For those not familiar with this event, The Parade of Lost Souls is a community-driven event celebrating  Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). The event includes a parade in East Van as well as performance art, live music, interactive art installations and you lost souls. The Day of the Dead is a time for celebration, for ceremony, for reflection and renewal. The parade is for you and all the lost souls of the world. Bring your past and your present for a celebration of life and death.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, October 29th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The location will be revealed at midnight on October 28th on the Dusty Flowerpot website as well as the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page (and pssst parade route is now set out below). The Parade of Lost Souls was initially conceptualized and produced by the Public Dreams Society for over 25 years. The parade now carries on under the direction of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. As the Parade of Lost Souls is a community driven event, it can only exist through donations from the community.  It costs over $20,000 to put on this parade each year, so we invite you to consider donating online to ensure this parade continues. Whether you participate in this event, or just come out and take in the spectacle, it really is something to see.

Following the Parade, for all of those souls that want to keep the party going, the Lost Souls After-Party will be taking place at The Legion on Commercial Drive from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am. Special East Van Event At The Cultch September 24th Music Video Launch-Rodney DeCroo

20 Sep

stupidboyinanuglytownYou are invited to a unique evening this Saturday at The Cultch. Rodney DeCroo will be screening the music video for his song “Stupid Boy in an Ugly Town”. Before we tell you about this Saturday, a little back story first.  Earlier this year, East Vancouver folk singer-songwriter Rodney DeCroo and the Templeton Secondary School After School Film Program teamed up to raise $10,000 from a Kickstarter campaign. The aim was raise funds to make a music video to DeCroo’s song “Stupid Boy in an Ugly Town“. The campaign was a success and raised a total of $11,437 with the support of 155 backers. Templeton High School’s drama teacher, Jim Crescenzo, had approached DeCroo to do something with the students at Templeton. DeCroo was curious to see how a group of students from East Van would interpret the song through the lens of their own experiences. Rodney went into this wanting to teach and reinforce how art creation is transformative and a powerful vehicle for self-expression. It turned out, the students taught DeCroo a few things. DeCroo stated that he  “was deeply impressed by how much they (the students) respected and trusted each other. They showed me that art is about connection, relationships, trust, intuition, authenticity, engagement and that it isn’t something that they need us to teach them. It’s always in us which isn’t to say it’s always easily in reach. But they’re artists. They may or may not have benefited from my being there, but I was reminded watching them to trust my instincts.”

As with many art endeavours, this music video is a collaborative effort with Flick Harrison as filmmaker, Rebecca Blissett doing the photography and acting as videographer, DeCroo’s label Tonic Records, The Cultch for providing their space. We invite you to take the opportunity to check out this unique all ages event. Doors open at 7:00 pm, curtain will be at 8:30 pm. Admission is free, but you need to reserve your ticket(s) at www.rodneydecroo.com. After screening of the music video, there will be a talk back portion with the creators of the video followed by a concert from Rodney DeCroo and The Wise Blood.

SHINE: A Burlesque Musical Is Coming To The Wise Hall July 6-16

28 Jun

SHINEWe have to say first off, we are very excited about this upcoming show at the Wise Hall.  Something spectacular is coming to East Van on July 6th. It’s SHINE: A Burlesque Musical which will be taking place at the Wise Hall from July 6-16.  This show is brought to you by Sam Dulmage, Cass King and John Woods and presented by The Wet Spots and The WISE Hall.  If you have not seen the Wet Spots in action, you are missing out on a lot of fun. The story of SHINE mirrors the plight of the Wise Hall which does put an interesting twist on this production. The Wise Hall is a venue under pressure from gentrification, much like the Aristocrat Theatre which is featured in this show.  It is also an issue that faces many of our local venues like the Waldorf and the Railway Club.

SHINE features the story of the crumbling but historic Aristocrat theatre, Shine Mionne and her chosen family of sexpots and misfits struggle to save the theatre from imminent gentrification in the guise of smooth-talking money man Richard Suit. Along the way Frankie, the newbie actor from out of town, and Grace, the dimpled graduate student who can’t seem to keep her clothes on, are drawn into the vortex of life at The Aristocrat by a diva named Lulu. As Suit and Shine fight for control of the show, Lulu finds her leading-lady status jeopardized by Suit’s meddling and a series of whirlwind affairs threatens to throw the impending opening into chaos. Tassels and pasties and feathers SHINE tantalizes, teases and excites!  The show features 18 original songs by Cass King & John Woods of The Wet Spots which will run the gamut from cabaret to blues, soul and garage rock and a few things in between. Song of their song titles will give you an idea of what might be in store such as Large and In Charge, In Your Hand and The Perversions of Yesteryear.  SHINE we hear, outside of being smart and sexy, is the Muppet Show for grown-ups.  The show kicks off at 8:00 pm at the Wise Hall,1882 Adanac Street on July 6th and runs till July 16th. Tickets are $35 or you can purchase Cheap Tuesday tickets for $20 on July 12th, or you can go all out for the VIP experience and get front row seats to this show with complimentary champagne for $75. Which ever you choose, tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.

Vancouver’s 1st Pop Up Record Shop & Party March 31st

28 Mar

VinylRecordFairIn case you haven’t heard the news, record albums have made a resurgence in the last few years. I still have a personal collection stashed away with my first purchase ‘back in the day’ being Supertramp’s Breakfast in America’. An absolute classic of an album. Others tucked away in that box include Pat Benatar and The Cars both played at full volume and often. For those of a younger generation, this was in the days before everyone had a personal set of headphones and iPods.  If you played music on high volume, everyone in the house heard it.  Of course, hanging around listening to records with your friends as a group was a regular event. Not quite the solo endeavor it seems to be more now with the inception of iPods and smartphones.  There is an upcoming event that seeks to revive that passion for music and bringing people together who share a passion for albums and music. It’s called Vinyl, Art & Leisure and takes place March 31st from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at 1965 Main Street.  This event will also include art, records sales and/or swapping, affordable drinks, some DJs and well, of course, music.  Who knows what you might find.  Could be that album you’ve always been looking for and to attend, it’s free.
