A Call To Artists for Broadway East Art Walk, September 28th

2 Sep

BroadwayEastArtWalkSept.28th

A group of neighbours in the Mount Pleasant area have been leading a charge to create an Art Walk in the Broadway East area. A number of businesses along the Broadway corridor between Prince Edward and Prince Albert will be providing some exhibition space within or outside of their premises.  A small scale pilot Art Walk was held on June 8th with great success. So this September 28th, they will be doing a large scale Art Walk.  The goal of the initiative is to bring new life to this area while supporting the local arts with the theme being Art in Unexpected Places. They are looking for bold artists in a variety of mediums including: paint, short film, sculpture, performance, temporary installation, balloon artists, sidewalk chalk artists, eco artists, window painting/decoration, you name it. The field is wide open.   If are interested in submitting your art, submit your contact information and 1 – 2 samples of your work or a link to your portfolio to: broadwayeastartwalk@gmail.com with the subject line “Broadway East Art Walk”. Note: all ages are welcome, in any degree or ability.  Deadline for submitting your expression of interest is September 10th.

If you are not an artist, but would like to participate in this fabulous event, they are also on the hunt for volunteers, drop them an email at the address above.

Rescue Me: Brandy Looking For Her Forever Home

16 Aug

BrandyPic2

Brandy is a goofy 5 year old female pitbull mix who loves other dogs and is great with people. She is house broken, loves to walk, swim and play and is easy to walk. She is also a big fan of snuggles, belly rubs and playing with toys.  She needs a home that can offer physical and mental stimulation and would be best suited to a home without cats and with older children.   Brandy has watched many dogs come into the Vancouver SPCA and be adopted while she sits and waits for her  forever guardians to arrive.  The SPCA cannot believe this affectionate love bug is still in their care.   If you are interested in giving Brandy her forever home, or even a foster home while she waits for her forever home, the Vancouver SPCA would love to hear from you. To learn more about Brandy, contact the Vancouver SPCA at T: 604.879.7721 or by email at Vancouver@spca.bc.ca

As always, we are grateful to those willing to share this information with others so Brandy can find her forever home.

UPDATE: Brandy has found her forever home. She’s a very happy girl.

Likemind Vancouver Networking Event Friday, August 16th

14 Aug

Likemind

Likemind is a monthly networking event for creative professionals and anyone else that wants to show up.  The events are held at different coffee shops all around Vancouver. Originally started in New York City, the event is called “Likemind” and has spread to over 30 cities around the world, taking place monthly on the third Friday of every month.  The events are an excuse, the organizers say, to slow down, take a moment and connect with “Likeminded” people over a great cup of coffee, which is something we don’t always make time for.

The next Likemind networking event is taking place this Friday at Kafka’s Coffee & Tea, 2525 Main Street (at Broadway) between 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. If you are unable to attend this month’s event, you can follow them on Twitter @LikemindVan for details of their next event.

Connect The Plots: Outdoor Theatre at Strathcona Community Garden Aug 16 – 18

13 Aug

Connect the Plots
Connect the Plots is a unique theatrical event created in collaboration with
The Cultch Youth Program, Environmental Youth Alliance, Theatre on Earth and a team of youth artists and environmentalists. Join the group in what is sure to be an unforgettable harvest celebration and performance taking place all over the picturesque gardens. As well as 200 individual garden plots, the Strathcona Community Garden features an orchard with over 30 kinds of fruit trees, wildlife habitat including a seasonal pond and native trees, BC’s largest public heritage apple espalier, bees, a Tibetan Buddhist Mandela herb garden, a green house and an Eco pavilion.

The group will transform the garden into a theatre lobby, complete with corn stalk walls, a lavender promenade, and an upright piano planted in the middle. Working with improvisation, masks, and puppetry, the young artists will lead audiences through various vignettes using the gardens and its inhabitants as inspiration.  Everyone is welcome to attend. This event is open to all ages. There is a suggested donation of $10, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Strathcona Community Garden is located at the corner of Prior and Hawks.  Theatre takes place at 7:00 p.m. on August 16, 17 and 18. Reservations are encouraged by emailing RSVP@thecultch.com.
