Leg Up! – Moberly Arts Centre – February 15th & 16th

Dezza Dance and Moberly Arts and Culttural Centre have partnered with emerging dance artists to bring you Leg Up!.  Five choreographers bring their high energy performance to the stage this Friday and Saturday night at the Moberly Arts Centre, 7646 Prince Albert Street. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. To get advance tickets, visit Dezza Dance.

The Gravel-Aires & The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio – Café Deux Soleil – Feb. 16th

Café Deux Soleils hosts some great live music this Saturday night with The Gravel-Aires and The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio. They will be featuring roots, blues, bluegrass and folk music.  Cost is $5-$10 at the door. Show gets under way at 9 pm.

Documentary ‘Free Solo’  – Rio Theatre – February 16th & 18th

Oscar nominated documentary FREE SOLO comes to the Rio Theatre this weekend for 2 showings.  This is a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber who prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock, the 3,000 foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope. We hear this is an edge-of-your seat thriller.  Free Solo shows Saturday, February 16th at 12:15 pm and Monday, February 18th at 3:20 pm.

Free Family Fun – Britannia Community Centre – February 18th

You are invited to the Britannia Community Centre for an afternoon of free family fun.  Lots on offer with ice-skating, kids craft zone, face painting, balloon twisting, hot drinks and treats.  Activities take place between 1:00 and 3:30 pm.

Family Day Celebration  – Trout Lake Community Centre – February 18th

Aiyacarumba Trout Lake Community Centre has a whole rang of free activities planned for Family Day this coming Monday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  There’s an Art Lab, Cooking Demonstration, Tai Chi Demonstration, Dance Performances, crafts and much more.  Much Ado About Nothing – The Cultch 

Much Ado About Nothing Set in a mesmerizing theatrical world evoking Colonial North Africa, this serious and sublimely ridiculous story of soldiers in love and women confined by tradition—is a bold and playful romp through the extremes of desire and ambition, loyalty, and redemption. This the last weekend to catch the all female cast is part of The Cultch’s Femme Series.

Nasty Women Comedy – Biltmore Cabaret – February 18th

JFL Northwest presents Nasty Women Comedy this Monday evening. This  is an improv group consisting of some of Vancouver’s top female comedians.  A show that will leave you feeling fired up. Show gets under way at 8:30 pm

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market 10 am – 2 pm. Oh Man! Is Coming To The Drive Coffee Bar March 1st & 3rd, 2019

Jo Dworschak, creator and producer of Story Story Lie, has put together a multimedia monologue about a mom trying to overcome her fear of men before having one.  With some assistance from TJ Dawe, a respected playwright, actor and director, Jo Dworschak has put together this autobiographical production which features some problematic relationships with men in her family life, to learn she’s pregnant and having a boy.  Her Production Oh Man! has won Best Solo Show at the Montana Fringe Festival.  Jo bills this show as “humorous, heart warming and the perfect night out for the parent”.  The production is coming to an intimate venue this March at The Drive Coffee Bar on Friday, March 1st and Sunday, March 3rd.  Tickets are $12 and available through Eventbrite or at the door. Show kicks off at 8:00 pm.

Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews Much Ado About Nothing On Now At The Cultch Until February 16th

muchadoaboutnothingThe Cultch’s Femme Series is currently featuring Shakespeare’s classic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. You might be thinking, as I was, that it’s unlike The Cultch to put on this type of production; but this is not the classic show you know and love: it’s classic chic. Brought to the stage by Classic Chic Productions, Much Ado About Nothing is a bold and playful romp through the extremes of desire and ambition, loyalty and redemption.

Based in Vancouver, the not-for-profit theatre company is known for their all female cast and crew, believing that there are great male and female roles in theatre that appeal to all human beings. By casting women in male parts they are creating a forum for women to explore these possibilities as well as develop their acting, designing and directing skills. It has been the experience of Director Rebecca Patterson “that gender-blind casting speaks to a diverse audience—straight and queer, men and women—and is a true reflection of our complex contemporary community”.

In Much Ado About Nothing, we see female and male roles that are firmly rooted in tradition. However, whether intentionally or not, performing Shakespeare with an all female cast is a delightful play on these gender roles that Shakespeare himself seemed to enjoy, as evident in plays like The Twelfth Night and Macbeth. What’s more, as his plays were originally performed by an all male cast – since women were not allowed in the public sphere – this provides another subtle layer of fun in Classic Chic’s production.

East Van Artist and Crow Whisperer, June Hunter is hosting a Valentine’s Studio Sale this weekend. If you are looking for something for your Valentine, or maybe a birthday gift, June will have an array of beautiful items perfect for gift giving. June’s studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale happens Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Heart Garland Workshop – Britannia Community Centre – February 9th

Looking to make something personal for someone this Valentine’s, Britannia Community Centre is hosting a Heart Garland Workshop this Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This is a free workshop facilitated by East Van artist Paula Luther.  All materials are supplied.

Backyard Composting – Trout Lake Community Centre – February 10th

Free Family Concert w/ Will’s Jams – Firehall No. 1 – February 10th

There will be a free family concert at the Firehall No. 1 in Strathcona with music by Will’s Jams at 2:00 pm.  Donations will be collected for the Fire Fighters Burn Fund.

Valentine’s Party/Dance – Alpen Club – February 10th    

If you love ballroom dancing and want to kick off Valentine’s a little early, you may wish to check out the Valentine’s Dance Party at The Alpen Club (Victoria & 33rd Avenue) this Sunday night. Admission is $12 and includes 1 hour group lesson, dance party to follow. Doors open at 6:30 pm and goes till 11:00 pm.

June Hunter Valentine’s Studio Sale February 9th and 10th

East Van artist, June Hunter, is hosting her Valentine’s Studio Sale this weekend. If you have a special someone to buy for who is a nature lover, then this is the spot for you. June has again been working on some new colourful designs. This weekend you can expect to find a host of beautiful items including heart shaped jewellery, cusjunehuntervalentine_cookies_1024x1024hion covers, totes, small prints, iPad covers, greeting cards, note pads, large scale wall art, tiles and much more.  As you will notice, nature and/or wildlife is a theme through all of her work.  In celebration of Valentine’s Day, heart shaped cookies will be available for nibbling and Geordie her rescue dog will be ready to greet you.  June Hunter’s studio is located at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale takes place Saturday, February 9th and Sunday, February 10th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews Power Ballad on Now Until January 26th At The Cultch

powerballadPerformed for the first time in Canada, Power Ballad is a shocking and explosive work that explores gendered narratives and the hidden ideologies in the language we use. Created and performed by Julia Croft, this one woman show all the way from New Zealand is loud and disturbing. But that’s the whole point – it’s a live art exhibit of feminist rage that seeks to deconstruct sexist linguistics and find a new articulation of femaleness.

This 50-minute show is not for everybody, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in going to read up on it beforehand so as not to be utterly confused. Nevertheless, Croft bravely confronts seemingly immovable patriarchal structures in this rallying production which she states “is about finding the cracks where resistance can begin”.

Mixed Media Workshop – Heart Art – February 10th At Studio 580

loveartLocal artist, Tana Lynn, is hosting a mixed media workshop on Sunday, February 10th. The aim of this workshop is for you to create a personal gift of art for your loved one.  Something personal, made with heart is the way Valentine’s Day should be.   In this workshop, Tana Lynn, will lead you through a project that the whole class makes together, thus it will be the same piece. After that, you will be free to create your own unique art piece. Thus, you will be leaving with not 1, but 2 pieces of art.  No experience is necessary for this workshop and all supplies will be included. Cost is $85.00 and registration is available through Eventbrite. Event takes place at Studio 580 at 580 Clark Drive.

Circle Game: Reimagining the Music of Joni Mitchell January 12th to February 9th At The Firehall Arts Centre

circle game_image1_kimmy-benjamin-adriana-samantha-david-scott_credit stephen rutherford Firehall Arts Centre is bringing back to the stage the music of a Canadian icon and renowned singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell, with the production of Circle Game: Reimagining The Music of Joni Mitchell.  Artistic Producer and local talent, Donna Spencer, brings this energetic musical experience featuring six quadruple-threat talents to the stage. Together they play eighteen instruments, creating modern variations on themes by Joni Mitchell.  For those that don’t know, Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential female recording artists of the late 20th century. She often featured social and environmental issues in her music. Mitchell’s music stands the test of time and is once again the voice of a generation. Some examples include the heartbreak of a failed love affair in “River”, the fear of imminent ecological disaster in “Big Yellow Taxi”, and the promise of a generation gathering to ‘get back to the garden’ in “Woodstock” are topics that resound as heavily today as they did fifty years ago. Circle Game runs from January 12th to February 9th, 2019. Tickets are available online at The Firehall Centre with several Pay What You Can Performances on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.

Pitch, Bitch And Ditch At The Cultch January 14th “The Dragon’s Den Of Theatre”

If yes, then you may wish to check out Pitch, Bitch and Ditch happening Monday, January 14th at The Cultch.  Do you have a great idea for show?  Do you want to have a say in what type of productions you’d like to see on stage? Creators, Pippa Mackie and Kim Senklip Harvey, aim to highlight the strength and power of female-identifying voices and experiences. During the course of the evening, they will guide attendees through a lively banter and debate on a variety of possible topics.  No idea is off limits, no suggestion taboo, you are to let your imagination run wild and oh, the bar will be open should that help you loosen your tongue just a little.  There general theme goes like this:

PITCH
Bring your ideas —
pitches are anonymous, so no judgement!

BITCH
Kim and Pippa discuss the pitches, and debate whether they have potential as plays or not!

DITCH
The power is in your hands
—audience members vote on which pitches are ditched and which ones have promise!

Tickets for the event are $10 and available online through The Cultch.  If you are interested generally in Women In The Arts, there is mixer by that name the same evening before the show from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in The Cultch Lobby. It is free attend the mixer.

Mrs. Krishnan’s Party At The Cultch January 15 to February 3, 2019

We personally know this for many reasons, a best friend of many years that’s Indian, living in SE Vancouver, living across river from the Riverside Banquet Hall and down the way from two large banquet halls.   There are thrown some big parties full of colour and life in all of these halls.  Then there is of course Diwali with a million lamps floating on a river and fireworks to wake the dead. It doesn’t stop there though, then there’s Holi with an explosion of colour and joy and massive dry cleaning bills. And of course Onam, a harvest festival which we hear might be one of the craziest of them all.  Come January 15th, you are invited to participate in Mrs. Krishnan’s Party, a spontaneous theatrical celebration.
The production features Mrs. Krishnan’s boarder, an overzealous wannabe DJ named James, who has invited a few friends into the back room of the corner shop as a special surprise to celebrate Onam and the return home of her son. But when strangers turn up (you the audience) and settle in, Mrs. K has no choice but to throw the party of her life.  Over one evening, Mrs. Krishnan’s Party magically transforms strangers into friends with a little Daal, a little dancing and some laughs.
