13 Aug

Connect the Plots
Connect the Plots is a unique theatrical event created in collaboration with
The Cultch Youth Program, Environmental Youth Alliance, Theatre on Earth and a team of youth artists and environmentalists. Join the group in what is sure to be an unforgettable harvest celebration and performance taking place all over the picturesque gardens. As well as 200 individual garden plots, the Strathcona Community Garden features an orchard with over 30 kinds of fruit trees, wildlife habitat including a seasonal pond and native trees, BC’s largest public heritage apple espalier, bees, a Tibetan Buddhist Mandela herb garden, a green house and an Eco pavilion.

The group will transform the garden into a theatre lobby, complete with corn stalk walls, a lavender promenade, and an upright piano planted in the middle. Working with improvisation, masks, and puppetry, the young artists will lead audiences through various vignettes using the gardens and its inhabitants as inspiration.  Everyone is welcome to attend. This event is open to all ages. There is a suggested donation of $10, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Strathcona Community Garden is located at the corner of Prior and Hawks.  Theatre takes place at 7:00 p.m. on August 16, 17 and 18. Keep The Wise Alive August 9th

8 Aug

KeepWiseAlive2 The WISE Social and Athletic Club was created in 1958 as a members’ club for expatriates from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. It  was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1961 and purchased its home on Adanac in 1963. The WISE has hosted many events over the years including weddings, fundraisers, theatre, yoga, concerts and more recently home to some regulars like the Eastside Flea and Screaming Chicken Burlesque Society.

The Wise Hall is located at 1882 Adanac Street just off Venables next to some residential areas, so there is delicate balance between supporting a historic part of Vancouver and noise concerns from neighbouring residents. The Wise Hall has been working hard to address the concerns and will be holding a fundraiser to help them achieve their goals.   This Friday, August 9th, they will be holding a fundraiser “Keep The Wise Alive” which will feature The Odds, The Palomars, Big Top and the Screaming Chicken Burlesque Society.   Also on hand, a silent auction with prizes from Red Cat Records, Perryscope Concerts, Trees Ironworks, Feldman & Associates concert tickets and much more. Tickets are available for $25 in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or $30 at the door.    The venue has been an institution in East Van for over 50 years.  As such, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation will be dedicating a Places That Matter plaque to the Wise Hall at this Friday’s fundraiser. Come out and help Keep The Wise Alive!

The Cultch Gallery, 1895 Venables Street, invites you to their opening of Epiphany in her Lair with Friends by Tom McKinnon and their 2013/2014 gallery season launch on Thursday, August 1st from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Epiphany is a breathtaking series of life-size cedar sculptures, carved from trees which fell during the 2007 Vancouver storms. The series depicts plant spirits inspired by McKinnon’s nine years travelling in South America. With incredible physical presence, these statues reflect the role of narrative and image in the construction of cognition, identity, and belief.

To launch their new 2013/2014 season, The Cultch Gallery will also be announcing the names of all 23 artists that have been selected for this season. You are invited to come by for a lively night of art this Thursday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
