Night of 1,000 Stars – Fundraiser For Jess Nichol and Keating Gudgeon Memorial Awards VCC – May 13, 2017

JessNicholVancouver Community College Foundation is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday, May 13th at the Broadway Campus. The Foundation is a registered charity whose mandate is to raise funds for VCC student scholarships, bursaries and training materials.  This Saturday, there are raising funds for two memorial awards in honour of Jess Nichol and Keating Gudgeon.  For those that don’t know the names, Jess was a bit of a ‘celebrity” bartender. He worked in Gastown at Boneta at the time of his death. We are told that Jess had long battled mental illness and committed suicide in 2011. Jess had a love for music, so family and friends hosted fundraisers to create an award that helps a musician with preference given to someone from the DTES. The aim is to help a musician who has faced and overcome challenges, stay in school. They will offer a two-year award whereby the recipient receives a total of $3,000 over their 2 year music program at VCC. The second memorial award is in the name of Keating Gudgeon. Keating was Jess’s foster brother. The recipient of this award will be a promising writer. Although VCC doesn’t offer a journalism program, they will be seeking learners with an interest in writing, regardless of their current program. There is a stellar line up for the fundraiser including best-selling author Christopher Gudgeon will be launching a new short story collection “Encyclopedia of Lies”. The evening will feature words and music by:

§  Singer/songwriter, Dante Hadden

§  Featuring VCC students & faculty

§  Plus: A Very Special Guest (6-time Juno Award Winner)

The event will be held in the Auditorium of VCC’s Broadway Campus this Saturday, May 13th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Tickets are $25 and available online through Eventbrite.   We invite you to come out and support this event.

Sister Shop Hosts Women’s Vintage Clothing Sale At The Biltmore Cabaret April 1st

SisterShopThe Sister Shop is hosting a vintage women’s clothing sale on Saturday, April 1st at the Biltmore Cabaret from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. They are raising funds for WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre which is a non-profit organization that works to end all forms of violence against women. They provide support and healing to many women locally.  At this Saturday’s fundraiser, they will have women’s vintage clothing for sale. As well some local vendors will be on hand including Jacqueline Klassen with beautiful ceramics, Sydney Gelfer with macramé and plants and some rather sweet feminist buttons/pins by Radical Buttons.  While you shop you have the opportunity to purchase mimosas, Caesars and beer. All vintage clothing not sold this Saturday will be donated to local charity thrift shops and non-profit womens’ groups. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to WAVAW. Admission for this event is a suggested $2.00 donation.  We invite you to stop by and support this community event.

All Roads Lead To East Van T-Shirt – Fundraiser For A Little East Van School

EastVanT-ShirtSchoolPic.pngFor one that was educated by a little East Van School, Queen Alexandra Elementary School, in the writer’s case, we are all about supporting efforts that make our community a better place.  With that view in mind, we would like to introduce you to the efforts of some East Van parents raising money for Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School. Local parents got together and designed a, we think, pretty cool T-shirt with the theme of All Roads Lead To East Van. Outside of that statement being true, we are loving the design.  Parents have been working to raise funds for various projects including field trips, a community garden and most recently a new robotics program for students.  An online store was recently set up which link we’ve included here.  We EastVanT-shirtinvite you to check it out and support this cool initiative by purchasing a T-shirt(s).  This simple act will make you look a) so cool b) show your love for East Van and c) provide a wider range of learning opportunities for our East Van kids. 5th Annual East Side Beer Fest At The Wise Hall on March 15, 2017

Liberty Merchant Company presents the 5th Annual East Side Beer Fest tasting event on Wednesday, March 15th at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. The event will feature craft beers from all over the world as well as bits of food from food purveyors on Commercial Drive. This event is also a fundraiser for the Great Vancouver Food Bank Society which helps provides some 25,000 people in need each week. All ticket sales and draw prizes directly support the Great Vancouver Food Bank Society.  Tickets are $24.99 each and available at all Liberty Wine Merchant locations. In East Vancouver, visit them at 1622 Commercial Drive or call them at 604.633.1922. The event gets under way at 7:00 pm and goes till 9:00 pm.

Little By Little: A Comedy Fundraiser At Seven Dining Lounge January 12th

littlebylittleOn January 12th, you are invited to a night of stand up comedy with the aim of raising funds for two great organizations, Union Gospel Mission and Covenant House. Seven Dining Lounge, 53 West Broadway, is hosting Little By Little which features the comedic talent of Simon King who brings along Ed Konyha and Sam Tonning to entertain you for an evening.  Simon we hear has an aggressive, but intelligent style of humour.  Simon is a seasoned comedian with appearances on Comedy Network, Comedy Central, CBC and CTV to name a few. He has a commanding presence and will be sure to present a great performance for two great local organizations doing so much for those that have so little.  With the cold weather snap, Covenant House and Union Gospel Mission are doing so much more and could use every bit of help they could get. To support them, you just need to show up and provide a minimum $10 donation at the door.  Of course, if you can’t attend, you can still go online and donate to either (or both) organizations to help them do the great work they do.  The doors open at 8:00 pm on January 12th, show begins at 8:30 pm. Hot Glass Cold Beer Pairs Beer Tasting With Glassblowing October 29th

hotglasscoldbeerYou are invited to a Hot, Haunted & Hoppy Halloween event being held at the Terminal City Glass Co-Op.  Terminal City Glass Co-op is Canada’s first and only nonprofit glass arts co-op. They offer courses in glassblowing, flameworking, beadmaking and sandblasting to everyone and provide access to glassmaking equipment as well as resources for the development of emerging and established glass artists.  The event on October 29th is a fundraiser to help support the community building activities at the Co-op which includes artist slide shows, open houses and other events that promote glass as an art form.  Artists will demonstrate how to create pumpkins from molten glass, and will also blow glass into an actual hollowed-out pumpkin and create a fire-breathing glass jack-o-lantern. The event happens at their studios located at 1191 Parker Street on Saturday, October 29th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  They will  be hosting a glassblowing workshop and a beer tasting which we presume will go in that order, or well things could get a little dangerous, just saying. The beer tasting portion of the event will feature 9 local breweries including Bomber, Callister, Faculty, Postmark, Powell Street, Steel & Oak, Steamworks, Storm and Strange Fellows.   Tickets for these evening of art, fun and beer are $55 with tickets available online from TerminalCityGlass.com.

Fundraiser At Stateside Craft August 15th for Pediatric Transplant Research

Addison.jpgYou are invited to Stateside Craft on Monday, August 15th for a burger, fries and refreshment of your choice, being beer, wine or a highball.  This event is hosted by Sheena & Adam Lee, Elaine Yong and Aaron McArthur. The inspiration for this event is a lovely girl named Addison who had a heart transplant at 3 weeks old. Addison recently celebrated her 5th birthday or ‘heart-iversary’ and is doing well.  The facts are that the long-term survival rate for transplant receipts is only 50% at 10 years.  There is more awareness in recent years of organ donors and the need for them, but that is only part of the equation.  Research is needed to ensure transplant recipients lead long and healthy lives. All of the funds raised on August 15th go directly towards the great work BC scientists are doing in this area.  There are 175 tickets to be sold at only $25 for such a great cause.  Kids are welcome to join you.  Did we mention, there will be a raffle with some great prizes on hand?  You are asked to RSVP by registering for free through the Eventbrite page and organizers will contact you with details on how you can pay for your ticket. If  payment is collected through Eventbrite, there is of course a fee. They would like to see every penny go to transplant research. Come out and support this worthwhile cause.

6th Annual Britannia Garden Party Fundraiser July 7th

BritanniaGardenParty.jpgYou are invited to the 6th Annual Britannia Garden Party Fundraiser on the evening of July 7th. The location of this event is the Britannia Secondary School sports field which will be turned into one large garden party.  In the garden you will be served a  gourmet meal made from local fare which will include veg and non-veg entrees, salads, corn on the cob, nugget potatoes and more. For dessert, you can expect homemade pie and ice cream.   As this is a fundraiser, there will be a Silent Auction component to the evening and we hear over 50 items have been donated by East Van merchants, services, breweries, restaurants and cafes. Some of the names we’ve heard that have donated include the Licorice Parlour, Kali 1000 Commercial, Wonderbucks Wonderful Living, Fratelli Bakery,  Merchant’s Oyster Bar, Bikes on the Drive, Sunset Grill Vancouver, Ocean and Crow Yoga/Space and Arriva Italian Restaurant. The funds raised from this event will be used to teach kids about gardening and community.  This is a family friendly event with games and activities for all ages, live local music, a storyteller for the kids and a juice bar featuring homemade ginger beer (non-alcoholic), lemonade, kambucha and iced tea.  Tickets for this event are $30 per person, children aged 6-12 are $15 and children under 6 are free.  Added bonus when you buy your ticket, the Commercial Drive Scotiabank will be matching funds. The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread – The Jean Hanger Being Designed At MakerLabs

JeanHangerSomething very cool has been happening at MakerLabs in East Vancouver. This creative co-operative hub space is currently home to another innovation.  Steven Sal Debus, a Vancouver designer, has been working on a new product idea and prototype, specifically the Jean Hanger.  His initial steps with his new design were met with quick success.  He recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise a funding goal of $20,000 to cover his initial costs which goal he reached in under 48 hours.

So what is the Jean Hanger?  The Jean Hanger is made for yes, you guessed it jeans. It is one solid piece of  beech wood with no moving parts, but allows for easy hanging by the belt loops of your jeans.  As we know, putting jeans in the dyer, shortens the life span, so the Jean Hangar can be used for drying your jeans as well as hanging them right into the closet.  Steven Sal Debus believes that nothing needs to be created unless it solves a problem.  He hopes to use the proceeds from a successful crowdfunding campaign to launch a design company dedicated to building smarter products that save time and conserve energy. Steven’s aim now that he’s recovered his initial design costs is to raise $100,000 to launch his design company at MakerLabs.  If you would like to learn more about Steven’s Kickstarter campaign and the Jean Hangar, we invite you to check out Kickstarter-Jean Hanger.  Last check we made, Steven had 888 backers and has raised over $50,000 so he is well on his way. Forest & The Femme Spring Fundraiser At The Emerald April 7th

natureForest & The Femme is hosting a Spring fundraiser at the Emerald on April 7th. What is Forest & The Femme? It is an outdoor recreation program for marginalized women living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community. They provide access to nature for the city’s most vulnerable and isolated women, giving them an opportunity to experience the serenity of the outdoors, learn new skills, socialize safely and eat nutritious food. Their goal is to facilitate a sense of freedom, empowerment and self worth. We think this is a pretty fab organization. All you have to do is show up, support them and have a great time and you will be benefitting many.  On April 7th for the cost of your ticket, you experience live sets from East Van producers DJs: Applecat, Bastet, That African & Jonathon Julian, a live performance art collective by Subscura, a special menu and cocktail for the evening’s event.
