Greek-inspired play ‘Penelope’ Kicks Off The Cultch’s 40th Anniversary Season Sept. 25th

23 Sep

Penelope

The Cultch kicks off their 40th anniversary season with the Canadian premiere of Penelope this Wednesday, September 25th. The play is Enda Walsh’s critically acclaimed take on Homer’s The Odyssey brought to you by Rumble Theatre

It’s 11:30 a.m. and already 35 degrees. At the bottom of a drained swimming pool on a sun-scorched Greek island, four ridiculous men face their inevitable deaths, and lock horns over another man’s wife. They are the last of the hundred suitors vying for Penelope’s hand as she waits ten lonely years for her husband, Odysseus, to return from the Trojan Wars. They preen and posture and drink in a ludicrous ritual of courting and competition. But as the day wears on and the signs of Odysseus’s arrival grow more ominous, one of them must win Penelope’s love or they will all die trying! The play promises to be riveting, savage and a wildly funny take on the classic Greek myth.

Penelope runs from September 25th to October 13th at The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street. Tickets can be purchased online starting at $18, or by  phone at 604.251.1363, or in person at The Cultch Box Office, 1895 Venables Street.

If you’d like you check out a few of the characters, here are a couple of teasers. First meet Dunne, then meet Fitz, then come out to the show and see it live!

Children’s Hour Coming To Havana Theatre Sept. 19 – 28th

17 Sep

Children'sHour

Ghost Light Projects presents a provocative drama beginning this Thursday, September 19th at the Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive. Children’s Hour, originally written in 1934, was banned in five cities for its themes but found a home on Broadway.  Even though the topic of homosexuality was not permitted on Broadway at the time, audiences flocked to the show. The play examines the relationship between truth, power, and sexuality in a way that transcends the setting of the play. With school yard bullying, class privilege, and accusations of same sex desire providing the basis of this piece.

The journey of the Children’s Hour begins with a boarding school for girls run by Martha and Karen who have worked tirelessly and sacrificed to make their dream into a reality. Their vision is of an environment that fosters young women’s scholastic and personal development, readying them to enter a complex and changing world. However, a series of events leads one of the children to tell a vicious lie about the head mistresses. This act affected each of the characters in ways that will forever change them.

Directed by Randie Parliament and Greg Bishop, the production features a great line up of Vancouver talent.  Tickets range from $15 to $35 and can be purchased online through Brown Paper Tickets or by phone at 1-800-838-3006. Shows take place in the evenings at 8:00 p.m. with matinees on Saturday, September 21st and 28th at 2:00 p.m.

A group of neighbours in the Mount Pleasant area have been leading a charge to create an Art Walk in the Broadway East area. A number of businesses along the Broadway corridor between Prince Edward and Prince Albert will be providing some exhibition space within or outside of their premises.  A small scale pilot Art Walk was held on June 8th with great success. So this September 28th, they will be doing a large scale Art Walk.  The goal of the initiative is to bring new life to this area while supporting the local arts with the theme being Art in Unexpected Places. They are looking for bold artists in a variety of mediums including: paint, short film, sculpture, performance, temporary installation, balloon artists, sidewalk chalk artists, eco artists, window painting/decoration, you name it. The field is wide open.   If are interested in submitting your art, submit your contact information and 1 – 2 samples of your work or a link to your portfolio to: broadwayeastartwalk@gmail.com with the subject line “Broadway East Art Walk”.
