Collingwood International Film Festival Starts July 3rd

CollingwoodIntlFilmFestivalCollingwood BIA and Community Policing Centre invite you to enjoy the warm summer evening with a free movie and popcorn. They are kicking off an International Film Festival on Friday, July 3rd. Bring down your blankets, lawn chairs and any other movie snacks you’d like to have and don’t forget the bug repellant.  Movies start at about 8:30 pm, but there will be some family friendly events prior to the movie. The Collingwood International Film Festival will feature four international movies over the course of the summer. We have set out the movies and locations below:

July 3rd – SPAIN  ‘The Book of Life’

July 24th – PHILIPPINES ‘Bob Ong’s ABNKKBSNPAL AKO ‘

Opening Reception At Studio 126 For Illustrations By Jordan Cooper July 2nd

IllustrationsStudio 126 at 126 East Pender Street is a very cool studio with a variety of locally made goods including reclaimed furniture, handmade items by local artisans including Brand & Iron, Woodlot, Hobo Woodworks, Say It With Sarcasm, Sue Griese Ceramics, LISSU Linen and East Van Jam. On Thursday, July 2nd, Studio 126 and Paris Forrer will be hosting an Opening Reception of Illustrations by Jordan Cooper. Jordan Cooper is a self-taught illustrator from New Westminster, BC and began drawing at a young age. He mainly uses graphite on whatever paper he’s fond of at the time. This is Jordan’s first show that will showcase a variety of his illustrations.  The reception kicks off at 7:00 pm and runs till 10:00 pm.  Admission is free, but an RSVP is requested. There will also be a cash bar with beer, wine & vodka lemonade for the Opening Reception.  Lemonade is provided courtesy of The Juice Truck.  You can also expect a musical appearance by Ben Rowley.   If you miss the Opening Reception, Illustrations  will be showing until July 26th and can be viewed Wednesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

East FEAST: A Micro Funding Event For Artists At Britannia Community Centre June 28

EastFEASTEast FEAST  (Funding Emerging Artists through Sustainable Tactics) is a micro-funding event that supports artists living and working in the neighbourhoods of Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona. East FEAST is hosting a Feast on Sunday June 28th at the Britannia Community Centre from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. During the course of the event, you will have the opportunity to meet and listen to 3 artists, each of whom will make a 5-7 minute presentation.  At the end of the FEAST, attendees will vote on which artist they would like to see funded.  The chosen artist will receive a grant from the funds raised by the event ticket sales of up to $1000.  Tickets for the event are $20.00 per person and available in person at Britannia Info Centre, 1661 Napier Street or by phone at 604.718.5800 (1). Come out and support the local arts.

Trout Lake Outdoor Summer Concert Series July 8 – August 26, 2015

TroutLakeConcertSeriesThe Trout Lake Community Center, 3360 Victoria Drive, begins their weekly free outdoor Summer Concert Series Wednesday, July 8th at 6:30 p.m. with the Brock House Band. This is a 17 piece big band with a vocalist style from the 1940-1970s and includes a dance performance by Dez Dancer during their break. The following week, July 15th you will find Silk Road performing. Up next on July 22nd the Soda Crackers hits this stage with vintage country, jazz and roots music.

July 29th brings Group Truva to the stage with a combination of traditional Turkish and international influences. On August 5th, Caracus will explode on stage with Ska beats, jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms along with tons of Latin mojo for what is expected to be a lively show. On August 12th, the Rio Samaya Band brings you original songs and poetry that combine Latin, reggae and rhumba.  Deanna Knight & The Hot Club of Mars will travel back in time on August 19th and bring you sounds from the early jazz era of the 1920s and 1930s. Lastly, on August 26th Kara-Kata Afrobeat Group brings you a mix of many sounds including reggae, Calypso, gospel, modern funk, jazz, blues, salsa and more.

All performances will be held on the East side of Trout Lake Community Centre. There will again be a BBQ and a kids art station.  You are invited to bring a blanket, bring the family, your friends and come enjoy the music. Dancing is encouraged. Note, any rained out concerts will be held in the Grandview Room.

East Vancouver Garden Tour Sunday June 21st

EVGardenTour6Well there will certainly be no lack of things to do in East Van this Sunday. There will be Car Free Day on Commercial Drive and Main Street, Community Day at the York Theatre, the Vancouver Farmers Market in Mount Pleasant and a personal favourite the East Van Garden Tour.  We had the pleasure of taking this tour last year through Strathcona along with some torrential weather, but that didn’t deter us.  It was wonderful to see what people were doing with their gardens.  Whether you have a home, patio garden or community garden, the East Van Garden Tour is a great source of inspiration and ideas.

This year, the East Van Garden Tour will focus on the area just west of Commercial Drive between Commercial Drive and Clark Drive.  If you haven’t participated in this event previously, it really is something to see. First up purchase your ticket(s) at Figaro’s Garden Centre, 1896 Victoria Drive or by contacting the Britannia Community Services Centre, 1661 Napier Street, in person or by phone 604-718-5800. Tickets are $12 each.  On the day of the event, show up at Figaro’s Garden Centre to check in, pick up your tour map from 10:00 am onwards and then head off to the gardens.  The tour is popular and has sold out in previous years, so we recommend that you get your tickets in advance.  People who attend the tour will also get a one-time 20% discount at Figaro’s starting on the day of the tour through to July 1st (Canada Day).  Note: This is a very walkable tour, but it is not wheelchair accessible and pets are not allowed.

We have included a few photos from last year’s East Van Garden Tour which include a slight detour to the community gardens in Strathcona which is a real treat and a great spot for a picnic. A highly recommended detour.

Community Day At The York Theatre Sunday June 21

CommunityDayYorkYou are invited to attend Community Day at the York Theatre, 639 Commercial Drive, this Sunday, June 21st.   While you are on the Drive enjoying Car Free Day, make your way down to the York Theatre and join them for some family fun.  They will have free entertainment, hot dogs, popcorn, prizes AND you will get to watch Women’s World Cup Final 16 soccer on the big screen. Doors open at 11:00 am. There will be a traditional welcome at 11:30 am and at 12:15 pm the entertainment and music kicks off. At 1:30 pm, they will be showing the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final 16 Soccer Game. To reserve your spot(s) RSVP here.

Free Daily Yoga At Dude Chilling Park

YogaYoga instructor Solomon Montijo, along with ten other teachers, hosts free classes daily at 10 am and 6 pm in Dude Chilling Park also known as Guelph Park, 2390 Brunswick Street.  If you want to participate, simply bring:

>  water bottle
>  yoga mat
>  towel or blanket

Solomon encourages people to donate if they can afford it, but it’s not required to attend. Everyone is welcome. As it is International Yoga Day this Sunday June 21st, there will be a special yoga class and potluck. The day begins with a regularly scheduled hatha yoga class at 10:00 am to 11:15 am. At 11:30 am there will be a Super Special Yoga Day Class including asana, pranayama, meditation and deep relaxation which runs till 1:00 pm. After that, the potluck begins. Le Marche St. George Hosts Evening of Oysters, Wine & Sausages June 20

FundraiserPlayground_nobleedLe Marché St. George, 4393 St. George Street, is hosting an evening of Oysters, Wine and Sausages on Saturday, June 20th.  This event is to raise funds for the Little Mountain Playground and all proceeds will go towards building an inclusive playground for kids in the neighbourhood.  You can expect an evening of beautiful food and wine provided by Curious Oyster, D-Original Sausages and BC Wine Studio.   The event gets under way at 7:30 pm and goes to 10:00 pm weather permitting. Tickets are available on Eventbrite for $85.  We expect this event to sell out.  So if interested, be sure to pick up your ticket(s).

Italian Day Returns To Commercial Drive Sunday June 14

ItalianDay2015ArtIn East Van, we are fortunate to be home to some great community events. One of our favourites happens this Sunday, Italian Day.  This is your chance to experience everything Italian from the food, to the music to the culture. The 5th Annual Italian Day returns to the Drive with this year’s theme being ART.  So you can expect to find Italian art showcased or you can make your own. The Britannia Community Centre will be hosting an interactive photo-art project between Noon and 3:00 pm in the Britannia Courtyard. As well, I’m Impressed Paper Arts Ltd. will have supplies available so you can create your own art.

The Drive which is very much alive most days of the week will be transformed for Italian Day where you will be able to walk the Drive from Broadway to Venables and find over 100 merchants and guest vendors, a line up of food trucks and carts, more than 20 restaurant patios and an array of things to see from Italian honey bees to classic cars and motorcycles. The Italian Cultural Centre will be hosting live opera at the Grant Street music stage as well as jazz with Cory Weeds.  Of course, you can expect to find Federico Fuoco center stage drawing a crowd as always at the 2nd Avenue Main Stage along with Carmelina Cupo.

For the kids, there will be lots to see and do including arts and crafts in the Little Italy Kids Zone and Funswing amusement rides in Grandview Park as well as balloon twisting and face painting. Other street activities also include the Whitecaps/BMO Fun Zone with kicking cage as well as the Car2Go sponsored Bocce Court. Some new additions to this year’s festivities include a new third stage at Grandview Park which will showcase Italian martial arts demonstrations by Blood and Iron as well as improv by Theatre Temp from Templeton Secondary School and Marionette Puppet Shows by Carnival Sized Cinnamon Hearts. Opening Ceremonies kick off the event at Noon on the Main Stage at Second Avenue and festivities run till 8:00 pm.  There will certainly be something for everyone here. Come out and celebrate all things Italian!

Rescue Me: Genie Rottweiler Shepherd Cross Looking For Her Forever Home

GenieSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful girl named Genie. Genie came to the Vancouver SPCA by way of the Drives for Lives program. She is a 5 year old Rottweiler German Shepherd cross and her friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she will have you wrapped around her paw in no time.   Genie is a cheeky playful girl with personality plus.  She lived on a reserve in Prince Rupert and has had a few litters and although a fantastic mom to all her pups, her friends at the SPCA now think it’s time for her to be babied a bit.  Genie loves people of all shapes and sizes. She can be a bit reactive to other dogs so she needs a dog-savvy guardian who is able to work with her on this. Genie has likely never lived inside of a home environment, but she has quickly discovered that she loves everything about it. She particularly likes tossing her toys around the SPCA’s reception area and rolling around their couch.  Nothing is off limits for Genie and she is quite comical at times so sure to bring her new guardians lots of joy. The Vancouver SPCA does feel her new guardians will need to work with her on some basic obedience training and gradual departure exercises as she may initially be anxious in her new environment. She is known to be an escape artist, so leash walks or a home with a fully fenced yard is a must.  Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA also think it’s best that she be the only pet in the household so she get the undivided love and attention she deserves.  If you think you can give Genie a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you.
