The Magic of Collaborative Public Art – Monday May 11 at John Oliver Secondary School

PublicArtSouthHillYou are invited to take part in a visual presentation hosted by Shary Bartlett at John Oliver Secondary School, 530 East 41st Avenue (at Fraser Street) on May 11th.  Witness the power of the arts to create beauty and foster neighbourhood transformation.  Come and be inspired by local artist Shary Bartlett who will  highlight over a decade of multigenerational and multicultural collaborative community arts projects.  For this presentation, residents of South Hill and various artists have come together to create interactive web stories, huge photographic murals, colourful painted walls, street mosaics, sand collages, hand-cranked prints, a fruit and vegetable mandala as well as many other projects.  On May 11th, you are invited to come see the amazing public art that has been created in South Hill.  At the same time, a focus of this presentation is to inspire a new generation of leaders to dream about the art projects that they could lead.

The evening will begin at 7:15 pm with refreshments and an opportunity to connect with other liked minded attendees. Then Shary will lead the presentation  into a guided discussion, during which you can share your ideas about future collaborative art projects.  What do you envision for public art in the community?  How can you help support public art in the community?

The event is scheduled for 7:15 pm – 9:00 pm at John Oliver Secondary School, Room 209.

Spring Studio Sale – East Van Artist June Hunter May 1 & 2

East Van artist June Hunter, is having a Spring Studio Sale this coming weekend May 1st and 2nd. If you don’t know her work, June has a way with nature that shows in all her pieces. Her work has been featured in Style at Home House and Home and Where Vancouver as well as on CBC’s Living Vancouver.

At June’s Spring Studio Sale, you can expect to find sale prices on art, jewellery, tiles, magnets, one of a kind mixed media miniatures and a small number of the highly sought after crow and Vancouver medallions as well as charm bracelets. You can also expect to find new large prints on plexiglass in limited editions. June Hunter’s Studio is located at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale runs Friday, May 1st from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturday, May 2nd from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Cultch – Call To Artists For 2015/2016 Season

The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, has put out a call to visual artists to submit applications to exhibit their work during their 2015/2016 gallery season. Each exhibition will run for 4 to 5 weeks between August 2015 and July 2016. Submissions can be single or multiple artists’ proposals.

The Cultch has built a reputation over the past 40 years as one of Western Canada’s most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of the city and community’s social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and visual arts by established and emerging artists.

The Cultch Gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery as it also serves as the lobby for performances and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse nature of this space, submissions that include sculptures or free standing art will not be accepted.

Submission Criteria for Artists:

  1. An artist statement
  2. Artist bio(s)
  3. Resume/CV
  4. A complete list of images you are submitting, which should include title, size, medium. These images do not have to be the work you will be showing. They want to get a good overview of your work.
  5. You can submit up to 10 images. Image files should be in .jpeg format. File names must include the artist name, title of artwork and size of the work when framed: (example: Yuri Arajs – Sunny Day -18 in x 30 in. jpg)

Deadline for applications is Monday, May 15, 2015. It is preferred that you email your submissions to gallery@thecultch.com, but you can also mail a CD with your application to:

Stationary: A Recession-Era Musical At The Cultch April 21 – May 2

StationaryTheCultchThe Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, invites you to see Stationary: A Recession-Era Musical which begins on April 21st.  This is an indie-rock musical created by Delinquent Theatre about six young employees of a floundering advertising agency.   Under the fluorescent lights of real life, where obligations loom and social niceties loom large, they learn quickly where big dreams meet reality.  You can expect to be entertained with some rap, authentic indie rock and the cast will tackle post-recession existence with ukulele in hand.  Playwright, actor and Artistic Producer, Christine Quintana says “Stationary isn’t just a think-piece about hopeless millennials, it asks the question – what happens now?”  Very good question, we are looking forward to seeing the answer.  Stationary: A Recession-Era Musical previews on April 21st with opening night on April 22nd. Ideas Gathering Event April 26 To Support Art In Renfrew-Collingwood

PlacesSpacesFacesThe Renfrew-Collingwood area is looking to generate ideas to develop a plan for art and cultural spaces  within its community.  They are looking for support for new studios, galleries and rehearsal and performance spaces within the area. If you are an artist, resident, community organization or stakeholder interested in supporting arts, you are invited to an Ideas Gathering Event: Places Faces Spaces on April 26th at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House on Sunday, April 26th.  The event takes places from 1:30 – 6:30 pm and you are asked to RSVP online or by calling Collingwood Neighbourhood House at T: 604.435.0323. If you are a resident and artist and not able to attend the event, you can also participate by way of a survey to indicate what you’d like to see for art and culture in the area.

The Duchess At The Cultch April 7 – 18

Duchess_portrait-225x300Well before there was reality television or even television for that matter, there were real life characters that created drama in their wake such as The Duchess also known as Wallis Simpson.  She was the notorious convention-smashing American divorcee for whom Edward VIII gave up the throne for after their scandalous affair.  Six months after being abdicated from the thrown, Edward VIII married the Duchess. Although the monarch has never been short on drama, The Duchess was unlike any other before her or since. The play The Duchess also known as Wallis Simpson is by the late Linda Griffiths. It is an epic as well as true tale with the play being a long time in the making. The play features 10 local actors and takes you through the tumultuous adult life of The Duchess. Along the way you will meet some historical figures that crossed her path including Noel Coward, King George V, Hitler and Queen Mary.  The Duchess kicks off at The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, on April 7th with a preview, opening night takes place on April 8th and the show continues its run until April 18th.  Tickets are available online at The Cultch from $19.

Opening Reception For Love Your Face At Studio 126 April 2nd

LoveYourFaceWe’ve learnt of a very cool space in Chinatown, called Studio 126 located at 126 East Pender Street. The studio has a variety of locally made goods including reclaimed furniture, handmade items by local artisans including Brand & Iron, Woodlot, Hobo Woodworks,  Say It With Sarcasm, Sue Griese Ceramics, LISSU Linen and East Van Jam.

This Thursday, April 2nd, you are invited to the Opening Reception of Love Your Face. This is a collection of 100 portraits by photographer Ian Sheh in which he reveals the wonder and beauty of our face. The reception kicks off at 7:00 pm and runs till 10:00 pm.  Admission is free. If you wish to RSVP or request further information email Studio 126 at studio126yvr@gmail.com.  If you miss the Opening Reception, the Love Your Face exhibit will run until May 3rd and can be viewed Wednesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

Proud Returns To Firehall Arts Centre April 7 – 25

ProudFirehallArtsCentreProud makes a return to the Firehall Arts Centre on April 7th.  If you missed it last year, you missed one wickedly entertaining show. Proud is a play written by Michael Healey about the Right Honourable Stephen Harper. The Prime Minister is played by Andrew Wheeler who provides an amazing performance of the man himself. It really is quite something to see. But the rest of the cast shines as well including his Chief of Staff and his new sassy MP Jisbella Lyth played by Emmelia Gordon. You will be drawn in from the very first line. The show is hilarious, sexy and witty. No matter what your politics, there is something to entertain everyone here.  Proud starts at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street, on April 7th and runs till April 25th.  Tickets start at $22.

Obaaberima At The Cultch March 24 – April 4

ObaaberimaCultchThe Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, invites you to see Obaaberima which begins on March 24th. The play chronicles the tale of a young African-Canadian’s journey across continents, genders, races and sexualities. Obaaberima is a derogatory term meaning girly boy. The play will explore an important and often unheard perspective on the queer experience in Canada, that being first-generation queer immigrants. This is expected to be a powerhouse performance that blends theatre, spoken word, music and dance. Ghanaian-Canadian Tawiah M’carthy will give voice to people caught between their homeland and their new home. Obaaberima begins on March 24th and runs till April 4th . East FEAST Call To Artists: Micro Funding Event Supporting Local Artists

East FEAST  (Funding Emerging Artists through Sustainable Tactics) is a micro-funding event that supports artists living and working in the neighbourhoods of Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona. East FEAST relies on community engagement to be successful.

East FEAST hosts a community meal that raises funds through ticket sales to the event which in turn directly funds an artist or artist group. Community members will be invited to participate by attending a meal in support of local artists. The FEAST is scheduled for June 28, 2015  2-4 pm.  Those who attend will enjoy food specifically created and prepared for the event by a local chef/caterer as well as entertainment. You will also have the opportunity to meet and listen to 3 artists each of whom will make a 5-7 minute presentation during the event.  At the end of the FEAST, attendees will vote on which artist they would like to see funded.  The chosen artist will receive a grant from the funds raised by the event ticket sales of up to $1000.

What they are looking for now is local artists to apply to participate in East FEAST.  Applicants must work or live in Grandview-Woodlands or Strathcona community. Also, proposed projects must take place in Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona neighbourhoods.  One artist will receive funding of $1,000 and honorariums of $100 will be presented to the two semi-finalists.
