East FEAST Call To Artists: Micro Funding Event Supporting Local Artists

27 Feb

EastFEAST

East FEAST  (Funding Emerging Artists through Sustainable Tactics) is a micro-funding event that supports artists living and working in the neighbourhoods of Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona. East FEAST relies on community engagement to be successful.

East FEAST hosts a community meal that raises funds through ticket sales to the event which in turn directly funds an artist or artist group. Community members will be invited to participate by attending a meal in support of local artists. The FEAST is scheduled for June 28, 2015  2-4 pm.  Those who attend will enjoy food specifically created and prepared for the event by a local chef/caterer as well as entertainment. You will also have the opportunity to meet and listen to 3 artists each of whom will make a 5-7 minute presentation during the event.  At the end of the FEAST, attendees will vote on which artist they would like to see funded.  The chosen artist will receive a grant from the funds raised by the event ticket sales of up to $1000.

What they are looking for now is local artists to apply to participate in East FEAST.  Applicants must work or live in Grandview-Woodlands or Strathcona community. Also, proposed projects must take place in Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona neighbourhoods.  One artist will receive funding of $1,000 and honorariums of $100 will be presented to the two semi-finalists. Are you a local artist with a great idea for a project in the specified areas?  Why not apply for a grant.  To learn more about the specific requirements for artists, visit East FEAST or email questions to eastfeastvancouver@gmail.com. Submissions will be accepted to April 30, 2015.

Rescue Me: Hyde Is A Siamese Cross & Kitty Comedian Looking For His Forever Home

14 Feb

HydeSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to Hyde.  Hyde is a young adult Siamese Cross that is a  bundle of energy and lots of fun.  The Vancouver SPCA is seeking an active guardian for this cool cat. Hyde was found in someone’s backyard shed where he had been taking up residence for a week or so. He is a very exuberant young cat and needs plenty of stimulation and activity to keep him feeling entertained. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA think he will bore easily so his new home should be spacious and his owners should be home often. This boy loves to play and is quite fine with being the life of the party. Note Hyde does crave outdoor access and his friends at the Vancouver SPCA have been working on harness training with him and he is loving it! In typical Siamese fashion Hyde is bold, chatty, hilarious, and cuddly. This boy has loads of purrsonality and would make a great kitty comedian.  We are thinking possible YouTube star material here!  If you think you could give this boy a forever home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. Stop by for a visit anytime. If you would like more information about Hyde, contact the Vancouver SPCA. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.

While we have your attention, the BC SPCA has this month kicked off their Million Acts of Kindness Campaign in which they encourage kind acts towards all animals. Their aim is reach their goal of 1,000,000 acts of kindness in one year’s time. The idea is that each time you carry out one of their featured acts or post one of your own, you are making your community a safer and more humane place for animals. One of their suggested actions, is simply sharing  information about a pet waiting for adoption.  So we invite to participate in the Million Acts of Kindness Campaign and share Hyde’s story so he can find his forever home.

UPDATED March 5, 2015 – Hyde has found his forever home.

Say Hi To A Stranger: Second Edition February 13 – 15

9 Feb

SayHiToStranger2015We are pleased to see the return of the “Say Hi To A Stranger” Campaign which was initiated by A Cue Creative Consulting.  The first Say Hi To A Stranger Weekend occurred on November 8 – 10, 2013 after local writer Chelsea Pescitelli identified Vancouver as “anti-social” in her VancityBuzz article “Single in Vancouver: The Asocial Single Society.”  A Cue Creative Consulting responded with a video and blog post that spread online. They dared Vancouverites to say “Hi!” to strangers and tweet about their experience with the hashtag #sayhitoastranger. The Cue Creative team discovered that Vancouver could be a social and open city, but needed a push to open up and start communicating. Along with the team being featured in mainstream media, approximately 200 people gathered at the checkpoints over the weekend, and more than 5,000 people engaged with the blog and on social media online. #sayhitoastranger trended on Twitter on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

We at IliveInEastVan.com were one of the many that participated in this initial campaign as we love the premise of encouraging social interaction on the streets of Vancouver. Although some of the social interaction was via social media, what is being encouraging is face to face interaction saying hello and smiling to people on the street.  This year, the Say Hi To A Stranger Campaigns is being held February 13 – 15 to coincide with Valentine’s Day. According to Psychology Today, Valentine’s Day can add to the feelings of sadness and anxiety felt by adults who are single. Kaare Long, CEO of A Cue Creative Consulting and Project Manager for the campaign says “Vancouver is accused of being a cold city for meeting people, especially for singles looking for ‘love.’ Let’s change that perception. It’s not just a singles’ issue. If everybody gets on board, things will change, even if it’s just for one weekend. We want to encourage the dialogue — as long as there is dialogue, there is potential for change. We’re putting you to the challenge, Vancouver. Let’s warm this city up and make some connections!”

We’ve all heard the research about how important social connections are to our well being.  By social connections, we do not mean social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc), but face to face interactions.  Having said this, if social media interactions, bring you face to face, go for it!  But this weekend, it is about saying hi to a stranger face to face.  Even if you only receive a smile, scientific research supports that a smile alone will put you in a better mood states Dr. Michael Lewis, psychologist at Cardiff University. Who doesn’t want to be in a better mood? How great that you could so easily put someone else in a better mood.

During the ucpoming weekend, Vancouver businesses will create socially interactive environments and encourage residents to use the hashtag #sayhitoastranger on social media or use the code phrase “say hi to a stranger” in person in exchange for free food, drinks, gifts or other promotions. If you wish to participate in this weekend’s campaign, why not visit some local businesses participating in East Vancouver which include Bird On A Wire, 2535 Main Street, Mystic Masala, 1723 Grant Street, Home on the Range Organics, 235 East Broadway, Y’s Books, 4307 Main Street and Second Nature at 1827 Victoria Diversion.  Will you say hi to a stranger this weekend?

Rescue Me: Decost Is The Cat’s Meow And Is Looking For His Forever Home

1 Feb

DecostSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a sweet boy named Decost.  He is a 9 year old short hair cat that has personality plus.  Decost has been hanging out at the Vancouver SPCA for 60 days now. This boy was a stray for about a year prior to that so really needs a home to call his own.  Speaking of home, you will know you are at home with this boy around.  His meow is a raspy sounding thing which will be sure to keep you entertained.   Decost loves his treats and is responding to clicker training. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA say he will be shaking a paw soon.   Decost is best-suited to a cat-saavy adult home.  He is accustomed to indoor/outdoor living, so a good fit would be with someone that is willing to safely introduce him to supervised outdoor outings. Although the shelter is better than being a stray, Decost is a tad bored at the shelter and would really like his forever home. Could it be yours? If so, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. Stop by for a visit anytime. If you would like more information about Decost, the Vancouver SPCA would love to hear from you. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we thank you in advance for sharing this information to help find Decost his forever home.

UPDATED February 10, 2015: We are pleased to report Decost has found his forever home.

New In Town: Bâtard Boulangerie & Cafe Moderne Comes To The Fraserhood

30 Jan

Batard2We would like to introduce you to the newly opened Bâtard Boulangerie & Cafe Moderne located at 3958 Fraser Street.  This is a French style bakery brought to you by  Chris Brown of Rise Artisan Bakery and Bruno and Sally Born restaurateurs and owners of Finest at Sea.  This is a great addition to the Fraserhood. Outside of the amazing French style sweets and excellent coffees, there is the bread. Big levain loaves and dense rye breads that you can purchase by the 100 grams instead of a large loaf.  They also carry a great selection of Farm House Cheeses and a selection of French cheeses from Les Amis de Fromage and charcuterie from Oyama Sausages.  You can also expect to find Chris Brown’s award winning artisanal marmalades “The Bitter End”.  These are truly heavenly marmalades.

Bâtard Boulangerie is perfectly situated on Fraser Street next door to Graze Restaurant which is next to Earnest Ice Cream between 23rd and 24th Avenue.  Now, does that not make for a delicious block we ask?  The 100 year old space they renovated is beautiful, cozy and makes for a great meeting spot. And as of June 2015, Bâtard Boulangerie is now open 7 days a week from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Batard3
