House & Carnival – October 24th  6:30 – 9:00 pm.  Haunted House, carnival games, trick or treating & concessions. This is a FREE event for all ages.

East Van Indie Swap October 25th In Mount Pleasant

EastVanIndieSwapc5fb7a_e2a1a940a84e4626807c6bb7b5fc3dd2_jpg_srz_471_741_75_22_0_50_1_20_0The  Eastside Flea is returning to the Independent, 188 Kingsway, this Saturday for the East Van Indie Swap.   The market will run during the day from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm with a break for dinner and will resume for the evening market at 6:00 pm and go till 11:00 pm.  Note the evening market is for ages 19+.

This Saturday’s market with feature a great line up local vendors showcasing vintage items, handmade and household goods and much more. You will also find a daytime mini vinyl record fair, an evening bar with craft beer & delicious Fall cocktails, outdoor food trucks, DJ’s spinning tunes, live music from Portage & Main and a debut performance from Chinatown (Tough Lovers band new project).   Everyone is encouraged to mix, mingle, barter and swap.  Admission for the East Van Indie Swap is $3.00 for the day market, $5.00 for the evening market or $7.00 all day. Come out and support local.

All Souls Night October 25th – Light A Candle. Leave A Message

AllSoulsNightOct.25You are invited to All Souls Night Saturday, October 25th  6:00 pm – 10:00 pm at Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street.  This event is curated by artists Paula Jardine and Marina Szijart and was created to provide opportunities for the public to commemorate their dead with a family-oriented community art event. The Celebration Hall will be open 6:00 -9:00 pm for tea and personal memorial making. Artists and community members will come together to create a sanctuary for remembrance and reflection. You are encouraged to bring a lantern and candles as well as photos if you wish to create a memorial for a loved one. Also, at 7:11 pm, you can be witness to the Premiere of “11” which will be a site-specific performance of Mark Haney’s composition commemorating 11 individuals who served in the World Wars. Cued by a solo trumpet, every 11 minutes brass instruments placed around the central area of the cemetery will tell their 11 individual stories in concert, their sounds harmonizing over the landscape through which visitors are walking. Inspired by the stories of WWII veterans who settled in Renfrew Heights. The piece celebrates an often forgotten part of Vancouver’s history. Lantern Making In South Hill Saturday October 18th For All Souls Night

LostSoulsSouthHilltin-can lanterns hangingSouth Hill Neighbours is hosting a lantern making workshop on Saturday, October 18th at Mountain View Cemetery Celebration Hall from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. You are invited to come and craft your own lantern. Supplies will be provided, but you are asked to bring your creativity with you.  Last year they saw beautiful carved turnip lanterns (pictured below), wax paper window lanterns and tissue paper globe lanterns.  Adults and teens can design their own more complex shimmering orbs of beauty while small children can work on simpler versions.  All ages are welcome.  South Hill Neighbours will be creating these lanterns in preparation for a lantern procession to All Souls Night which takes place on October 25th.  Everyone is invited to come out and participate.  If you plan to participate in the All Souls Night, participants are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones they have lost so they can incorporate their photos into the lantern so that it becomes a creative memorial to honour that person.  This community event is organized by South Hill Neighbours and funded by the Neighbourhood Small Grant Project which is brought to you by the Vancouver Foundation. Broadway East Art Walk Community Film Festival Saturday October 11th

CommunityFilmFestivalOct.11The folks at Broadway East Art Walk will be hosting their second annual Community Film Festival on Saturday, October 11th from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at 303 8th Avenue. You are invited to come celebrate the places and stories that make our neighbourhoods unique and see them unfold through the screening of local short films. You will experience a wide range of locally made films in a variety of genres, ranging from documentary to music videos and experimental films. The event is free but an RSVP is required which you can do via this link at Eventbrite. If you would like a run down of the all the films that will be showing, visit Broadway East Art Walk.

 

AND for something else artistic, fun and environmentally friendly, the Broadway East Art Walk will be collecting broken umbrellas to upcycle them and create the Mount Pleasant Canopy Project. If you wish to get a sense of what this type of project ‘could’ look like check out these great displays in Agueda, Portugal. You are asked to bring your broken umbrellas to the Community Film Festival. You can also leave the umbrellas at the front desk of The Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, 800 E Broadway, during their normal hours Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. This is another great community project funded by the Vancouver Foundation through the Neighbourhood Small Grants program.

Morning Social & Yoga At 33 Acres Brewing Company Starts October 19th

You are invited to come out again for yoga, beer, brunch and to social at 33 Acres Brewing Company, 15 West 8th Avenue, starting Sunday, October 19th. Anita Cheung will be leading the yoga class with ‘flow yoga’.  After class, you get to sit down for brunch and a beer all of which is included in the price.  Brunch will consist of waffles or an avocado smash. If you prefer coffee, it will be available.  Classes start at 9:00 am and will run for 1 1/2 hours every Sunday for 4 weeks.   Cost for all 4 yoga classes is $100 which includes brunch, beer and/or coffee.  To register online for the class, visit 33 Acres Brewing Company. The Parade of Lost Souls Saturday November 1st

ParadeofLostSoulsWe are pleased to report that this much loved East Van event will carry on. The Parade of Lost Souls is a community-driven parade inspired by Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). In recent years, the parade has travelled around various parts of East Vancouver featuring performance art, interactive art installations and YOU lost souls.

The Day of the Dead is a time for celebration, for ceremony, for reflection and renewal. You are invited to come out and wear a costume, bring and play an instrument, make a dance and/or join in on a dance. This parade is for YOU and by YOU, all the lost souls of the world. Bring your past and your present for a celebration of life and death. We may all be lost, but at least we can all be lost together.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, November 1st from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The location will be revealed at midnight on Halloween on the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page as well as the website dustyflowerpot.org. As in past year’s, there will be workshops hosted at the Britannia Community Center as well as at the Dusty Flowershop Studio. The Parade of Lost Souls was conceptualized and produced by the beloved Public Dreams Society for over 25 years. The parade now carries on under the direction of its co-producer of the last 4 years, The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. There are many people working behind the scenes to make this great community event happen. Rescue Me: Phoebe Is Looking For Her Forever Home

PhoebeVanSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely cat named Phoebe. She is a beautiful plus sized sweetie with a snowy white coat. Phoebe came to the Vancouver SPCA in early September as her caretakers were no longer able to give her the care and attention that she required. Phoebe had been living with them for the last three years. Previous to that she had been living happily with her original caretaker, but when her original caretaker became ill, Phoebe was re-homed with friends.  Having had two homes in her short lifetime, the Vancouver SPCA is hoping that Phoebe will finally find her forever family. Phoebe would do best in a household where she is the only pet, as her diet needs to be carefully monitored. Due to her large size, Phoebe isn’t able to move quickly, therefore she will need to be kept indoors where it is safe. Phoebe has lived with both men and women, but she is extremely fond of women. When she hears a woman’s voice she waddles over to investigate. Phoebe loves lounging around, being social and being groomed. She is a quiet girl and has a barely audible meow. If you think you could give Phoebe her forever home, or know someone that can, please contact the BC SPCA Vancouver Branch by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.Phoebe is currently in foster care, but her friends at the Vancouver SPCA are happy to set up a meet and greet.  As always, we thank you in advance for sharing this information to help Phoebe find her forever home.

East Van GoGos Fundraiser Sunday October 19th Trout Lake Community Centre

EastVanGoGoLogoThe East Van GoGos invite you to their 6th Annual Jazz Brunch Sunday October 19th. What is a GoGo you might ask? Gogo is a Zulu word meaning “grandmother”. The Greater Van Gogos which includes chapters in various parts of the Lower Mainland are grandmothers and ‘grandothers’ working in groups to support African grandmothers raising a generation of children orphaned by AIDS. This network of grandmother groups in south western BC are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

In March 2006, Stephen Lewis, a Canadian humanitarian and former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, issued a call to Canadian grandmothers to bond with their African counterparts. In his travels, Lewis noticed the phenomenal grandmothers who had buried their adult children and stepped in to raise the orphans left behind. They needed money for school fees and uniforms, food and other necessities. In the Vancouver area, three women answered the call. They invited a few others and launched Greater Van Gogos in the summer of 2006 with four groups. Although grandmothers in Africa’s many countries are addressed in different ways – ja ja in Uganda, sho sho in Kenya or nyana in Zambia – the word gogo felt right. Many years later, there are 20 groups registered with approximately 600 members from Vancouver and the surrounding areas. Together they have raised more than $1 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The funds are distributed to community level projects supporting grandmothers and the children in their care in 15 sub-Saharan African countries.

The brunch on October 19th is a fundraiser for the East Van GoGos which will feature a musical performance by Brian Tate who will entertain you with some jazz, gospel and African music.  Homemade brunch will be provided along with coffee, tea and juice. The brunch takes place from 12:00 – 2:00 pm in the Grandview Room at the Trout Lake Community Centre, 3360 Victoria Drive, the music gets under way at 12:45 pm. Oktoberfest At Bomber Brewing September 28th

OktoberfestBomber Bomber Brewing, 1488 Adanac Street, invites you to Oktoberfest in their backyard. They will be firing up the BBQ from which you can expect a Bavarian treat hot off the grill. There will also be live music by The Creaking Planks and, of course beer, specifically their Oktoberfest Lager. Tickets for this event are $35 and available online via Eventbrite. Your ticket includes food, 2 glasses of beer and your very own Bomber Beer Stein. There will also be prizes for those that dress up and show their true Oktoberfest spirit. This is a 19+ event. The event gets under way at 2:00 pm and goes till 6:00 pm.
