Mrs. Warren’s Profession The Rickshaw Theatre April 22 – 27

7 Apr

RickshawMrs.WarrensMrs. Warren’s Profession is a theatre event being presented by Alley Theatre starting April 22nd for a four day run.  This play was originally written in 1893 by George Bernard Shaw and was originally banned for its controversial subject matter for over 30 years.  Alley Theatre invites you to a post modern revisitation of this famous play which will include live music by Juno award-winning musicians Gentle Party featuring Shanto Acharia, Meredith Bates and Elisa Thorn at the Rickshaw Theatre, 254 E. Porno Death Cult At Firehall Arts Centre March 5 – 8

28 Feb

PornoDeathCult

Porno Death Cult makes its world premiere at the Firehall Arts Centre March 5 – 8, 2014. Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg brings her unique, inquisitive eye for horror and hilarity to the big questions of spirituality and existence with her new solo work.

Porno Death Cult is one of Friedenberg’s most personal works yet.  Tara says “It certainly mines more of myself”. In 2010, she walked the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route through Southern France and Spain, which prompted her to examine her own skepticism about religion and her relationship with spirituality. While not religious herself, she was fascinated with the opulent, gilded Spanish cathedrals and the huge statues of the bleeding Jesus. In the piece she draws on elements of her own lived experience – the contradictions of West Coast yoga culture (she’s been practising yoga since she was 3 years old), southern Baptist traditions of North Carolina where her father lives, and the questions that walking the Camino raised for her.

The show draws on a diverse range of talented collaborators to create an immersive live experience where dance, art and theatre converge. Porno Death Cult runs March 5th – 8th at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova. Tickets range from $20 – $30 and are available online. Show runs at 8:00 pm each evening with an artist talkback on March 6th.
