Rescue Me: Check Out These Foster Kids Looking For A New Home

24 Feb

GeorgiaWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a couple of animals in foster care. First off, there is Georgia who is a 2 year old Labrador Retriever crossed with Pit Bull Terrier.  Georgia is a sweet, smart and energetic girl. She loves playing with other dogs and could easily live with a canine companion that has her rough and tumble style of play, but cats likely not.  She’s a little too into them. Georgia’s friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she is best suited for a house with a yard as well as an adult only home.  Ideally, Georgia needs people that will give her a fair bit of time and attention and initially shouldn’t be left home alone for more than 3-4 hours. This lovely girl recently tore her ACL and has had surgery to repair it, so needs a home with some TLC.  If you think you could give this fire ball of energy a forever home and some time to recuperate, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. You can find them at 1205 East 7th Avenue or by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.

Next up, we’d like to introduce you to Ninja. Ninja is a 7 year old black short hair cross cat and her friends at the Vancouver SPCA would REALLY like you to meet this lovely girl. She is a favourite of the staff and volunteers at the SPCA.  This girl has a heart of gold and an over the top affectionate nature. They’d really like to see her find her forever home. As she’s an older black cat, she tends to be easily overlooked. This lovely girl was surrendered when her guardian could not find pet friendly housing. This home was already her second home, so her friends at the Vancouver SPCA are really hoping her next home will be her last. There are few things that Ninja loves more than people and water. She’s often found pawing in her water bowls and keeping people entertained with her antics. We hear that she takes breaks from her water pawing to enjoy a major cuddle session complete with head butts. One minor disclosure, the staff at the Vancouver SPCA have noticed that Ninja is not really into the other cats, they are recommending she be the only feline in the home.  She’s lived solely indoors and they feel it should remain that way. Common in older cats, Ninja is in the early stages of renal disease so regular vet check-ups are important. Ninja has so much love to offer and she’d really love a forever home. If you think you Ninjacould give this sweet girl a forever home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. You can find them at 1205 East 7th Avenue or by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.

East Van GoGos Benefit Concert & Brunch October 18 Trout Lake Community Centre

12 Oct

EastVanGoGoLogoThe East Van GoGos invite you to a Benefit Concert & Brunch on Sunday, October 18th at Trout Lake Community Centre.  What is a GoGo? Gogo is a Zulu word meaning “grandmother”. The Greater Van Gogos which includes chapters in various parts of the Lower Mainland are grandmothers and ‘grandmothers’ working in groups to support African grandmothers raising a generation of children orphaned by AIDS. This network of grandmother groups in south western BC are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

In March 2006, Stephen Lewis, a Canadian humanitarian and former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, issued a call to Canadian grandmothers to bond with their African counterparts. In his travels, Lewis noticed the phenomenal grandmothers who had buried their adult children and stepped in to raise the orphans left behind. They needed money for school fees and uniforms, food and other necessities. In the Vancouver area, three women answered the call. They invited a few others and launched Greater Van Gogos in the summer of 2006 with four groups. Although grandmothers in Africa’s many countries are addressed in different ways – ja ja in Uganda, sho sho in Kenya or nyana in Zambia – the word gogo felt right. Many years later, there are 20 groups registered with approximately 600 members from Vancouver and the surrounding areas. Together they have raised more than $1 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The funds are distributed to community level projects supporting grandmothers and the children in their care in 15 sub-Saharan African countries.

The brunch on Sunday, October 18th is a fundraiser for the East Van GoGos which will feature a musical performance by the Soda Crackers.  The group consists of Sue Malcolm, Don Fraser and Stu MacDonald who are also members of Highrise Lonesome.  To find out what they will be playing, you’ll just have to come out and listen. It could be country, bluegrass, blues, jazz or some western swing.  Brunch will be provided along with coffee, tea and juice. Suggested donation is $25. To order your ticket contact Sharon at T: 604-254-4071 or eastvangogos@gmail.com. The brunch takes place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Grandview Room at the Trout Lake Community Centre, 3360 Victoria Drive. The music gets under way at 12:15 pm. Come out and support these great GoGos!

Rescue Me: Arwin Labrador Retriever Cross Is Looking For Her Forever Home

20 Jul

ArwinSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful girl named Arwin. Arwin is a black female Labrador Retriever Cross who is just over 3 years old.  She is an active and exuberant lab with a super sweet disposition. Unfortunately this girl spent some time being tethered in a yard prior to being brought to the SPCA.    Thus, Arwin needs a home where she can get lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation.  This girl loves her toys and has a very keen sense of smell.  Arwin needs a saavy dog guardian that can give her some structure and positive based training to improve her doggy manners. She has been socialized with other dogs, but needs continued socialization so she learns to play well with others.  Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA do not believe she would be suited to having cats in the home. If you think you can give Arwin a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. You can reach the Vancouver SPCA by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email atvancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we are grateful for those that share this information.

UPDATED: July 29, 2015 Arwin has found her forever home.

Rescue Me: Genie Rottweiler Shepherd Cross Looking For Her Forever Home

10 Jun

GenieSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful girl named Genie. Genie came to the Vancouver SPCA by way of the Drives for Lives program. She is a 5 year old Rottweiler German Shepherd cross and her friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she will have you wrapped around her paw in no time.   Genie is a cheeky playful girl with personality plus.  She lived on a reserve in Prince Rupert and has had a few litters and although a fantastic mom to all her pups, her friends at the SPCA now think it’s time for her to be babied a bit.  Genie loves people of all shapes and sizes. She can be a bit reactive to other dogs so she needs a dog-savvy guardian who is able to work with her on this. Genie has likely never lived inside of a home environment, but she has quickly discovered that she loves everything about it. She particularly likes tossing her toys around the SPCA’s reception area and rolling around their couch.  Nothing is off limits for Genie and she is quite comical at times so sure to bring her new guardians lots of joy. The Vancouver SPCA does feel her new guardians will need to work with her on some basic obedience training and gradual departure exercises as she may initially be anxious in her new environment. She is known to be an escape artist, so leash walks or a home with a fully fenced yard is a must.  Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA also think it’s best that she be the only pet in the household so she get the undivided love and attention she deserves.  If you think you can give Genie a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. You can reach the Vancouver SPCA by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we are grateful for those that share this information.
