Plant Club With Wine – Figaro’s Garden Centre – September 7th

The first Friday of the month, Figaro’s Garden Centre, 1896 Victoria Drive, hosts Plant Club with wine.  You are invited to come hang out between 3:30 – 5:30 pm and talk plants while enjoying a glass of mind with other plant lovers.

Vancouver Fringe Festival – Various Venues – September 6th – 16th 

The Vancouver Fringe Festival is now under way until September 16th at various venues in the City including The Cultch, The Havana Theatre in Havana Restaurant and Your Open Closet on Commercial Drive to name a few.  Some may know that Havana Restaurant recently had a kitchen fire, but they’ve put out a note saying while the restaurant is still currently closed, the theatre IS OPEN for the Vancouver Fringe Festival line up.  To see the full line up, visit Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Quiz Show With Graham Clark – Fox Cabaret – September 7th

Looking for some good laughs at the end of the week? This Friday night, local comedian Graham Clark puts on a comedy show which features segments of various TV game shows. They are presented to you in one bizarre comedic event. Graham will be joined by comedians, Emmett Hall, Aaron Read, Katie Ellen Humphries and Christine Bortolin for this Friday’s show. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

River District – Savour Summer Series – September 8th 

You are invited to River District for an afternoon of free fun this Saturday.  The Savour Summer Festival happens in River District’s new Town Centre Plaza between the new Starbucks and Everything Wine. There will be free live music, entertainment, giveaways, a photo booth, local food trucks and more.  Some of the entertainment includes Raincity Blue,  Bobs & Lolo and Wooden Horsemen.  Activities get under way at 2:00 pm and go till 8:00 pm.  For those that wish to come early, note the first 200 people will receive a Savour Summer hat and a popsicle.

4th Annual Burlesque Marathon – Rio Theatre – September 8th

The 4th Annual Burlesque Marathon happens this Saturday at the Rio Theatre. There is a long line talent of burlesque talent set for this event. Doors open at 8:00 pm, festivities get under way at 9:00 pm.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Meet & Greet The Candidates – Commercial Street Café Sept. 8th & 9th

This weekend Commercial Street Café, 3599 Commercial Street, hosts the beginning of a series of meet and greets for those running for Mayor of Vancouver. This Saturday, come chat with independent candidate, Shauna Sylvester from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. On Sunday, another independent candidate, Kennedy Stewart will be on hand from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm to chat and answer questions about his platform.

Free Movie ‘Lady Bird’ – Britannia Community Centre – September 9th

Britannia Community Centre shows free movies on Sunday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. This week they are showing Lady Bird. All are welcome to enjoy the movie along with the free popcorn.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Looking to liven things up this weekend?  Breaking Boundaries is back at Café Deux Soleils this Saturday night. Doors at 8:30 pm, music gets under way at 9:00 pm. Cover is $10. Libra Room regularly hosts live music every night of the week. If it’s jazz your after, Sunday nights the Tangent Café regularly hosts live jazz music.  If you haven’t yet caught the documentary ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbour’ about the life of Mr. Rogers, it’s showing this weekend at the Rio Theatre Saturday at 1:15 pm and Sunday at 4:15 pm. Reviews we’ve heard it’s good, bit of a tear jerker, but good.

First Pick Handmade Returns To The Heritage Hall September 15 & 16, 2018

First Pick Fall Postcard Cover 2018First Pick Handmade returns to the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, September 15 & 16, 2018. This is a curated event showcasing 30 Canadian men’s and women’s fashion accessory designers.  First Pick Handmade will transform Heritage Hall into a 3,300-square foot pop up boutique department store. The event will feature long standing Canadian designers as well as some new additions including Anian Manufacturing with eco flannels hats and sweaters and Dogwood Denim Apparel with custom jeans for men and women.  Some designers on hand include Bianca Barr Designs, Daub and Design/Daub Active, Billy Would, LanaBetty, Quw’utsun’ Made, Frances Felt, Roberto Fioravanti and Toodlebunny. First Pick Handmade was created and curated by Janna Hurtzig  who is the founder/designer behind Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere. Hurtzig has been part of Vancouver’s handmade scene since 1988 in a variety of roles including co-organizer of Shiny, Muddy Fuzzy.  First Pick Handmade happens September 15th & 16th from11:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm each day. Admission is $3.00 at the door. Whether it’s to browse or buy, stop by and support our Canadian designers.

Commercial Street Café Hosts Meet & Greet With Candidates For Mayor of Vancouver

Commercial Street Café, 3599 Commercial Street, located in Cedar Cottage is hosting a number of meet and greet sessions this September with candidates running for Mayor of Vancouver. For those following politics, or event if you are not, this election is expected to be quite different. It is the first time in 30 years that an independent candidate could take the top job in our fair City.  We are pleased to hear that Commercial Street Café will be hosting a number of 2 hour sessions on various Saturdays and Sundays in September which will allow Vancouver residents to sit down and chat with the candidates.

This is your opportunity to get their position on issues first hand and how you think they’ll fare as Mayor.  We know housing and affordability are big topics, but there are many other issues that are near and dear to those that call Vancouver home.  We encourage you to be engaged, ask questions and make an informed decision on Election Day October 20th.  This date will be here before you know it.   We’ve set out the schedule of candidates and dates/times they’ll be on site at the Commercial Street Café. Jewellery Making Workshop At The Italian Cultural Centre Starting September 19th

The Italian Cultural Centre plays host to these workshops in which Roberto will help you create your own ring which you will take home with you after your last class.  Sessions happen September 19th, September 26th and October 3rd from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Mike Jackson East Van Business Owner Celebrates 30 Years In Business

IMG_2728 (2)Have you made your way to Les Faux Bourgeois, Heartbreaker Salon or Savio Volpe at the corner of Kingsway & Fraser?   If you have, did you catch Mike Jackson’s shop tucked next to Savio Volpe?

It’s a small shop with a retail component in the front and more space at the back for the custom work he does. Thus, the name Studiotique, studio in the back – boutique in the front. We recently started working with Mike and in doing so learned that this is one cool guy who has weathered many incarnations to stay in small business for 30 years. This is quite an accomplishment.

It all began in 1988. Mike was attending the University of Western Ontario, and launched Grubwear Clothing Co. He hit the streets to create and sell streetwear and action sports clothing from the back of his Honda Civic. Soon after, he drove West with his dog Memphis and a U-Haul to open Thriller, his first retail venture. Mike wanted to create bold graphic t-shirts and has a passion for sports, beach lifestyle, surf, skateboard and snowboarding.  He was driven to bring these passions together with a cutting-edge design and unique merchandise.  Grubwear with his now infamous TRI-G logo was born and has led him around the world with one of his passions, snowboarding. This in turn led him to launch Jackson Snowboards in 1991.  The business grew and evolved, Mike had distributors in 11 countries from Germany to Japan.  In 1996, he opened Thriller Shop in Kitsilano which became the head office for all his brands, Grubwear, Boris Brothers and Jackson Snowboards.   After 3 stores, 15 employees, Mike has scaled things back at his store at Kingsway & Fraser and focuses on his brands that he sells from his storefront as well as his online shop and doing custom work.

Now in 2018, things have come full circle for Mike.  To celebrate his 30 years in business, on August 1, 2018 Mike launched a KickStarter Campaign to create 30 special edition Jackson snowboards. He is working with Rob Dow, the creator of WIRED Snowboards in Vancouver who has 25 years of experience in design and production. Mike launched his Kickstarter campaign with the aim of raising $5,000. He reached that mark within 24 hour. It takes a lot to stay in business for 30 years.  Hats off to Mike who has reinvented himself many times over. Madonna comes to mind when we think of all his incarnations over the years. East Van Cider Fest August 22nd At The Wise Hall

EastVanCiderFest2018Liberty Merchant Company presents the 2nd Annual East Van Cider Fest on Wednesday, August 22nd at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. In case you hadn’t heard the news, some are touting cider as the new craft beer. However you slice it, cider makers are carving out a niche for themselves in this growing industry with some tasty offerings. The upcoming East Van Cider Fest is the perfect opportunity to taste cider, mead and other spirits from all over BC. The evening will also feature tasty bites from local businesses, a silent auction and door prizes which directly support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.   Tickets for the event are $24.99 and you are asked to bring a non-perishable food event with you. Your ticket includes 10 tasting tokens, a welcome cocktail and a keepsake glass. To purchase your tickets, visit any Liberty Wine Merchants location. Artful Sundays Happen In The Napier Greenway August 12th to September 2nd

Artful Sundays 2018 PosterArtful Sundays return to the Britannia Community Centre this summer.  If you aren’t familiar with this event, it is weekly outdoor visual art market which happens over 4 Sundays in the Napier Greenway.  The first event kicks off Sunday, August 12th from Noon to 5:00 pm and for the next 3 Sundays following. Each Artful Sunday brings a variety of local artists, workshops, artist demonstrations, live music and more. We see Clara Shandler, the Sidewalk Cellist will be on hand as will Wonky Clay Pots. Lots to do and see and it’s free to wander and take in the art that surrounds us.  The event takes place in the Napier Greenway at Napier Street & Commercial Drive from Noon – 5:00 pm each Sunday from August 12th to September 2nd.

ILiveInEastVan Tote Bags

ILiveInEastVanLogo2018If you’ve been following along with ILiveInEastVan, you will see we have launched a new logo recently pictured here. This now copyrighted design pays homage to the street signs we grew up with in East Van with a nod to the ever present crow in Vancouver.

On launching our new logo, we received some positive feedback. So we are excited to announce we have created a limited run of hand screened nylon tote bags with this original design.  These bags were hand screened here in East Vancouver by Mike Jackson of Grubwear in Mount Pleasant. If you don’t know Mike, he has been creating designs for street wear since 1988. Mike began working out of the back of his Honda Civic and is now situated at Fraser & Kingsway in East Vancouver.  Our aim in creating these bags is threefold.  One to support local East Van businesses in the design, sale and production of ILiveInEastVan bags. Second creating a sturdy reusable bag which we hope you will use often in place of single use plastic bags. Lastly, a bag that shows your pride in living in East Van.

If you wish to purchase the ILiveInEastVan Nytlon Tote Bag, it is currently available at Second Nature Home at 3565 Commercial Street in Cedar Cottage. ILiveInEastVan is now also on Etsy. We are offering free delivery of any purchase to residents of Vancouver until August 30th.

We are looking at other colours and styles of bags and are open to suggestions of what you’d like to see.  Canvas bags are in the works.  We’ve already had requests for t-shirts with the new logo. A production asking the big question ‘what does it mean to live’? The meaning will vary from one person to the next, but this show delves into the lives of Alison and Maddie who are at crossroads in life and rethinking their chosen demanding professions. Fraser River Walk – Dogwood Brewing – July 27th

You are invited to join the Sunset Artists in Communities Project ‘wayfinding/wandering’ for an evening walk to explore the Fraser River along the southern border.  Meeting spot is Dogwood Brewing at 7:00 pm. You are, of course, welcome to stop by early for a pre-walk pint from 6:00 pm onwards.

Adult Nights – Playland – July 27th

The last evening for Playland Nights happens this Friday for the 19+ crowd.  There will be beverages, alcoholic and non, midway games, rides, DJs spinning tunes with a definite party theme. There is also a burlesque show and the opportunity to test your lumber Jack/Jill skills with axe-throwing which we understand there’s an extra charge to participate in.  Tickets are $31 in advance or $34 at the gate.

Fundraiser: Families Together! – Wise Hall – July 29th

This Sunday, a group of local musicians including Professor Banjo, Ginalina Music and Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz will be hosting a fundraiser Families Together! The event is to help raise funds to support aid organizations helping family reunification at the US/Mexico border.   This issue is far away in distance, but not in the hearts and minds of many.  The event is a family oriented event, so along side the music, there will be a family craft centre hosted by The Learnary. Doors open at 1:30 pm and musical performances happen between 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Suggested donation is $10 – $50, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Breakfast & Blooms – Olive & Wild – July 29th

Il Fioraio Florist invites you to a floral workshop this Sunday at a great space on Main Street, Olive & Wild.  In this workshop you learn some basics of flower arranging along with some great tips.  Mimosa and light breakfast included.  You will leave with a beautiful centerpiece and the opportunity to shop at Olive & Wild after the workshop at a discount.  Cost of the workshop is $69. Textile Sale – Our Social Fabric – July 29th

Our Social Fabric is hosting another textile sale and they are over loaded with zippers, so will be giving some away for free.  If you need sewing supplies, DO check this spot out. They take new fabrics no longer needed to keep them from heading to the landfill. Prices are very reasonable. Sale happens this Sunday, July 29th from 10 am – 1 pm. at 1275 Venables Street at Clark in the Russell/Hendrix Building, 2nd floor, Unit #270.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you are a night owl, The Rio Theatre is showing a classic movie, Invasion of The Body Snatchers at 11:30 pm Friday night.   If you love the cats and burlesque, there’s a burlesque inspired FUNdraiser happening at The Rio Theatre Saturday night.
