The Last 5 Years Opening June 19th At The Havana Theatre

Flickering Light Productions presents The Last Five Years at the Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive, from June 19th to June 28th.  This is a musical by Jason Robert Brown and was produced as an off-Broadway show in 2002.  The Last Five Years examines the five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a unique storytelling approach where Jamie travels chronologically in time, from the beginning of the relationship to the end, while Cathy travels backwards in time, from the end of the relationship to the beginning. Because Jamie and Cathy travel in opposing time lines, the only direct contact between the two occurs during their engagement/wedding song in “The Next Ten Minutes.” The songs are said to be melodic, engaging and full of wit. As well they present an intensely personal examination of the struggles of building a career and balancing it with a love life.  The Last Five Years runs at the Havana Theatre June 19, 20, 21 and 26, 27 and 28th at 8:00 pm. EAT.DRINK.PLAY. At The Firehall Arts Centre June 19th

The Firehall Arts Centre invites you to its annual fundraiser EAT.DRINK.PLAY. being held on Thursday, June 19th from 7 – 10 pm at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street.  You can expect an unforgettable evening that celebrates locally produced food, drink and performance. The event will showcase a selection of food from Gastown and Railtown’s burgeoning food scene graciously provided by Lily Mae’s, Peckinpah, Cadeaux Bakery, The Irish Heather, Salt Tasting Room, Bitter, Hogan’s Alley Cafe, Deacon’s Corner, Mahoney & Sons, Elephant and Castle, and Scent of a Sandwich. Tastings of micro brewery Parallel 49’s seasonal offerings will be available, plus vodka and crème de cassis from Odd Society Spirits.

The celebration of all things local will continue with a feature ‘taster flight’ of live theatre, dance and music performed around the Firehall building including an acoustic performance by rising theatre star and three-time Jessie Award nominee Kayvon Kelly (Chelsea Hotel) and a performance by Proud star Emmelia Gordon. Throughout the evening, you will also have the opportunity to bid on a fantastic range of items in a silent auction generously donated by local businesses, including Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, TELUS World of Science, PuSH International Performing Arts Festival, Vancouver Fringe Festival, SPUD Urban Delivery and Modo Car Co-Op.  All proceeds go toward helping the Firehall bring us fantastic cutting-edge theatre and dance to Vancouver. Tickets are available for $31 which includes food, drink tastings and a drink on arrival. Calling All Artists For Art Exhibition in Dude Chilling Park July 12th

Cheryl Cheeks and Marnie Hiebert invite you to submit your art for a one day art exhibition in Brewery Creek Community Garden in Dude Chilling Park on Saturday, July 12th.   The purpose of this art exhibition is to inspire dialogue about how art has a place in community spaces, such as gardens and parks. Their aim is to provide an opportunity for local artists to share and sell their work in a non-traditional gallery setting.

They are seeking submissions from visual artists, including sculptors, installations, painters, photographers, illustrators, fibre artists, etc. They ask that you “think big, think lush, think things that pop”. Large pieces are encouraged with a recommended minimum size of 2’ x 2’.   Easels will be provided to display your art. If you are interested in participating, you are asked to submit files for review in .jpg or .pdf format.  Also, when emailing them, include the titles of the work submitted and a short bio, including any necessary links to your work to: dudechillingartexchange@gmail.com.  Deadline for submissions is Friday, June 27th at midnight.

Artists will be asked to drop off and pick up their work the day of event. If you are interested in selling your work, you are welcome to remain in the garden for the duration of the exhibition. Any sales you make, are entirely yours to keep.

As to who is behind this great project, Marnie Hiebert is an abstract and figurative painter.  She has been part of several group shows exhibiting at many galleries and community events.  Cheryl Cheeks is a writer, editor, voice actor, photographer, and one of the creative minds behind the Broadway East Art Walk and the creator and curator of the Dude Chilling Art Exchange.   This art exhibition is funded by a grant provided by the Vancouver Foundation Neighbourhood Small Grant Program.

Flash Mob Sketching Party In Grandview Park on June 14th

Britannia Community Centre invites you to a Flash Mob Sketching Party on June 14th in Grandview Park.  The event is part of the city-wide annual Vancouver Draw Down 2014 and is called Flash Mob Sketchers.  For those wishing to participate, you can expect to be involved in a series of short drawing sessions led by guest artist, James Melcher, and musical accompaniment by the Carnival Band. In case you aren’t familiar with the Carnival Band, it is an East Vancouver brass and drum explosion of community spirited musicians that have a love for calypso, samba, jazz and funk. There will also be other local artists on hand to help transform the walkway at Grandview Park into a long winding “canvas”.  If you wish to participate, you are encouraged to bring easels, paper and pencils to sketch the local environment.   This is an all ages event and no experience is necessary. This is also a free event with no registration required. Just show up and sketch what you see. The Flash Mob Sketching Party gets under way at 1:00 p.m. and goes until 2:00 pm in Grandview Park on Commercial Drive (between William and Charles Streets).  Come out and draw!

The Art of Stealing At The Firehall Arts Centre May 28 – May 31

The Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street, presents The Art of Stealing beginning this Wednesday, May 28th.  This show premieres new work based on the action of stealing. It is choreographed and directed by Amber Funk Barton who is also one of the performers. A gang of six survivors work together and against each other, striving to manipulate, compete and endure in a mysterious, post-apocalyptic world. This exploration of transformation, survival and death from critically acclaimed contemporary dance company, the response, uses Amber Funk Barton’s  visceral, high-energy choreography to delve into the idea of stealing – what we take from each other, both physically and emotionally.  The gang struggle between conflict and cooperation, but the ultimate thief in life will outlast them all.  The Art of Stealing begins May 28th and runs to May 31st  tickets start at $27 and are available online at Firehall Arts Centre.

Art Exhibit Opening Reception: The Cultch Gallery May 14th

The Cultch Gallery invites you to the opening reception of Years of Explorations by Sarah Mousseau, Trees and Their Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoats by Sherry Cooper and Love, Decay, Repair by Michelle Sirios-Silver this Wednesday, May 14th.  Sarah Mousseau will be presenting woodcut prints inspired by Japanese aesthetics. Sherry Cooper’s mixed media collages take a unique look at trees, using various media to create golden art within the negative space of the intertwining branches. Michelle Sirois-Silver completes the exhibition with large hand-woven traditional rugs that blend Eastern Canadian methods with Western Canadian style and color to address themes of history and our desperate attempts to repair decay through beautification.  The opening reception takes place in The Cultch Gallery,1895 Venables Street, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you miss the opening reception, the art exhibit will run until May 31st.

Two For Tea At The Cultch May 13 – 18, 2014 “Complete & Utter Fun”

If you like a bit of British humour, you are invited to check out 2 for Tea starting Tuesday, May 13th at The Cultch. The show is brought to you by Aaron Malkin & Alastair Knowles. They are England’s critically acclaimed physical comedy duo. They will lure you into their “delightfully bizarre” world with their innocence and “endearing chemistry.” Their idiosyncrasies bring vitality to the mundane, turning an ordinary tea party into a fantastic wonderland of stimulation and play.  CBC describes it as “Complete and utter fun.” And if that doesn’t motivate you, here are some quotes from the 2013 Toronto Fringe Festival:

2 for Tea premieres at The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, in the Culture Lab Tuesday, May 13th at 9:00 pm and continues on May 14th at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 15th at 8:15 pm with a Talk Back Show, then on Friday, May 16th at 7:30 pm. The show wraps up on the weekend with shows Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $19.00 and available online at The Cultch. Note $10 tickets are available at the door only for Wednesday night’s show. Oh and I almost forgot, bring a teacup!

FREE BC Buds Spring Arts Festival Firehall Arts Centre May 7 – 11, 2014

The Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street, presents the 10th annual BC Buds Spring Arts Festival from May 7 th – 11th.   This festival explodes with distinctly Canadian new works by BC performance artists that explore the theme of Myth, Magic & Mystery. Over the course of the 5 days, you will find 30 different types of music, theatre, dance and interdisciplinary artists that will literally take over every conceivable nook and cranny of the Firehall Arts Centre.  It will be one giant arts factory with inventive and innovative site-specific performance.  The festival is free-to-the-public and runs May 7th from 8:00 – 10:00 pm,  May 8th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, May 9th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm  and May 11th from 1:00 – 6:00 pm.  For  a full rundown of all the events happening over the course of the festival, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Carnival For The Festival Thursday May 8th Fox Cabaret

You are invited to Carnival For the Festival being held on Thursday, May 8th at the Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street. The In-House Festival is an organization that creates intimate cultural spaces where all genres of music, dance, theatre, circus, magic, puppets, storytelling, spoken word, cabaret, burlesque and more are featured. They produce several shows throughout the year including dinner theatre events, a haunted house and others, but their signature event is the In the House Festival. On the weekend of June 6th – 8th, 2014, which will be their 11th year, they will host 3 days of  unique and captivating events AND it all takes place in the intimacy of someone’s home! 13 houses open up their doors and their yards to the 20 spectacular shows.

On May 8th, In House Festival is hosting a fundraiser “Carnival For The Festival” which is a New Orlean’s themed Carnival. You should expect to shake your booty to some amazing music, shop at the fantastic silent auction and support one of Vancouver’s treasures. You are encouraged to wear your carnival mask, as there will be a dance your face off for those that are so inclined. The most beautiful and creative mask will have a chance to win a full In the House prize pack which includes a weekend pass to the festival in June, a t-shirt, and an In the House CD.

The night inclues a line up of many great performers including:

Razzmajazz: RazzMaJazz is dedicated to performing traditional jazz in the New Orleans style. They are known as a fun and upbeat swinging band.

Sambata:  Based in Vancouver, Sambata is a percussion school and musical ensemble that plays a powerful and unique blend of music drawing on the rich traditions of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian popular and folkloric music.

Samba Fusion:  Samba Fusion International Dance Group performs several styles of dance and dance fusion including: Brazilian Samba, Samba, Reggae, Afro- Brazilian, Belly Dance, Gypsy, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Salsa/Latin/Reggae-ton, African, Polynesian, Bollywood andVegas Show Showgirls Cabaret.

The Soft Wind Quartet: The Soft Winds Quartet will delight you with their authentic New Orleans sound, excite you with their hot improvisation and get you dancing to the sounds of Bourbon street and Frenchman street.

Doors open at 6:00 pm for Carnival For The Festival and the show gets under way at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $40.00 and available through Brown Paper Tickets. Come out and support this great event.

Proud On Now At Firehall Arts Centre Until April 26th

Proud is a play written by Michael Healey about the Right Honourable Stephen Harper.   Honestly, who knew Stephen Harper could be so funny! Certainly not I. To me and many others the man is somewhat devoid of personality. Yes he’s a numbers man and many that deal with numbers, can be a bit dry. OK I know this is a generalization. But a play about Stephen Harper, I must say I was intrigued.  Not my favourite person for many personal reasons, but maybe someone who has helped keep the boat afloat during recent economic turbulence.  The play is about the man himself, his right hand man and Chief of Staff, Cary and his new MP Jisbella Lyth.  You will be drawn in from the very first line. The show is hilarious, sexy, witty and foul mouthed at times.  No matter what your politics, there is something from everyone here. Jisbella played by Emmelia Gordon does an amazing job as the new MP and Andrew Wheeler plays an impeccable Stephen Harper. If there is a morale to this story, it would be vote!

Proud is now at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street, until April 26th Tuesday – Saturday 4:00 pm & 8:00 pm shows and Sunday shows at 2:00 pm. Tickets range from $15 – $30.
