NeighbourhoodSmallGrants2014

Would you like to make your community a better place? If yes, consider applying for a Neighbourhood Small Grant.  If you have not heard about this program, it is worth looking into. Speaking from past experience this program is a great way to get to know your neighbours and build community.  You can apply for grants from $50 to $500 for projects in your neighbourhood. The aim of the program, which is funded by the Vancouver Foundation, is to connect and engage people within the community in which they live.  Neighbours can get together and make an application for a variety of events. Some examples of past events include neighbourhood block parties, clean up campaigns, ethnic cooking classes, emergency preparedness plans, community gardens and an outdoor movie night.   The ideas are only limited by your imagination.  Once your application is submitted, it is reviewed by a Resident Advisory Committee made up of residents in your neighbourhood. Applicants are advised in late May/early June if they receive funding and are usually asked to have their projects completed by November 30th.   In East Vancouver, the program is available in the following areas:

You are invited to come and experience an evening of Indian and Balkan music and dance this Saturday night. This event hosted by Slivovica Productions and Transformation Projects promises to be an energetic and fun evening.   The evening will kick off with a dance workshop led by Nada Putnik of the Gradina Balkan Dancers and Deep Sahota of the Royal Academy of Bhangra.  They will be teaching you Indian dances as well as some traditional community folk dances.  No experience is necessary to participate. Everyone is welcome to attend. The only request is that you arrive on time so you can take part in the lessons.

After the dance lesson, the show begins.  The evening will showcase the talents of the Vancity Bhangra dancers, one of Metro Vancouver’s most popular dance troupes and the Vijay Indian Brass Band performing traditional Indian wedding music.  To mix things up, Orkestar Slivovica, a Balkan Brass band, will showcase their talents by performing music in the Roma-trumpet-band tradition from Southern Serbia and Macedonia.  And if that’s not enough, Luciterra Fusion Bellydancers will perform a modern fusion dance.

This event takes place at the Russian Hall located in Strathcona at 600 Campbell Avenue. There will be a bar and food selection including some Indian sweets, spicy hot Chai tea, Bosnian savory pastries, signature Serbian sausages as well as wine and spirits and a selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Tickets are $20 in advance and available online at Brown Paper Tickets, or in person at Highlife Records, 1317 Commercial Drive. Tickets will also be available at the door for $25. Note all ages are welcome and those under 19 get in for $10.  Doors open at 7:00 pm with the dance workshop getting under way soon thereafter and the show gets under way at 8:00 pm.

The Baker’s Market Returns To SE Vancouver February 16th

9 Feb

PurpleMacaronsBakersMarket

The Baker’s Market is back for the Spring!  The first of 7 dates get under way Sunday, February 16th.  This much loved and well attended event took a hiatus this past fall while organizer, Connie, flew off to France.  She spent six months doing some intensive baking, studying and tastings to earn a Diplome de Patisserie from Le Cordon Blue in Paris, France.  Congratulations Connie!

If you haven’t attended this Baker’s Market, it is a community based event that brings out baking enthusiasts, pastry students, mommy bakers as well as budding entrepreneurs.  Each week you will find different bakers on hand offering a wide array of baked goods. Some of the delicious things you will find include exquisite French macarons by J’adore les Macarons, delicious lemons squares from The Lemon Square and delectable baked breads from the The Bread Lab. Other vendors on hand include Andrea’s Oven, GI Jane with Healthy Treats for hungry foodies and the ladies from Petit Four Pastries plus of course many more.  Each week has different vendors, so the offerings will be a bit different each time, but the types of goodies you can expect to find include organic muffins, brownies, handmade chocolates, Belgian waffles, scones, preserves, breads, tarts, granola and much more. If you have something specific you’d like, I do recommend you arrive early.

The Baker’s Market will be held at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre, 7646 Prince Albert Street (60th & Fraser).  Admission to the market is free, there is ample parking and my favourite part, lots of samples! So come out and support your local talented creative bakers.   If you this miss the kick off Sunday, February 16th, not to worry, there will be 6 more markets on February 23rd, March 2nd,  March 9th,  April 20th, April 27th and May 4th. The market runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each Sunday.

Rescue Me: Charlie & Friends at Vancouver SPCA Looking For Their Forever Homes

30 Jan

CharlieVanSPCAOne

Hi, my name is Charlie.  I am a 7 year old male cat. Some may say I’m a bit of a tomcat.  I am a well behaved indoor kitty who was used to living in an apartment until my elderly owner became ill. Now my temporary home is the Vancouver SPCA.  I am now looking for a new forever home.  I am friendly with people, will purr like crazy if you scratch my cheeks. I must be honest though and tell you I am not used to being around lots of people, kids or dogs.  After hanging out at the shelter for a bit, I have learnt I don’t really like other cats all that much, bit of an independent spirit I guess.  I do enjoy playing with my toys and like to use my scratching post.  Like most pets I do like a nice routine. I think I would be perfect company for an adult living alone.  If you want to see me online, you can check me out on my video.  Check out my beautiful green eyes, aren’t they lovely? Do you know someone who would like a handsome tomcat to hang out with?

While you are stopping by, can I introduce you to some of my shelter buddies? Like me, they are looking for a forever home.  Meet my friends Clover & Marigold and Jasmine & Astrid. They are bonded pairs of young female rabbits that came from a home with way too many bunnies. They said there were 11 of them that came together, but now they are the only 4 remaining from the original group. They are looking for a cool forever home to hang out at.  Do you know someone that could give them a home?  They are such beautiful bunnies.

If you or someone you know could give me or my friends a home, the Vancouver SPCA would love to hear from you, heck we’d love to hear from you, but you have to come see us for that.  You can reach the Vancouver SCPA by email at Vancouver@spca.b.ca or by phone or 604.879.7721, or stop by and see us at 1205 East 7th Avenue. Thanks!  If you wish to share this on Twitter or Facebook with your friends, we won’t mind.
